Arab League's Zaki urges world to press Israel to withdraw from Lebanon
by Naharnet Newsdesk 21 August 2025, 13:06 Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki met Thursday in Lebanon with President Joseph Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri. Speaking after his talks with Aoun, Zaki said his visit is aimed at 'stressing the Arab League's support for the principle of extending the authority of the state and monopolizing weapons in its hand.' 'We join the Lebanese leadership in calling on the international community to press Israel to withdraw from all Lebanese territory and implement the ceasefire resolutions. We also emphasized that the U.S. mediation is ongoing in this regard and that the mediator must compel the Israeli side to implement the decisions,' Zaki added. 'No one wants Lebanon to descend into a situation in which it bears undesired consequences,' Zaki said, apparently referring to the domestic situation in the wake of the government's decision to disarm Hezbollah and all armed groups. The Arab League official also hoped wisdom prevails and the parties show 'a patriotic vision for the sake of the country's interest,' noting that 'the main objective is restoring stability and civil peace and consolidating the state's full sovereignty.'

On Wednesday night, a drone targeted a vehicle in Deir Zahrani and another bombed an apartment in the Tyre district area of al-Hosh as Israeli jets carried out a violent strike on a building in the outskirts of Ansar. Seven people were injured in al-Hosh, the health ministry said. The Israeli army said its airstrikes in south Lebanon targeted Hezbollah "military infrastructure, arms depots and a rocket launchpad." Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite a ceasefire reached in late November, threatening to do so until Hezbollah has been disarmed. The Lebanese government tasked the army last week to submit a plan to disarm Hezbollah by the year end. Hezbollah says it would not hand over its weapons while Israeli strikes continue.

In Gaza and the West Bank, Israel buries Palestine
Israel is delivering a double blow to both Gaza and the West Bank. In the midst of indirect negotiations to hammer out a cease-fire agreement in Gaza, the Israeli army announced Wednesday that it is preparing to launch "a gradual, precise, and targeted operation in and around Gaza City, which currently constitutes the main military and administrative stronghold of Hamas," according to statements made by an officer during a press briefing. The prolonged offensive — called "Gideon's Chariots II" — is expected to last several months, as it "will continue until 2026," he added. The previous day, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the approval of the plan to conquer Gaza City that had previously been submitted to him by the chief of staff, as well as the recall of 60,000 reservists, effective at...
