Officials said the Metro Nashville Police Department and the Nashville Fire Department initially responded to the scene because the original call came to MNPD. Then, after the incident was determined to be on the Rutherford County side of the line, the sheriff's office and the La Vergne Police Department responded to the scene with Rutherford County Emergency Services while Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Department of Transportation closed the highway during the investigation.
All lanes were blocked at approximately 8:30 a.m., so traffic was diverted at Waldron Road in La Vergne for nearly five hours.
The roadway reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

Police identify 17-year-old as suspect in killing of 26-year-old woman in downtown Hamilton

Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a teenager suspected in the fatal shooting of Belinda Sarkodie in Hamilton's downtown core. In a news release on Sunday evening, Hamilton police said they're looking for Mackale Lavoie, 17. The warrant for his arrest was issued under a second-degree murder charge and two counts of attempted murder. Police said that at 5:25 p.m. ET on Friday, a "male suspect encountered a group" of three people near James Street North and King Street East who "appear to have been the intended targets." "The male suspect opened fire, striking one of the individuals. As he continued to shoot at a second person, an innocent bystander — [Sarkodie] — was fatally struck," the news release said. Sarkodie, 26, was pronounced dead on the scene. A man was also struck by the gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. On Saturday, police said Sarkodie was originally from Ghana, had immigrated to Canada in 2024 and was an innocent bystander who was out with a friend when she was killed. Police said they obtained an order permitting the publication of Lavoie's identity. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, a judge can grant an exemption to release the identity of a person under 18 if "there is reason to believe that the young person is a danger to others" or the "publication of the information is necessary to assist in apprehending the young person." Police urged the public to not approach Lavoie and to contact them immediately at 905-546-4925 or call 911 if anyone sees him.

Trump Curses as White House Faith Office Lunch Takes Bizarre Turn

Things got a bit awkward during the White House Faith Office luncheon on Monday. Not only did President Donald Trump curse in front of faith leaders—calling Biden-era indictments against him 'bulls--t'—he raged that he he had been investigated more than the gangster Al Capone, bragged he has 'always made money,' and incorrectly claimed gas prices are the lowest they have been in 50 years. Those topics did not appear to be part of Trump's prepared remarks. As he addressed assembled religious business leaders from the podium, he looked down occasionally at his speech but went off on tangents as he worked his way through the text. 'I've ended the radical left war on faith, and we're once again protecting religious freedom instead of destroying it, and God is once again welcomed back into our public square,' Trump said, clearly part of his prepared remarks. Trump, 79, compared himself to Capone moments later. He characterized the notorious gangster, believed to have murdered over 200 people, as 'great.' 'I was under investigation more than the late, great, Alphonse Capone,' Trump said. 'Think of it. Al Capone would kill people for dinner. If he left the room and he didn't like him, he'd have him shot, killed, buried under a building someplace, as part of the foundation of a building. They're all over the place, and I said I had more time under investigation than the legendary Alphonse Capone, or probably anybody else.' Trump then misremembered that he had been indicted four times in 2023, not five. 'The one thing I did that was very helpful, I was indicted five times. Indicted, that wasn't a word that was in—my father's looking down, my mother's looking down, that my son's not supposed to be indicted,' he said. 'I think I got indicted five times, impeached two times. All bulls--t, right? Terrible stuff.' The luncheon crowd, comprising 60 CEOs and business leaders who donate to faith-aligned charities, did not appear to mind the president's meandering, as they clapped and cheered throughout his speech as he rambled. 'Gas prices have reached the lowest level in five decades,' Trump remarked at one point. 'Actually, it's going to be, we're going to see some really good numbers where, you know, drill, baby drill, drill, baby drill. I've got to make sure that people can afford to produce the gas. ... 'But the gas has gotten to the lowest level in decades, and you're seeing $1.99 $1.98. I saw $1.95 at certain states, not California, because every time it goes down, they add taxes onto it,' Trump rambled. 'All they do is they keep adding taxes. Terrible governor, doesn't know what he's doing. He may be, he may be a candidate, but if you, if you go by success, you can't have him be a candidate.' Fox News reported that the White House luncheon is the 'first event of its kind.' The White House Faith Office was created by executive order in February. Trump grew up in a Reformed Church but rarely attends services as an adult. He has made a habit of name-dropping God since entering politics a decade ago, and he won the presidency in 2016 off the backs of Evangelical voters who later became his MAGA base.

Dramatic video shows man shooting at attackers following Bronx dispute

A man embroiled in a dispute and attacked by two other men pulled out a gun and wildly opened fire at the pair in a bloody confrontation Monday in the Bronx, police said. In a stunning video obtained by the Daily News, two men are seen grabbing and kicking a third male around 12:59 p.m. near Commonwealth and Westchester Aves. in Soundview. The jaw-dropping video shows that during the confrontation, the gunman — dressed in a hoodie — is held in a rear waist lock by his attacker while another man man appears to be filming the assault on a cell phone. The gunman then suddenly pulls out a gun and fires a shot over his shoulder, striking one of the assailants, and runs off before firing yet another shot at the other attacker. According to cops, a 27-year-old man was unresponsive and unconscious with a gunshot wound to the torso when police responded. EMS rushed the man to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, police said. One horrified witness told The News she overheard the men talking during their argument. 'At first I thought they were robbing him,' the witness told The News. 'One of the guys were saying 'give me my money, give me my money' like he owed them. They were kicking him and he was saying 'I don't have no money'.' 'He pulled a gun out of nowhere and pow pow pow — the guy in the orange went down,' the witness continued, asking, 'See that blood right there? This is his.' There have been no arrests, police said. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
