Romesh Ranganathan's son's school place appeal turned down

Romesh Ranganathan's son's school place appeal turned down

BBC News23-06-2025
The comedian and TV presenter Romesh Ranganathan has said his appeal to get his youngest son into one of his preferred choices of secondary schools has been turned down. Mr Ranganathan said he had "accepted the decision" but commented that "the system wasn't working".Speaking in a video on Instagram the TV personality said "lots of people in the same situation" had contacted him and that the situation was "particularly bad for people with special needs and disabilities".A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council (WSCC) said: "We understand the disappointment of parents who are not offered a place at a school of their preferences."
Mr Ranganathan commented that there was "no easy solution to the situation" and said his family would have to "go with an alternative". In April the comedian said he had emailed West Sussex County Council six times after his son had been placed in a school "on the other side of town", and not at the same school as his elder two brothers. He said at the time he had received no response and his local MP, who agreed to investigate, had been told the council "can't do anything about it".A WSCC statement said: "We do all we can to provide young people with school places and this year we were able to offer 87% of the 9,050 secondary school applicants a place at their first choice of school, while nearly 97% were offered a place at one of their three preferences."Applications are considered by our admissions team on their priority according to the relevant oversubscription criteria for their preferred schools, which may include proximity of the school to home and whether other siblings attend the same school."

Football Manager 26 gets a reveal trailer – here's everything to know so far

Football Manager 26 has finally been teased by Sports Interactive after months of silence. The game returns after a shock hiatus, as Football Manager 25 was cancelled by the developer in February earlier this year due to development delays. However, the studio has since shared a 30-second video revealing the new game. – With commentary from Peter Drury, it offered a very first glimpse at the brand new in-game engine, now powered by Unity. On top of that, we got a look at the official Premier League license, included for the very first time in the series. That means all the official PL teams, players, kits and more will be available in the upcoming game. The video finishes with a message saying "guess who's back" along with a first look at the Football Manager 26 logo. A match day first look is coming soon, but for now, here's a look at everything we know so far about Football Manager 26. Football Manager 26 trailer The trailer has very little detail, but you can watch the first exciting glimpses of Premier League action below. Back. Better. Building for the season ahead. #FM26 Match Day First Look. Coming soon. — Football Manager (@FootballManager) August 13, 2025 What's new in Football Manager 26? For the uninitiated, the game - unsurprisingly - lets you become a football manager, taking minnows from the depths of the footballing pyramid to the Premier League and beyond. Details are thin on the ground, but Football Manager 26 will have all of the updated teams from the 2025/26 season in the leagues it covers around the world. The Premier League license is included in the game for the first time, meaning that all 20 of the official teams will be represented, including kits, logos, player photos and more. The game engine is moving to Unity, and delays in this move are why Football Manager 25 was cancelled back in February. The new match engine seems to offer the game's best-ever graphics. As in previous years, it's likely that Sports Interactive will add a handful of new teams, but this has not yet been confirmed. Can I pre-order Football Manager 26? Football Manager 26 is not yet available to pre-order. Availability usually coincides with the annoucment of a release date. Which platforms can I play Football Manager 26 on? Previous Football Manager titles have been playable across PC, Mac, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and mobile. The full, traditional game is usually available on PC and Mac. A console-optimised version is usually available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with Touch usually releasing on Nintendo Switch consoles, tablets and mobile. There's also a dedicated mobile game that requires a Netflix subscription to play. Details about Football Manager 26 Console, Touch and Mobile are not yet known. The release date for Football Manager 26 is currently unknown, but usually, the games release in October or November, with Football Manager 2024, the last entry, releasing in November 2023. Football Manager 2024 Can't wait that long? If you want to get up to speed before Football Manager 26 comes out, or just to check out a brilliant football sim, Football Manager 2024 included a whole range of new features at the time that will likely be present in Football Manager 26, including Japanese leagues, player development tweaks, set-piece coaches and plenty more.

Clara Amfo says depression played a part in Radio 1 exit

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo has spoken about how depression played a part in her decision to leave the station last has previously spoken about her periods of struggling with her mental health and anxiety, and told Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast last week she has "dealt with deep, deep, deep depression in my life".She told her former Radio 1 colleague she decided to leave the station partly because she felt "completely satiated" by the job and didn't want it to become "a chore".But she went on to say she was suffering from depression in 2023 and took a break "to have a little reset", before deciding to leave for good. Amfo joined Radio 1 in 2015 and took over Cotton's mid-morning slot the same year, before moving to Annie Mac's evening show in 2021. Amfo left the station in March 2024. Burnt out She told Cotton her depression had become particularly bad at the start of 2023."Mate, I was in the flipping trenches," she said. "I think I was burnt out, I wasn't taking care of myself properly, I think I was a bit sort of overwhelmed by life's weird - not weird, valid - injustices."I just wasn't feeling great and I was in a bit of a negative headspace, and yeah I was really, really depressed mid-2023, and I took some time off of radio, and just had to have a little reset. And that's when I decided I was going to leave my show, actually, at the time."Cotton, who has previously said she left Radio 1 because the job was "ruining her mind", told Amfo she had also experienced "very, very low mental health in periods".Amfo also spoke about other factors behind her departure from Radio 1 earlier in the interview, saying she was determined not "to resent anything that that I do" in her job."I don't ever want anything to feel like it's being forced or like it's a chore. And I wasn't feeling that way, but I want to be able to listen to music as a fan always, rather than as a business," she explained."I want to be able to talk to people on a human level, rather than thinking, I've got to get that viral interview clip."She quoted a comment that Annie Mac told her when she left. "She was just like, 'Yeah babe, I'm just ready to do my next thing'."And I think that's how I felt. I felt so completely satiated by it and I was like, well, I think there's nothing new for me to do. I could carry on and do it. I could. But I think one thing I learned is just because you can do something doesn't mean you always should."

Taylor Swift reveals how Travis Kelce's shock Eras Tour appearance really came to be

Taylor Swift has lifted the lid on how Travis Kelce really found himself on the stage at Wembley Stadium in the middle of her Eras Tour show last year. The Kansas City Chiefs star stunned English fans back in June 2024 when he appeared on stage wearing a tuxedo and top hat, carrying his girlfriend to a red couch and even pretending to apply makeup to her face. Until now, the full story of how the viral moment came to be has not been shared, but the loved-up pair revealed all on their special episode of New Heights on Wednesday night. 'It was so good, it was so special,' Swift explained about the on-stage bombshell. 'We both thought we were just joking. A lot of what we say is inside a bit, and we're laughing... it was like, "are you serious?" I could be... I could be serious, are you serious?' Travis then replied, 'I was serious, in terrifying fashion,' before Taylor added: 'It was a "wouldn't it be funny if..." kind of thing.' Kelce admits his sole aim was to 'try not to f*** this up', insisting to his girlfriend: 'The show's perfect, you don't want to f*** this up, do you Tay?' She explained: 'If you wanted to do it, I was never going to pressure you to do it... but when we were talking about it, I could see the twinkle in your eye. You got up there, and you were so good. Every single beat, his comedic timing is crazy. He slows down time.' 'I just black out!' Travis then joked, noting: 'I rose from that stage and I saw how many people are looking at you.' In response, Taylor insisted he 'looked so good' and even claimed it was the 'loudest scream I ever heard on the tour.' Detailing more on how he felt in front of the 90,000-strong Wembley Stadium crowd, the NFL tight end said: 'I felt like the smallest piece of life ever. Oh my gosh, what is going on. I have to pick her up now... just don't drop her.' Taylor then responded: 'You were actually scared about that? You could literally throw me over a mountain, and then climb the mountain and catch me on the other side! 'It was so good, it was London, it was Wembley Stadium, those were such special times.' On the podcast appearance, which had 1.3million people watching live and eventually crashed before its intended finish, Swift opened up on various elements of her life and announced more details on her new album. Swift also joked that Travis used New Heights as a dating app when he publicly revealed how he had tried and failed to give Swift his phone number after watching her perform at Arrowhead Stadium back in 2023. His confession eventually sparked the start of their relationship. 'This podcast had done a lot for me. This podcast got me a boyfriend,' Swift said. 'It was wild, but it worked. He is the good kind of crazy. The first time we talked, he was truly getting to know me. He is just a vibe booster in everyone's life that he's in. He's like an exclamation point.' The pop sensation is now a regular at Kansas City Chiefs games but Swift revealed how little she knew about football before meeting Kelce. 'I'm not ready to be analyst right now but give me 16 months,' she joked, adding that she is now 'obsessed' with the NFL. 'I didn't know what a first down was, I didn't know what the chains were, I didn't know what a tight end (Kelce's position) was.' She explained to Travis' older brother, Jason: 'On our first date, I legitimately asked him what it was like when the Chiefs played the Eagles in the Super Bowl (in February 2023) and he looked across the field, across the line of scrimmage, and saw his brother standing 5ft in front of him on the field... I now know what an insane question that was. 'He was like: "Actually I'm on the offense and my brother is the offense and I'm only on the field at the same time as the defense." I thought everyone was out there at the same time.'
