2 held as Bengaluru couple under ‘digital arrest' loses Rs 4.75 crore to ‘international cybercrime network'

The Bengaluru police Tuesday arrested two alleged money mules in a case involving fraud amounting to Rs 4.75 crore, following a tip-off from the cybercrime unit in Chennai that unravelled a sophisticated international cybercriminal network spanning India, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
The accused have been identified as Eshwar Singh and Ramnarayan Chowdhary, both based in Hyderabad.
The Southeast Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) division's investigation began when investigators in Chennai, working on an unrelated cybercrime case, alerted Sarah Fathima, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bengaluru Southeast, about a potential victim in the city. Further probe allegedly led them to discover a meticulously orchestrated fraud that had been operating undetected for months.
The police found that a retired engineer and his wife from BTM Layout had been accused of money laundering and subjected to 'digital arrest' by the fraudsters since March, officers said. The elderly couple subsequently transferred money to various accounts, believing they were complying with legal procedures. 'They were unaware that they were being manipulated and had lost Rs 4.75 crore,' a senior officer explained.
DCP Fathima said the couple in BTM Layout has a son and a daughter. 'The son lives in Malleswaram, and the daughter is in Hebbal. They have not informed the children. They even pledged their property papers,' she added.
The breakthrough in the investigation came when the police traced Rs 10 lakh of the defrauded amount to a Hyderabad resident's bank account, the police said. When questioned, the account holder claimed he had accepted the money on behalf of his landlord, Eshwar Singh, a casino enthusiast who had already fled to Sri Lanka. Singh was later detained at Hyderabad airport upon his return, and taken to Bengaluru for questioning.
He, however, maintained his innocence, claiming the funds were legitimate casino refunds. The police verification, officers said, revealed that he had visited a Sri Lankan casino 33 times in recent months, including a visit during which he purchased Rs 25 lakh worth of casino coupons and lost Rs 15 lakh in gambling.
Due to irregularities in filing taxes, Singh had requested that the casino transfer the remaining refund to his tenant's account rather than his own. The casino, recognising him as a regular customer, complied with this unusual request.
'We suspect the cybercriminals who defrauded the elderly couple instructed them to transfer the funds to the same account Singh had provided to the casino,' the investigating officer said. Singh was later arrested.
The police said they are now investigating whether the casino has ties to international cybercrime networks, particularly with operations in Cambodia, where some investigative roots have been traced.
Officers said the probe also led to the arrest of Ramnarayan Chowdhary, a Hyderabad-based businessman who runs a departmental store. Investigators believe cybercriminals befriended him through regular purchases at his store before exploiting his bank accounts to launder proceeds from victims across the country

Bus rams lorry on NH, 18 injured

At least 18 passengers were injured when a Hyderabad-bound private sleeper bus from Karnataka rammed into a stationary lorry on NH 167 in Narayanpet district in the early hours of Thursday. The bus, carrying 29 passengers from Shivamogga to Hyderabad, met with the accident around 4.30 a.m. The lorry had come to a halt in the middle of the highway due to a mechanical breakdown, and heavy overnight rain had further reduced visibility, explained Inspector Ramlal from Makthal police. 'Although highway patrol teams had placed reflective cones to alert oncoming traffic, the speeding bus failed to stop in time and ploughed straight into the vehicle,' he said. The impact left the front portion of the bus completely mangled. Four passengers suffered fractures, while five others, including three children, sustained spinal injuries. The bus driver's leg was also fractured and the co-driver was injured too. All the injured were given first aid at the government hospital in Makthal. Police have registered a case and an investigation is on.

Stampede deaths: HC grants bail to RCB marketing head, 3 DNA executives

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) marketing head Nikhil Sosale and three other executives associated with the event management company DNT Entertainment Network, arrested by the Police in connection with the ghastly stampede outside of Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4 that claimed 11 lives and left scores of others injured. Robert Vadra misses ED appearance due to flu, says he's cooperating

New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Advocate Suman Jyoti Khaitan, counsel for businessman Robert Vadra, on Tuesday addressed the media through a virtual press conference to clarify his client's absence from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) appearance in a money laundering case. Khaitan, speaking via Zoom, said recent media reports wrongly implied that Vadra was evading ED summons. 'These reports are misleading. Vadra developed flu-like symptoms and was advised to undergo a COVID-19 test, which he has taken. He is following all necessary health precautions,' Khaitan stated. Reaffirming Vadra's cooperation with the investigation, Khaitan said, 'He has willingly offered to join the probe through virtual mode and has previously submitted voluminous documentation to the ED.' The lawyer further stated that Vadra's prior appearances, including a three-day questioning in April in a separate money laundering case linked to a 2008 Haryana land deal. Khaitan also disclosed that Vadra plans to travel abroad later this month to attend his daughter's graduation ceremony, but remains open to participating in the ED probe either before or after the trip. Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was summoned by the ED recently in connection with a case involving UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. Sources said Vadra sought a deferment of the summons and will be given a new date for recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). In 2023, the ED filed a chargesheet alleging that Bhandari purchased and renovated a property at 12, Bryanston Square, London, on Vadra's instructions and with his financial support--an allegation Vadra strongly denies. He has dismissed the case as a 'political witch hunt' aimed at 'harassing him for political reasons.' The agency is also probing Vadra in another money laundering matter linked to land transactions in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where he and his mother have previously been questioned. (ANI)
