Inaugural edition of World Super Kabaddi League to be held in Dubai

The organisers of the World Super Kabaddi League (WSKL) on Monday (June 30, 2025) announced that the inaugural edition of the tournament, featuring about 30 countries, will be held in Dubai, tentatively in February-March next year.
Backed by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF), WSKL will adopt a franchise-based model featuring eight teams in its inaugural season. Each team will have a strong international presence alongside Indian talent.
"Kabaddi has always deserved a larger stage not just for India but for the global sporting community. With WSKL, our goal is to reimagine the sport for a global audience, unlock international talent, and take decisive steps towards Olympic recognition," said Sambhav Jain, Director and Founder, SJ uplift Kabaddi Pvt Ltd that operates the League.
The league has committed a total player purse of Rs 48 crore across its eight franchises, underscoring the strong investment appetite for this new sports property.
WSKL has already secured interest and participation from prominent kabaddi nations including South Korea, Iran, Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Canada, and the United States, with discussions underway to onboard additional countries, the release added.

The Indian T20 machinery is currently infused with such astonishing variety that the team management will find themselves in a tight spot confirming their wonts and attributes, as the road to a world title defence firmly begins with the Asia Cup in September. Armed with possibilities, the top order could face the stiffest competition, starting with the continental event in the UAE. Batting maverick Suryakumar Yadav's side can, at best, field three specialist batters, including himself, with the arrival of head coach Gautam Gambhir and cut-throat competition demanding more floating all-rounders and secondary skill-sets. Despite his stunning ascent with three T20I tons in the last calendar year, Sanju Samson's opening spot will spur a lot of interest in India's immediate assignment after the English pacers winded him down in January. The immense competition among dazzling names in the circuit will also be the reason why southpaw Tilak Varma could find himself between a rock and a hard place, despite a breakout season in the India blues at No. 3. Even as IPL exploits no longer guarantee a spot in the India squad, the league continues to be an enticing hotbed for selection dynamics, a fine meter to gauge radical shifts among batters on the national radar. It is exactly why openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will have to bide time behind Abhishek Sharma and Samson to wriggle their way back in. The IPL 2025 season also exemplifies why a marauding Shreyas Iyer was a major summer takeaway, and a T20I recall might bolster India's collective top-order firepower to the next level. But, is there room for the 30-year-old in the top 4? With captain Suryakumar moving down to No. 4 and keeper-batter Samson and the deadly Abhishek pinned up top, Iyer could draw competition with Tilak, who has had a largely forgettable 2025 season thus far. Batting down below the No.3 slot, where he clobbered two successive centuries against South Africa last October, Tilak failed to rev up the Mumbai Indians middle-order this season. Far from his best, Tilak aggregated 343 runs at a 138.30 strike rate in 13 innings. While that may not warrant immediate scrutiny on the T20I board, the Hyderabad batter may have left a certain window open for Iyer and others with his tepidity against the slower bowlers. Pulverising spin has been a cornerstone of India's T20 overhaul since the last World Cup. From July 2024 onwards, spinners from Full-Member nations have been worst-hit by India's spin charge, conceding 1296 runs at 9.67 runs per over, significantly placed ahead of a surging Australia (8.97). While the Aussies are refurbishing their roster with towering batters and their long levers, the Indians bank on a band of innate bats, attuned to the spin takedown manual. With the Asia Cup likely to witness tacky pitches and the showpiece T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka also slated to add a spring in the stride of the spinners next year, the defending champions may just be the juggernaut that oppositions would grow to fear the most. Tilak's bittersweet returns in this regard could shake up the T20I top-order on the whole. In 17 T20s this year, Tilak's scoring rates against spin have surprisingly plunged to 121.42 (168 balls) from 152.55 (210 balls) in 2024. Surrounded by mighty middle-overs spin dominators in Samson, Abhishek and skipper Suryakumar, Tilak may feel the pinch and the need to amp up his strike rates from the middling zone to fend off an Iyer challenge. The spin-devouring Iyer not only flattened middle-overs bowling, but also ironed out chinks against high pace in the 2025 season, improving considerably against the short ball. Iyer's supreme haul against spin in the middle-overs fetched Punjab Kings 171 runs at a 154.05 SR, with his overall 164.81 strike rate in the phase only bettered by Suryakumar among Indian batters in the IPL season. Tilak's striking, meanwhile, meandered down to 131.55 for 246 runs in the phase, even slower against spin at 121.84 for 145 runs. Even if Iyer isn't exactly back in the equation, the No. 3 race could even boil down to a tussle between Tilak and Samson, should Suryakumar persist at No. 4. In his brief run at the top, Samson's all-out approach marked a pertinent weakness against high pace early in the innings during the T20Is in South Africa, a mercurial series where he ended up with scores of 107, 0, 0 and 109*. Against England at home, the Kerala batter could not break free from the pace curse with five successive dismissals against the short ball, jotting another bewildering streak where he failed to cross 26. India's rigid choices of back-up keepers in the finishing mould in Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel would also add a layer of complexity if Samson fails to seal a top-three spot. Currently the lead wicketkeeper-batter in the T20I set-up, Samson would not be far off from a run at number three either for his prolific IPL record in the position over the years. He continues to hold the most runs (1952) at No.3 since 2020 in the IPL, posing a higher average (38.27) than Suryakumar (35.17) and Iyer (36.03) while also smoking 99 sixes (highest). For the belligerent show to roll on without immediate hassles, India will hope that Samson and Tilak/Iyer form specific answers to two out of three top-order slots, preventing another commotion of rehearsals to find their world-beating combination.

Stock market today: The Nifty 50 index climbed back above the 25,000 level on Monday, August 18, for the first time since July 25, as a series of positive developments over the weekend helped counter concerns about a possible 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports by the Trump administration. Meanwhile, BSE index Sensex also soared nearly 1,100 points, rallying to 81,678.77 in Monday's trading session. Market experts said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on potential cuts in goods and services tax (GST) has boosted sentiment, especially in consumption-driven sectors. Analysts believe that automobiles, financials, consumer durables, and domestic-oriented industries connected to infrastructure spending stand to gain the most. 'The Prime Minister recent announcement of potential GST reforms is a significant positive. These measures are expected to reduce the cost of essential goods, which should boost consumer spending and corporate profitability. This will likely improve market sentiment and attract fresh investment,' said Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet. Indian equity indices wrapped up the week on a subdued note, pressured by continued selling in key sectors and dampened global cues. The Nifty 50 managed a marginal rise of 11.95 points to close at 24,631.30, while the Sensex added 57.75 points to finish at 80,597.66. According to Choice Broking, Nifty is currently hovering near its short-term support of 24,590 (20-day EMA). 'The broader setup remains cautiously bearish to sideways, with the Nifty trapped between key averages. A breakout above 24,800 could trigger momentum buying towards 25,000+, while a break below 24,300 may invite fresh selling pressure, dragging the index towards 24,000–23,800. Traders should remain tactical with a buy-on-dips and sell-on-rise approach, keeping a close eye on the EMA cluster for directional cues,' the firm said. Support Levels:- 24200-24000 Resistance Levels :- 24700-24800 Overall Bias :- Sideways To Bullish The Bank Nifty index ended the week at 55,341.85, up 0.61% compared to the previous week's close. The weekly chart reflects buying support at lower levels, with the index successfully sustaining above the key 55,000 level. 'The Bank Nifty index formed a bullish-bodied candle with a slight upper wick, accompanied by consistent trading volumes. This price action reflects the possibility of a sideways or consolidation phase in the near term. As long as the index holds above the 54,800 marks, a 'buy on dips'; strategy remains advisable, with upside targets placed at 55,800 and 56,000. The Bank Nifty index is likely to face significant resistance in the 55,500–56,000 range. If the index continues to move higher, ICICI Bank & HDFC Bank from the private banking sector is expected to support the uptrend. Similarly, in the public sector banking space, SBIN is anticipated to show strength and contribute to any potential upside,' the brokerage firm added. What happens to your credit score if you close an unused credit card

Banks evaluate the rewards program for their existing credit cards regularly. They also keep launching new credit cards regularly based on the evolving customer preferences. So, a change in the rewards program on your existing credit card or the introduction of a new credit card may make you wonder whether you should close an existing credit card and/or apply for a new credit card. In this article, we will look at some of the reasons why people close their old/unused credit cards and their impact on the credit score. There are various reasons why people close their credit cards. In the last few years, there has been a steady shift in why customers close their credit cards. The decision is no longer just about dissatisfaction. It's about economics, evolving benefits, better alternatives, etc. Some of the reasons why people close their old/unused credit cards include the following. High annual fees: Some banks give some of their credit cards as first-year free (FYF). In the case of some banks, they charge the first-year fee. But, in return, they provide adequate welcome benefits that compensate the cardholder for the fee paid. Some banks charge the first-year fee. However, the joining fee is reversed if the cardholder spends a specified amount in the first 90 days or so of card issuance. In all the above scenarios, the cardholder gets a chance to use the features and benefits of the card in the first year without feeling the impact of the joining fee. The bank levies the annual or renewal fee from the 2nd year onwards. Most banks link the reversal of the annual or renewal fee with the spending in the previous card anniversary year. If the cardholder is not able to achieve those spends, they have to pay the annual or renewal fee. Customers holding multiple cards for different types of spending often miss the milestone spends for the annual fee waiver. If the annual fee is high and there are no or inadequate renewal benefits, the cardholder opts to close the credit card. Rewards program devaluation: When a new credit card is launched, the bank usually offers a higher reward rate to attract new customers. Once the bank achieves a specific number of cardholders or market share, it re-evaluates the rewards program. Some of the changes they may make can include: A reduction in the reward points for every Rs. 100 spent for all categories or specific categories, exclusion of specific categories from earning reward points, capping on monthly reward points that can be earned, reduction in the redemption value per reward point, reduction in the ratio for transfer of reward points to partners, etc. If the rewards program is massively devalued in one or multiple categories as mentioned above, there may be little to no case left for continuing with the card. In such a scenario, the customer may close the credit card before renewal. For example, in September 2023, the Axis Bank Magnus Credit Card saw a devaluation in its rewards program. Some of these devaluations include discontinuation of the monthly milestone benefit of 25,000 EDGE Reward Points on Rs. 1 lakh monthly spends, downward revision in the transfer ratio from 5:4 to 5:2 for transfer of EDGE Reward Points to various airline and hotel partners. Some features have been reduced or withdrawn: Many credit cards offer various features and benefits like a specific percentage discount on a specific merchant/category, BOGO offer on movies, complimentary airport/railway lounge access, complimentary golf access, airport meet and greet service, complimentary annual memberships (Amazon Prime, Swiggy One, etc.), etc. While these features and benefits add value to the customer, they come at a cost to the bank. From time to time, banks review the features and benefits offered on the cards. The bank may reduce or remove one or more benefits to make the program sustainable so that it can be offered for the long term. What if the customer has taken a credit card specifically for a particular benefit, and that benefit has been substantially reduced or taken away completely? There is no case to continue with the card. Loss of key features plays a role in card closure. Complimentary airport lounge access, for example, became a marquee benefit a few years back. Over the last couple of years, most banks have either linked complimentary airport lounge access to monthly/quarterly spends, reduced the number of complimentary lounge accesses, or discontinued it. Such changes prompt customers to rethink whether the card is worth keeping. For example, effective 15th July 2025, the EazyDiner Credit Card saw a major devaluation in the features and benefits. Some of these devaluations included a capping of Rs. 2,000 on the monthly discount, discontinuation of complimentary airport lounge access, discontinuation of the BOGO offer on movie tickets, etc. The credit limit is low: There can be a difference between the proposed and actual limit given on a credit card. When the customer avails of a pre-approved credit card offer and gets a lower credit limit than expected, it is disappointing. In such a case, the customer may not activate the card at all. As per RBI rules, if the card is not activated within 37 days of issuance, it must be closed automatically. 'At ZET Partner, which is our B2B2C distribution business, we see roughly 5–8% of customers closing cards simply because they are unhappy with the credit limit,' said Manish Shara, Co-founder and CEO, ZET. ZET is on a mission to help 400 million unserved and underserved Indians build their credit score and enhance their financial health. Sometimes, the bank reduces the credit limit on existing credit cards for its customers. For example, if the bank perceives a difficult macro situation, it may reduce the credit limit for several credit card customers as a precautionary measure. At times, if the bank systems flag risks due to a strange behaviour by an individual credit cardholder, the bank may reduce the credit limit for that particular cardholder. Better cards are available: From time to time, banks introduce new credit cards with better features and benefits compared to existing ones in the market. In such a scenario, the customers may apply for the new credit cards to enjoy better features and benefits. It leaves existing cards unused, leading to their closure. In the earlier section, we understood some of the reasons why customers close their credit cards. Let us now look at the impact of credit card closure on the credit score. Increase in the credit utilisation ratio: The credit utilisation ratio measures the percentage of the credit limit being used from the total credit limit available. For example, a cardholder has a credit limit of Rs. 10 lakhs across all credit cards and spends Rs. 2 lakhs/month with them. In this case, the credit utilisation ratio of the cardholder is 20%. When you close a credit card(s) and maintain the same monthly spending, your credit utilisation ratio will increase. Continuing our earlier example, suppose the cardholder closes two credit cards with a total credit limit of Rs. 5 lakhs. The cardholder will be left with a credit limit of Rs. 5 lakhs across the remaining credit cards. If the cardholder continues spending Rs. 2 lakhs/month, the credit utilisation ratio will increase to 40% from the earlier 20%. Credit Information Companies (CICs) like CRIF High Mark use the credit utilisation ratio as one of the parameters for calculating the credit score. A credit utilisation ratio of 30% or lower contributes positively towards increasing the credit score. On the other hand, a credit utilisation ratio of more than 30% contributes to decreasing the credit score. 'The impact of closing a credit card depends largely on the credit utilisation ratio. After credit card closure, if your overall utilisation ratio crosses around 40%, the effect starts turning negative. At a 50–75% credit utilisation ratio, your score can drop by 20–50 points. Between a 75–90% credit utilisation ratio, the drop in credit score may be 50–75 points. Above a 90% credit utilisation ratio, you could lose more than 75 points almost immediately,' adds Manish Shara. Reduces the length of the credit history: When you close an old credit card, it reduces the length of your credit history. Credit age is one of the parameters that goes into calculating the credit score. A higher credit age contributes positively to increasing the credit score. On the other hand, the closure of an old credit card contributes to decreasing the credit score. 'Closing your oldest card can shorten your credit history, which influences how lenders view your stability. While it may be sensible to close newer unused cards, it is rarely wise to close your longest-held account,' adds Manish Shara. We have discussed how closing an old credit card can increase your credit utilisation ratio and reduce the length of your credit history. Both, these factors impact your credit score negatively. So, what can you do instead? You can request the bank to make the credit card lifetime free instead of closing it. Once the card becomes a lifetime free card, you need not worry about closing it. All you need to do is do a small transaction every few months to keep the card active. Also, if you have to close an old credit card, there will be a short-term impact on your credit score. However, when you continue making regular, timely bill payments and maintain a credit utilisation ratio at 30% or lower, the credit score will recover in the next few months. 'The takeaway is simple: the decision to close a card should be strategic, not emotional. We advise customers to weigh the benefits lost against the potential impact on their credit profile. We tell them to always consider how it affects both utilisation and credit age, before taking the final call,' concludes Manish Shara.
