EXCLUSIVE Why Britney Spears really made a wild adoption announcement amid fears over her reunion with son Jayden
So, it is no surprise Britney Spears ' latest social media post sparked confusion.
The troubled singer, 43, who is mom to sons Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden, 18, with Kevin Federline, told followers she had 'adopted a beautiful baby girl' named Lennon London Spears.
Baffled fans questioned how she could have been cleared by authorities, while others suggested she had purchased another doll or even a dog.
Now, one insider has told Daily Mail she was simply 'trying to be funny' and garner a reaction.
'Britney was just having fun when she announced that she would be adopting a girl,' our source confirmed. 'She did it for a laugh, she isn't adopting a daughter, and it also doesn't mean anything else like her getting a dog. She was just trying to be funny and see who would bite.'
Spears, who is known to jest on her social media, told her followers: 'I want to let you guys know I adopted a beautiful baby girl!!! Her name is Lennon London Spears.'
It was followed by a series of winks and silly-faced emojis as well as the news that she had allegedly 'decided to move to Italy.'
The since deleted post came days after fans spotted a baby carrier in the background of one of her recent dance videos.
'She's obviously taking about a new doll or dog and not an actual human being,' one fan wrote, while another said she was 'trolling.'
In January she announced she was planning on expanding her family through adoption.
'I've decided I'm going to adopt a baby girl !!!! I'm actually serious !!!' she said in a since deleted post.
The singer, who has been working on healing her relationship with her youngest son Jayden, is somewhat obsessed with babies and lifelike dolls.
In April, a member of her entourage was pictured carrying a doll, wrapped in a pink blanket, as they landed in Mexico for her vacation.
The singer, 43, released a statement announcing her shocking news, which also saw her claim she was relocating to Italy
It came one month after she posted a picture of a baby's hand and wrote: 'The baby reminds me to get my nails done !!! How unbelievably adorable.'
Another post from December showed a baby wearing jewellery. She wrote: 'OMG OMG OMG unbelievable wow.' She also shared a picture of a baby holding up a middle finger while drinking from a bottle.
She has flaunted her doll collection before, dancing with one in a post from October 2021 in which she introduced fans to Brennan.
'Her nursery is beautiful and her name is Brennan … we even look alike!!! My first [girl emoji]!!! I'm turning 40 this year … age is nothing but a number but seriously … growing up is the dumbest thing you'll ever do so PLAY ON MY FRIENDS !!!!'
Spears has been largely estranged from her sons who moved to Hawaii with their dad Federline in 2023.
Following their divorce in 2007 – and a highly-publicized mental breakdown that led to Spears being placed under a 13-year conservatorship by her father Jamie Spears – Federline was granted sole custody of the two boys in 2008.
Over 17 years, she paid more than an estimated $5 million in child support, but those monthly payments came to an end last September when Jayden turned 18.
Two months later, it was reported that Jayden was 'back in California' where Spears lives, though it was unclear if he was staying at her $7.4 million estate in Thousand Oaks.
Last month, photos exclusively obtained by the Daily Mail showed Jayden and his mom driving around Los Angeles in the $200,000 silver Mercedes SL 63 AMG+ whip she gifted him.
At the time, a source claimed to the Daily Mail that Spears' team was 'worried about her relationship with Jayden.
'Jayden is her rock right now and if there was ever anything that broke this bond Britney would be crushed,' they said. 'He is all she talks about. She is helping his career and providing for him financially. He is living large now.'
Her latest adoption post follows a series of mishap admissions. She recently revealed she almost hit her house with a new car she just bought. She also claimed to have burned her bathroom down and 'ran like a maniac back to the house because there was a pie in the oven'.
Months prior she told fans she was left with a facial burn after her fire 'blew up in my face.'

Meghan Markle has awkward Kardashians moment as she gifts As Ever merch to stars... who fail to acknowledge her
Meghan Markle had an awkward moment with the Kardashian family as she celebrated the famed family using her As Ever merchandise. Khloe Kardashian, 41, shared snaps from sister Kylie Jenner 's 28th birthday party over the weekend, which included a deluxe hamper from the former working Royal's luxury brand. The hamper included bottles of wine, preserves and an array of vegetables - with Kardashian seemingly forgetting to tag Meghan in the post. Meghan delightedly reposted the snap writing 'Hey hey, all my girls with a K' but fans called out the famed family's failure to acknowledge Meghan. One wrote: 'When you send something over cuz you have to miss the party, except Meghan was never invited to the party. Another quipped: 'The pr team did everything on both sides. These ladies don't do s**t.' Others wrote: 'What were the Kardashians going to do with this catastrophe? 'My girls with a K? Is she 9? The Kardashians would probably hate it. 'And yet, Khloe doesn't even follow meghan's personal or as ever Instagram accounts…. But Khloe does follow Martha Stewart. 'Kardashian followers won't give that basket a second thought - it looks like a gift from a grandma - MM doesn't even know who her own customer is, or what they are interested in - I doubt she knows what Khloe's followers are interested in either. 'In my opinion, it's a paid advertising. Nothing is an accident with Kardasians. Khloe was within Markle's budget. It's quite telling Khloe doesn't follow Markle or As ever. 'I just watched a video where Kris said they post no products unless they are getting paid for it. The pay is over six figures per post. So for this is happen on a birthday Meg must have paid a fortune.' The Daily Mail has reached out to a Kardashians representative for comment and has yet to hear back. This comes days after Meghan shared sweet words of thanks to her husband Prince Harry on Tuesday when she marked her 44th birthday on Instagram. One wrote: 'When you send something over cuz you have to miss the party, except Meghan was never invited to the party' The actress, whose birthday was on Monday, shared a photo of herself with closed eyes as she blew out the candles on her birthday cake. 'Blowing out the candles on a beautiful 24 hours, and thanking my husband, friends and family for making it so special,' she captioned the celebratory post. 'To those of you I don't know, but who send love every day — thank you so much. Please know I feel it and appreciate it ❤️,' she added. The Duchess of Sussex shared the behind-the-scenes glimpse into her birthday celebrations after Pamela Anderson weighed in on claims that her cooking show With Love, Meghan bore eerie similarities to the Naked Gun star's series Cooking With Love. Meghan joked that she was going to 'get a little foodie on' her fans when she revealed that her party was held at the acclaimed restaurant Funke in Beverly Hills, which has became a popular spot for stars including Kim Kardashian, Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez and Matt Damon, among many others.
