'All because of one family ... ': Jaishankar slams Congress over Emergency; takes ‘Kissa Kursi Ka' jibe

NEW DELHI: "The one lesson that Emergency taught us is to never take freedom for granted," external affairs minister S
Jaishankar
declared on Friday while criticising the Congress party for its imposition in 1975.
Addressing a Mock Parliament event organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) to commemorate its 50th anniversary, Jaishankar referenced the movie "Kissa Kursi Ka" highlighting how one family's interests were placed above the nation's.
"When a family is considered above the nation, things like Emergency take place," he said, adding that the move was essentially aimed at breaking the country's morale.
"This entire exercise, in a way, was to break the morale of the country and the society... Many people, who were not even in politics, were impacted. Those who were in politics were well aware that doing politics meant an inevitable arrest, and those who were arrested were unaware if and when they would be released," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
had also condemned the Congress party's actions, describing the Emergency as the "darkest chapter" in India's democratic history.

He highlighted how the Constitution was violated, Parliament's voice was suppressed, and attempts were made to control the courts. "The poor, marginalized and downtrodden were particularly targeted, including their dignity insulted," PM Modi stated.
The Emergency, imposed between June 25, 1975, and March 21, 1977, was India's first peacetime Emergency declaration under Article 352 of the Constitution. President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the proclamation citing threats from internal disturbance, marking the third Emergency in India's history after the ones during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971).

Jaishankar says SCO statement without terrorism reference unacceptable to India
Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday (June 27, 2025) said India wanted a reference to terrorism in the outcome document of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meeting, but it was not acceptable to one member country, an oblique reference to Pakistan. Mr. Jaishankar said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's view on the matter was right since the main purpose of SCO was to fight terrorism and without a reference to India's concerns, he would not accept the outcome document. Mr. Singh on Thursday refused to sign a joint communique of the SCO following the omission of the Pahalgam terror attack and not explicitly addressing India's concerns over Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism. At a conference of SCO Defence Ministers' conclave, Mr. Singh demanded inclusion of the terror attack in the communique, while the Pakistani side pressed for having a paragraph on militant activities in Balochistan in an apparent attempt to blame New Delhi, top sources said. The objective of SCO that runs through consensus was to fight terrorism, Mr. Jaishankar said in a press conference when asked about Mr. Singh's stand. "In the discussion on outcome document of the Defence Ministers' meeting, one country — you can guess which one — said 'no we don't want reference to that'," he said. The SCO runs by unanimity, Mr. Jaishankar said, but when one country said it will not accept any mention of terrorism, Mr. Singh communicated that the outcome document was not acceptable to India.

Former Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Reddy gets court relief in convoy death case
VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh high court on Friday granted interim protection to former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and others, directing the police not to take coercive steps, including arrest, in relation to the case registered over the death of one Ch Singaiah. The high court asked the Advocate General to explain how the passengers in the vehicle are responsible for an untoward incident that resulted in the death of a person. Guntur police registered a case against Jagan Mohan Reddy, his PA K Naheswara Reddy, former ministers Vidadala Rajini and Perni Venkatramaiah, and former TTD Chairman Y V Subba Reddy, charging them with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 105 of BNS, after videos surfaced suggesting Singaiah was mowed down by the vehicle in which they were travelling. Jagan Mohan Reddy and others moved the high court seeking to quash the case registered against them. Arguing on behalf of the petitioners, senior counsels Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy and S Sriram submitted that the police initially declared that another vehicle was responsible for the incident in question and registered a case under section 106 of BNS for rash and negligent driving. However, the case was later altered to section 105, and the former CM and others, who were passengers in the vehicle, were included as accused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hotel con entradas incluidas PortAventura World Compra ahora Undo They submitted that the case is politically motivated, and the sections included in the FIR against the petitioners do not stand for judicial scrutiny. Considering the submissions of the petitioners, Justice K Srinivas Reddy asked Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas to explain how the passengers in the vehicle involved in an accident could be made accused. Responding to the query from the bench, Srinivas said that the incident in question cannot be seen as any other incident of rash and negligent driving. The Advocate General said that there was sufficient material to suggest that the petitioners, despite having knowledge of the incident, did not inform the police or take remedial measures to rescue the victim. Instead, they tried to cover up by giving the impression that some other vehicle was involved in the incident. Srinivas further said that the authorities had given limited permission for three vehicles and 100 persons to visit Rentapalla, but hundreds of vehicles and thousands of people gathered and conducted a rally in utter disregard of the law enforcement agencies. Even after the incident took place, the petitioners did not bother to call for an ambulance or inform the police but continued with the rally, he said. Srinivas said that all these things are to be seen together, not in isolation. If it had been a politically motivated case, as alleged by the petitioners, the police would have registered cases into three other deaths that occurred on that day due to the rally. The reason for the registration of the case in question was based on available material, he said, adding that the investigation is still at a nascent stage and sought time till Tuesday so that he can submit all details pertaining to the case. Considering the submissions on both sides, Justice Srinivas Reddy posted the matter for further hearing on July 1 and directed the police not to take coercive steps till then.

No rifts in Karnataka Congress, Rajanna's comments overblown: CM Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday dismissed speculation about political instability in the state, brushing aside recent remarks made by Minister KN Rajanna as inconsequential. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, the CM asserted that there is no internal discord within the Congress and advised the media and public to not read too much into Rajanna's comments. 'Minister KN Rajanna merely stated that there may be some political developments. He did not say that anything is going to happen. It's best not to give such statements undue attention.' Rajanna's vague remarks earlier in the week had sparked chatter about possible changes within the state's political landscape, but Siddaramaiah's firm response was aimed at putting those rumours to rest. The CM's clarification came shortly after he participated in the 516th birth anniversary celebrations of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah paid floral tributes to Kempegowda by garlanding his statue near the eastern entrance of the Vidhana Soudha. Speaking at the event, Siddaramaiah described Kempegowda as a visionary leader and an exceptional administrator whose foresight laid the foundation for what Bengaluru is today, a globally recognised tech and innovation hub. 'He was not only a founder, but also a far-sighted planner.' The birth anniversary celebrations were jointly organised by the Karnataka government, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and the Kempegowda Development Authority. The Chief Minister also recalled that it was during his earlier tenure (2013–2018) that his government, in consultation with Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, had officially identified Kempegowda's date of birth. Since then, the state has been commemorating Kempegowda Jayanti as an annual event. (With ANI inputs)
