Vicente Luque vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio slugfest set for UFC Rio
Vicente Luque (23-11-1 MMA, 16-7 UFC) will take on Santiago Ponzinibbio (30-9 MMA, 12-8 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 261, promotion officials announced Monday. The event takes place at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 11 with an expected stream on ESPN+.
Both fighters will be working off losses from earlier this year and will no doubt be eager to get back in the win column.
Luque has alternated losses and wins his past five fights. This past December, he picked up a bonus for a 52-second submission of Themba Gorimba. But in June, he returned to the loss column when he was choked out by Kevin Holland at UFC 316. Although he was born in the U.S., Luque has not had a "home" fight in Brazil since 2017.
Ponzinibbio has dropped three of his past four fights. In May, he was knocked out in the third round by Daniel Rodriguez. Before that, he knocked out Carlston Harris in January to snap a two-fight skid. The 38-year-old Argentinian has six career UFC bonuses on his resume.
With the addition, the UFC Rio lineup now includes:
Charles Oliveira vs. Rafael Fiziev
Thomas Petersen vs. Vitor Petrino
Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Julia Polastri
Stewart Nicoll vs. Lucas Rocha
Jhonata Diniz vs. Mario Pinto
Irina Alekseeva vs. Bia Mesquita

Texans' C.J. Gardner-Johnson reportedly could be back for Week 1 following knee injury
On Thursday, the Houston Texans thought they might have lost star defensive back C.J. Garnder-Johnson for the season after he suffered a knee injury in the final day of practice at The Greenbrier. Now, he's potentially in line to return to the lineup for Week 1's showdown at SoFi Stadium. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gardner-Johnson's ACL remains intact after being carted off during Thursday's practice. After further testing at The Greenbrier, it was revealed that the injury was not as severe as initially feared, but he's expected to miss several weeks. Schefter believes that Gardner-Johnson could play Week 1 on the road against the Los Angeles Rams, but other reports indicate that the Texans won't rush back the defensive back, so a late-September addition could be more in line given the injury's severity. Even if Gardner-Johnson is limited to begin the regular season, the news that it is not an ACL tear is good news Houston, which added the Pro Bowl safety as the missing link to form one of the league's top secondaries with All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., cornerback Kamari Lassiter and nickel defender Jalen Pitre. Acquired in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and former first-round pick Kenyon Green, Gardner-Johnson was an anchor for the Eagles' secondary en route to a Super Bowl title last season. He totaled six interceptions and 12 pass breakups. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans seemed concerned about the severity of the injury, calling the moment 'heartbreaking' on the field. "I'm always nervous as a head coach anytime I see anybody hit the ground, it's tough to watch," Ryans said. "So, we'll see, we'll evaluate C.J., see where he is." Since the Texans don't have a set time for Gardner-Johnson's return, they could still look to free agency for further depth at safety for the remainder of the preseason. Safety Jimmie Ward, who remains out with a foot injury, is currently dealing with legal matters after his arrest in June and could be suspended several games by the league office. For now, the Texans will turn to defensive backs Myles Bryant and M.J. Stewart in the meantime. They could also see if Jaylin Smith, the team's third-round pick out of USC, can fill in for reps during the preseason. This article originally appeared on Texans Wire: Texans DB C.J. Luka Doncic Breaks His Silence On New Lakers Contract
Luka Doncic Breaks His Silence On New Lakers Contract originally appeared on The Spun. The Los Angeles Lakers wasted no time signing Luka Doncic to an extension this offseason. On Saturday, the first day the franchise was able to offer him one, the Lakers signed the Slovenian-born superstar to a three-year, $165 million contract per ESPN's Shams Charania — with the third year being a player option. The way Los Angeles structured the deal it will make Luka eligible to sign for a massive four years, $323 million in the summer of 2027 after missing out on the supermax in Dallas. Or, by declining the option, he could sign for an even bigger five-year contract worth around $418 million at age 29. The past few months have been busy ones for Doncic who has seemingly transformed his body heading in the 2025-26 season as he looks to retake his spot as a top 2-3 player in the NBA. Taking to social media earlier today, the five-time All-Star announced the signing of his new deal to remain with the Purple & Gold. "I just signed my extension with the Lakers," Luka shared. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning. 💜💛" Doncic now becomes the centerpiece of the Lakers' future with LeBron James likely heading for retirement before the decade closes out — and the organization couldn't have found a better player to hand the keys to. Since arriving in the NBA at 19, Doncic has averaged less than 27 points per game just once — and that was in his Rookie of the Year campaign with the Mavs. Additionally in his seven professional seasons stateside, he's already racked up more first-team All-NBAs than Steph Curry, Chris Paul and Kawhi Leonard — all of whom he's much younger than and all of whom will one day reside in the Naismith Hall of Fame. In his recent interview with Men's Health, Doncic shouted out Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as inspirations for getting into tip-top shape. "Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better," Luka said. "... Every summer I try my best to work on different things. Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better." "This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step," he concluded. "But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop."Luka Doncic Breaks His Silence On New Lakers Contract first appeared on The Spun on Aug 2, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.

Nevada court apparently clears way for former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to sue NFL over emails
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada court apparently cleared the way Monday for a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' was used to destroy Gruden's career by leaking old emails he had sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.' Gruden's lawsuit alleged that Goodell and the league pressured the Raiders to fire Gruden by leaking emails containing racist, sexist and homophobic comments that Gruden sent, when he was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011 to 2018. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later. The NFL declined to comment on the ruling. Gruden was Raiders head coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California. He's seeking monetary damages, alleging that selective disclosure of the emails and their publication by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times ruined his career and endorsement contracts. Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018. He later consulted for the New Orleans Saints in 2023. He is now a part-owner and consultant for the Nashville Kats, a team in the Arena Football One league.
