'There were several tourists around, but the terrorists specifically targetted males after asking whether they were Hindus or Muslims. They then asked my father to recite an Islamic verse. When he failed to do so, they pumped three bullets. Later, the Indian Army reached the spot and rescued us,' Asavar recalled.

NHAI criticised for not ensuring NH 66 is free of potholes before monsoon in Mangaluru
The Tollgate Horata Samithi, Surathkal, has decried the apathy of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in ensuring National Highway 66 between Surathkal and Nanthoor becomes pothole-free before the onset of monsoon. 'NHAI has written the foreword for the highway death series with the tragic death of Surathkal Janath Colony resident Ashraf on the night of June 9, at Panambur,' claimed Samithi convener Muneer Katipalla. 'Riding a two-wheeler, Ashraf encountered a deep crater on NH 66 at Panambur and fell down. He was crushed by a tanker trailing that was behind his two-wheeler. Ashraf leaves behind his elderly mother, wife and children.' Communal deaths counted It appears only communal murders are counted in the coastal region while deaths on the highway remain unaccounted for, Mr. Katipalla regretted. Despite the Samithi repeatedly demanding restoration of the Surathkal-Nanthoor stretch of NH 66 before the onset of every monsoon, the NHAI does not act, thereby causing the deaths of several motorists every year. When the Samithi organised a peaceful dharna with their demands urging the elected representatives to act, the police booked an FIR against them while caution notices were pasted at night by the police on their doors. Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta, who should have been proactive in addressing this issue, has instead joined the bandwagon of those indulging in 'murder politics' in Dakshina Kannada district, Mr. Katipalla said. Sharing the stage with people who deliver provocative speeches to incite violence, the MP was also a part of the delegation of BJP leaders, including R. Ashok, B. Y. Vijayendra, and D. V. Sadananda Gowda, who 'threatened' the district administration that was struggling to restore peace in the district. With the onset of the monsoon, the NHAI might not be able to carry out repairs on the highway, and no one knows how many people would lose their lives in the coming days. Asking the MP not to follow in the footsteps of MLAs D Vedavyasa Kamath and Y. Bharath Shetty, Mr. Katipalla urged Capt. Chowta to take immediate steps to ensure the highways remain pothole-free. 'Potholes on highways do not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims,' he said.

Video: Rajasthan Influencers Distribute Beer Among Public On Ekadashi, 7 Arrested
A group of social media influencers was arrested in Rajasthan's Jaipur after a video of them distributing alcohol on road during Nirjala Ekadashi, a holy day for the Hindus, went viral. The incident sparked significant outrage, leading to swift police action. The viral clip shows influencer Lappu Sachin aka Sachin Singh, along with six others, distributing glasses and bottles of beer to passersby on a busy Jaipur street. In one instance, an auto driver was allegedly made to drink and then drive. The seven influencers arrested were - Sachin Singh, Pradeep Kadwasra, Vikas Verma, Abhishek Nirmal, Sunil Kumar, Aditya Mahariya, and Ankit Meghwal. Their public 'alcohol party' did not go down well with several bystanders, some of whom were visibly uncomfortable while others laughed and joined in. The incident gained attention after a citizen alerted the Jaipur Police. "Hello Jaipur police. These boys are stopping people on the road and making them drink and drive. Fine all of them and give these boys a taste of jail's drink for a few days," he said on X. Hello @jaipur_police ye ladke logon ko road par rok rok ke drink and drive karwa rahe hain. In sabka challan kaato aur in ladko ko thode din jail ki drink pilao — Madhur (@ThePlacardGuy) June 10, 2025 Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Digant Anand confirmed the video was recorded on Nirjala Ekadashi, and the act was deemed offensive to religious sentiments. During the course of interrogation, the arrested youths told the police they never intended to hurt anyone's religious sentiments and recorded the video only to gain followers on social media. They later released an apology video, holding their ears and kneeling on the ground. Some had torn or dishevelled clothes on, suggesting they may have been manhandled by the cops in custody. Rajasthan BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj shared the apology clip on social media and wrote, "They were distributing beer on the streets in style for a reel. Jaipur Police taught them a lesson." छैले बनकर, सड़क पर बियर बाँटने की रील बना रहे थे जयपुर पुलिस ने इनकी रेल बना दी — Laxmikant bhardwaj (@lkantbhardwaj) June 10, 2025 In India, distributing or consuming alcohol in public is illegal in most states. The Motor Vehicles Act (Section 185) penalises drunk driving with fines up to Rs 10,000 and imprisonment for up to two years. State excise laws ban unlicensed distribution of alcohol and impose strict penalties. Many states also observe dry days during religious events like Nirjala Ekadashi.

US Club embezzlement case: HC refuses pre-arrest bail to former deputy secretary
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of the main accused in the alleged embezzlement of around ₹77.52 crore from the defence-run United Services Club, popularly known as the US Club, in Colaba. A single judge bench of justice Rajesh Patil rejected the pre-arrest bail plea of the Bernadette Varma, the club's former deputy finance secretary, in which she allegedly admitted that she had purchased 21 properties in Mumbai—14 flats and seven shops—in her and her husband's name, and luxury cars like a Range Rover, a Mercedes and an MG Hector from the embezzled funds. Her bail plea said that she later sold the cars and then invested over ₹8 crore in fixed deposits and other financial instruments through consultants. Justice Patil rejected the plea, saying she had failed to make a case for the court to grant protection. Varma and two others, including the auditor appointed by the defence-run club, were booked in February based on a complaint lodged by Captain Vishnusaurabh Sharma, the club's secretary. According to the complaint, the accused were allegedly involved in fraudulent activities between January 2005 and October 2024 that resulted in financial losses worth ₹77.52 crore for the club, which is jointly managed by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Captain Sharma told the police that when he perused the club's balance sheet prepared by Varma for the financial year 2023-24, which was to be submitted to the club's chartered accountant, he noticed that the value of the liquor stock mentioned in the document was quite high. When he inquired about the high liquor stock, he was told that there had been a mistake in maintaining the stock records, as the liquor was sourced from different places at various rates. The club then asked a chartered accountancy firm, CP Pandey and Company, to undertake a special audit. However, the firm's audit report in August 2024 did not raise any issues related to the liquor stock, nor any other financial irregularities. Meanwhile, Varma resigned from her job citing health reasons and was eventually relieved in October 2024. The fraud came to light in January 2025 when the club's president received an anonymous letter revealing huge financial irregularities in the club's operation. The letter added that Varma had transferred ₹11 crore to CP Pandey and Co between August 5 and October 9, 2024. According to Captain Sharma's complaint, when he confronted Varma about the allegations made in the letter, she accepted that she had transferred the amount and also shared the details on WhatsApp. A further investigation by the club revealed that during her tenure, Varma had allegedly opened several bank accounts in the names of the club's vendors and misappropriated around ₹77 crore by transferring money to these bank accounts.
