Kolkata, Jul 2 (PTI) The food industry has huge growth potential in eastern India, industry leaders said on Saturday, noting the existing challenges in the region.
Bhikharam Chandmal Director Ashish Agarwal noted that although eastern India is a major consumer of sweets and namkeen, it is yet to emerge as a manufacturing hub.
Indian Ice Cream Manufacturers Association vice president Anuvrat Pabrai said there is significant growth potential in the ice cream market in the region.
'While the region currently accounts for only 15 per cent of the country's total ice cream consumption, compared to 35 per cent in the west and 25 per cent each in the north and south, the low base is viewed as an opportunity for rapid expansion,' he said.

Insolvency resolution timeline shrinks by 2 months since March
Representative image (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The number of days taken for finalisation of the insolvency resolution plan has dropped from 752 days at the end of the March quarter to 694 days at the end of June, but remains significantly higher than the prescribed 180 days, which can be extended by another 90. According to the latest numbers released by the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India, 78% of the resolution plans have been ongoing for more than 270 days, indicating the extent of delay in the process that was meant to ensure strict timelines so that creditors can realise maximum value from the assets. But, litigation in multiple forums as well as limited capacity in the National Company Law Tribunal have resulted in enormous delays. The average time taken for resolution of 1,258 corporate insolvency cases was estimated at 602 days at the end of June. The data also showed that during the June quarter, number of pending cases has once again gone up to 1,905 from 1,884 in Jan-March - pointing to the delays. Despite the delays, lenders and other creditors find IBC an effective tool to get defaulters to pay up or lose control of their companies. The June quarter also saw an important change with the cases initiated by financial creditors (lenders or homebuyers) outnumbering those by operational creditors. At the end of June, of the 8,492 cases initiated, 4,002 were initiated by financial creditors, while 3,963 were by operational creditors. At the end of March, of the 8,308 cases filed, 3,893 were by financial creditors - six less than operational creditors. For operational creditors, especially suppliers, IBC often helped recover their dues, reflected in the high number of withdrawals. More than half the cases filed by them were closed on appeal review or withdrawal and these closures amounted to 68% of the overall closures. Besides, till June, resolved cases resulted in realisation of 32.5% of the admitted claims, which was marginally higher at 33.7% for large cases (those with admitted claims of over Rs 1,000 crore). "The airline stands ready to resume these services as soon as bilateral arrangements between the two countries allow," Elbers said, as quoted by PTI, adding that IndiGo, guided by its entrepreneurial spirit, remains committed to identifying and pursuing commercially viable opportunities. Before the coronavirus pandemic, IndiGo operated daily flights from Delhi to Chengdu until February 6, 2020, and from Kolkata to Guangzhou until February 1, 2020. Both Indian and Chinese carriers had offered direct services between the two nations. The flights were suspended following the outbreak of COVID-19 and remained halted due to tensions along the eastern Ladakh border. Air India 's direct flights from Delhi to Shanghai were also suspended in early 2020. Sources said on Tuesday that India and China are in an "advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flights soon, reported PTI. Earlier this year, on January 27, the two countries had agreed in principle to restart direct air services as part of efforts to "stabilise and rebuild" bilateral ties.

On Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said India and China are in an 'advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flights between the two countries soon. Elbers said IndiGo operated daily flights between India and China prior to the coronavirus pandemic. 'The airline stands ready to resume these services as soon as bilateral arrangements between the two countries allow," he said in a statement on Wednesday. Elbers also said that guided by its entrepreneurial spirit, the airline remains committed to identifying and pursuing commercially viable opportunities. IndiGo was operating daily flights from Delhi to Chengdu till February 6, 2020, and from Kolkata to Guangzhou till February 1, 2020. Direct flights were operational between the two countries till early 2020 before getting suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both Indian and Chinese carriers had direct services. The services remained suspended in view of the eastern Ladakh border row. Air India also had flights from Delhi to Shanghai, and those were also suspended in early 2020.
