Falcons miss out on Pro Bowl cornerback in PFF's 2013 NFL redraft

USA Today6 hours ago

Pro Football Focus' 2013 NFL redraft has Falcons take different path in Round 1
Back in 2013, the Atlanta Falcons used their first- and second-round picks to add two key members to the secondary. The team drafted cornerback Desmond Trufant in the first round, then landed defensive back Robert Alford in Round 2.
While neither player is headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, both played key roles during the team's run to the Super Bowl. Trufant made his only Pro Bowl appearance with the Falcons in 2015, while Alford started 76 games during his six seasons in Atlanta.
What would have happened if the Falcons went in a different direction during the 2013 NFL draft? Pro Football Focus released a 2013 redraft that has Atlanta missing out on Trufant and taking offensive lineman Justin Pugh.
Pugh notched 70.0-plus PFF overall grades in each of his first four NFL seasons, all with the Giants. His career also included a three-year stretch in Arizona (2019 to 2021) during which he earned strong 70.0-plus PFF pass-blocking grades. -- PFF's Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman and Trevor Sikkema
The Falcons would likely have been okay with landing Pugh, even if the 11-year NFL veteran never made a Pro Bowl during his playing career. However, you could argue the team needed defensive help more than an offensive lineman at that time, and it's impossible to know whether or not the Falcons would have still made the Super Bowl with Pugh.
Trufant, who spent his first seven seasons in Atlanta, finished his career with 14 interceptions, 89 passes defended, seven fumbles recovered and six sacks.
The Falcons did not bring back Trufant following the 2019 season. He went on to sign with the Detroit Lions in 2020. After his lone season in Detroit, Trufant spent his final year in the NFL playing for the New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders.

RB James Conner can move up Arizona Cardinals' all-time list in 2025

Conner could move up to No. 2 in franchise history in rushing yards and set the record for rushing touchdowns in 2025. Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner begins his fifth season with the team in 2025. He already is among the best and most productive running backs in franchise history. Through four seasons with the Cardinals, he has 3,668 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns. He is fourth in franchise history in running yards and second in rushing touchdowns. He has had over 1,000 yards in the last two seasons. With another solid season, he will move up to second place in one category and No. 1 in another. Conner will pass Stump Mitchell for second place all-time with 981 rushing yards in 2025. Mitchell had 4,649 career rushing yards for the Cardinals from 1981-1989. Will Conner be able to reach No. 1? Ottis Anderson is the team's all-time leader with 7,999 career yards. He needs 4,332 more rushing yards. That seems like a tough ask. However, he can set the franchise record with touchdown runs. Conner has 37. Anderson holds the franchise high with 46. With 10 rushing scores, he will set the new record. He had eight, seven and seven in each of the last three seasons, but he had 15 in 2021, so he does have it in him. With the potential emergence of second-year running back Trey Benson, it could be more difficult for Conner to reach those milestones. Brandon Aiyuk Sends Clear Message to 49ers Amid Trade Rumors

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In back-to-back offseasons, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly tried to unload star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on another team. Last year, San Francisco nearly dealt the All-Pro wideout to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the deal was nixed at the last minute as Aiyuk agreed to sign a contract extension with the 49ers while general manager John Lynch was on the phone trying to close a deal with Steelers GM Omar Khan, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer. Aiyuk ultimately signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension to stay in San Francisco — a deal that started to look bad for the team once the 27-year-old tore his ACL just seven games into last season. Even after sending Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders earlier in the offseason, the 49ers were also reportedly still trying to unload Aiyuk's contract as well. ESPN reported that San Francisco was trying feverishly to find a taker for the Arizona State alum before his $22.85 million bonus kicked in on April 1. Paying out such a large chunk of cash likely ensures that Aiyuk will be a 49er in 2025. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers gestures during the game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on September 15, 2024 in Minneapolis, Aiyuk has had a relatively quiet offseason this year compared to last, he did take to YouTube to make it known how he felt about his name being on the trade block shortly after the season ended, while also sending a subtle message to the 49ers about trying to dump him again. "They was talking bout trading me while I was off percocets /muscle relaxers and peeing in a cup by my bed! Couldn't walk for 10 weeks ain't nobody trading for me 🤣💀," Aiyuk wrote on YouTube. Aiyuk is working back from one of the more devastating injuries of his career after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee back in October, which likely made the list of suitors for him back in March a short one. The Steelers, who traded for former Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf and sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in two bold offseason deals, were rumored to be interested in Aiyuk again, and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio even hinted the 49ers seemed willing to send him to Pittsburgh. "The 49ers would love to unload Brandon Aiyuk's contract on the Steelers," Florio said during an interview with 93.7 The Fan. After missing all of training camp last season while holding out for a new deal, Aiyuk looked rusty to start the season. The former 1,000-yard receiver had just one 100-yard outing last year, and he had five or more receptions just twice while scoring zero touchdowns. He finished the season with 25 catches and 374 yards in seven games. Given the severity of his injury, there's a chance Aiyuk will be just as rusty when he returns in 2025. Steelers' blockbuster Jonnu Smith trade seems inevitable after season-ending OTAs injury

Our hearts go out to Steelers TE Donald Parham Jr., who suffered a torn Achilles at OTAs on Tuesday. Parham, who spent four years with the Los Angeles Chargers before signing with Pittsburgh this offseason, was expected to push TE Darnell Washington for reps behind TE Pat Freiermuth. Advertisement As a result, the argument against Pittsburgh acquiring Dolphins Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith — who has been heavily linked to the Steelers over the past few days — is almost nonexistent, with the offense now in need of another reliable pass-catching tight end after Parham's heartbreaking injury. Freiermuth and Washington are extremely underrated pieces of the Steelers' offense — but depending on Miami's asking price, acquiring Smith would be the move to make. If the Steelers did trade for the Dolphins Pro Bowler, extending Smith would be the next order of business — which could complicate other financial decisions Pittsburgh has yet to make.
