Flintoff proud as Afghan refugee protege plays for Lancashire second team
LONDON: Andrew Flintoff has revealed his pride at seeing 'Field of Dreams' protege Adnan Miakhel, a refugee from Afghanistan, make his first appearance for Lancashire's second team.
The former England cricket captain, who made his name in cricket as a hugely talented all-rounder while playing for Lancashire, his native county, has been back in the public eye lately following the release of a new documentary detailing the painful recovery from his life-changing car crash.
The programme sees Flintoff speaking about how returning from show business to cricket has helped him gain fresh meaning in life, with Miakhel's appearance in a three-day friendly against Yorkshire – the traditional arch-rivals of northwest county Lancashire – uniting the worlds of entertainment and sport.
The Afghan refugee was the breakout star of Flintoff's television reality show about a scratch team of would-be cricketers based in Preston, Lancashire, and was awarded asylum in the United Kingdom after his mentor wrote to the Home Office (Britain's interior ministry) supporting his application.
Flintoff, reflecting on Miakhel's elevation from Lancashire's Under-18s last season to the second string this year, posted on X: 'Some journeys are longer and harder, I'm so proud of this fine young man.'
Miakhel scored 25 not out batting at number 10 in the first innings and dismissed first-teamers Jonny Tattersall and Matt Revis as he claimed figures of 2-72 from 13 overs.
The game at Liverpool's Northern Cricket Club is a friendly match which does not restrict teams to the usual standard 11 players and Miakhel is not listed to bat in the second innings.
Rossall School, which awarded Miakhel a scholarship, paid its own tribute, adding on X: 'Amazing to see current Y13 and 1XI (first team) cricket Captain Adnan M being presented with his 2XI (2nd XI) cap as he made his debut against Yorkshire.
'It is fantastic to see all of the hard work Adnan has put in paying off and we wish him all the success in the future with @lancscricket,' added the message from Rossall, whose former pupils include Liam Botham, the son of England cricket great Ian Botham, who also played cricket and both codes of rugby at a professional level in his own right.

The T20I series between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which is scheduled to be played in the United Arab Emirates, is now set to be turned into a trilateral series with the hosts making the third team. The Afghan side are scheduled to tour Pakistan in late summer for a bilateral T20I series in the current future tours programme cycle. However, with the prospect of this year's T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, an arrangement is being worked to move the series there and include the hosts as the third team, sources close to the matter stated. India are the hosts for this year's edition of the Asia Cup, but the tournament will be staged at a neutral venue after Pakistan and India agreed to host each other at neutral venues in multi-team tournaments because of geopolitical tensions. The month of September is locked as a tentative window for the tournament. Both, Pakistan and Afghanistan, haven't played each other on Pakistani soil. Though, Afghanistan played in Pakistan for the ICC Champion Trophy Pakistan and Afghanistan have never played each other on Pakistani soil. Ahead of the last iteration of the Asia Cup, which was played in the ODI format and was held across Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Afghanistan hosted Pakistan in Hambantota and Colombo for acclimatisation purposes ahead of the tournament in 2023. The last bilateral T20I series between the two teams was also played in the UAE in March 2023 and saw Afghanistan beat Pakistan across formats for the first time and also record their first series win. In what remains their last meeting, Afghanistan secured their maiden ODI win over Pakistan during the 50-over World Cup in 2023. Pakistan and UAE have never played each other outside a multi-team tournament. They first played each other in a six-team Austral-Asia Cup in 1994 and then came face to face in the 1996 and 2015 50-over World Cups. Their last meeting came in the 2016 Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Anderson stars in T20 comeback
England pace legend James Anderson marked a remarkable return to T20 cricket by delivering his career-best bowling figures in nearly 11 years, taking three wickets against Durham here at Chester-le-Street on Sunday. Anderson was named in Lancashire's playing XI for their T20 Blast clash against Durham, his first T20 appearance since August 2014. Anderson impressed with figures of 3/17 runs in his four overs, helping Lancashire secure a strong performance in the match. This marks his best bowling figures in the T20 format. According to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Atkinson sustained a hamstring injury during their one-off Test against Zimbabwe, which concluded on Saturday in Nottingham. The 27-year-old, as a result, will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team, while no time frame was shared by the cricket board for his recovery. "England and Surrey seamer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the upcoming Metro Bank One-Day Internationals against the West Indies due to a right hamstring strain," the ECB said in a statement. "Atkinson sustained the injury during England's Rothesay Test victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last week. "He will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team." Notably, the home side decided against making any changes to their squad for the ODI series against West Indies. The aforementioned series holds significant importance for the former world champions as it will be the first assignment of newly-appointed captain Harry Brook, who succeeded Jos Buttler, stepped down from the role after England lost all three of their ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 group-stage matches.
