, Neeraj, Neeraj' as he battled back after a foul on his first throw to etch his name in the winner's list in the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Saturday night.
The 15000-odd spectators who almost filled up the stands, much like a Bengaluru FC home match in the Indian Super League, went back singing and dancing to the popular numbers of AR Rahman after they watched their favourite star take the gold beating the challenge from former world champion Julius Yego of Kenya. The two good friends went head-to-head as the competition warmed up after the first round which saw Neeraj check his run-up, before fouling his attempt in what looked like a big heave.

Yego, who went in sixth in the list of 12, came up with an effort of 80.07 as he became the first athlete on the day to breach the 80m mark. Brazilian Luiz Mauricio Da Silva improved it to 80.31m but Chopra was last in the order and came up with his first big throw of the night that landed at 82.99m. The illuminated marks on the field were put at 75m and 80m and then it was straight to the World Lead mark of 91.06m by German Juilan Weber.
As the swirling head wind challenged some of the best javelin throwers in the business, the first thrower, India's Sahil Silwal, who twisted his ankle earlier, recorded a foul. Yego failed to improve his mark, settling at 79.73m, while Asian silver medallist Sachin Yadav came up with a big one that measured 82.33. Sri Lankan Rumesh Pathirage raised the level of the competition with a heave of 84.34m but Neeraj Chopra was in no mood to leave it late as he nailed the gold with a biggest heave of the day: 86.18m.
Yego found his biggest throw of the day on his fourth attempt, as the field reduced to the top 9 after the first three rounds, that measured 84.51m. It was Yego's season's best effort which got him the silver and pushed Pathirage to settle for the bronze with his best of 84.34m.
Chopra fouled his fourth and then recorded 84.07m on his penultimate attempt before the top-8 lined up for one last attempt. Neeraj was last in the order again but he had the gold in his pocket even before he went to the start of his run-up as Yego's challenge ended with a sixth round throw of 82.45m.
The Indian star still tried to go past his best of the day but it was not to be as he settled for a last round of 82.22m.
India's Sachin Yadav (82.33) finished fourth while Yashvir Singh (79.65) finished in eighth place. Rio Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler failed to get into the top-8

London, Aug 3 (PTI) Prasidh Krishna has the ability to bowl 'magic balls' and the pacer needs to be given an extended run to serve India for a long time, said bowling coach Morne Morkel here on Sunday. HT Image Speaking to reporters after rain forced the series decider to day five with England needing 35 runs and four wickets in hand, Morkel praised Prasidh and Mohammed Siraj for keeping India in the game despite hundreds from Joe Root and Harry Brook on day four. 'In the same breath as Siraj, Prasidh has also in this tour found a bit of confidence. If you look at the first Test match to today, his consistency, his line and lengths, he improved a lot and he's a guy that I believe can be a very good Test bowler for India,' said Morkel. 'He's just a guy that needs a bit of time and he needs to be backed with a bit of confidence and every spell, he's a guy that can create that magic ball for you with an extra bounce and pace,' said the former South Africa fast bowler. Prasidh struck twice in the final session to keep India alive in the game while Siraj once again put his tired body on the line and bowled an extended eight-over spell in the morning before building pressure alongside Prasidh in the last half hour of play. Jasprit Bumrah was rested from the Oval Test due to workload management but Siraj has played all five games. He seems to raise his game in Bumrah's absence. 'When Booms is not there you need to set the tone as a new ball bowler or the first change bowler or a guy who's played, you know, more than 30, 40 Tests, so I think he just enjoys that opportunity when it's given to him and he said it yesterday, I think in an interview, he just loves playing for India and putting the shirt on and performing.' Morkel said the team management had a 'conversation' with Siraj to find his mindset ahead of the fifth Test. 'Before the start of the Test, there was conversation with him just to check in how he was feeling mentally and how he was feeling physically because of the amount of overs but he was the first guy to say, 'listen, I want to play this Test match, I want to win it for the team, so not just the bowling front but it's the attitude for me that is great 'You've got a guy with an attitude like that and he's willing to run all day, I'm not surprised, that's why he's got the numbers,' said Morkel. On where the game stands, he added: 'The series so far, there have been moments like that where it's sort of up and down and we finally managed to break the partnership which was great and was important for us and it's almost like it's always, you feel for the new batter. 'It's quite tough to start, no matter what. It was looking quite flat out there and we managed to get a bit of something on the ball, which is great for the series so far and unfortunately, yeah, the rain came in and we had to come back tomorrow,' he signed off. Injured Woakes may bat on day 5 ======================== After scoring his 39th Test hundred, Joe Root said it was fitting that the series was going into day five just like the previous four games on this tour. 'It was always going to happen like this wasn't it? I mean, look at the first four games. It's just been that kind of series. It's been amazing to play in and quite fitting that we're going to get that kind of finish tomorrow,' said Root, hoping the heavy roller helps his team on Monday. Talking about the timing of stumps on day four, he said: 'There's pros and cons of both, really. Their guys had bowled a lot, there were overs in their legs. You get back out there, get a couple of boundaries away and all of a sudden the game looks very different again. 'But then again, you come back tomorrow, you get another roller, you can rest up and it's a completely new opportunity. I think for both teams there's pros and cons.' Will Woakes, who was ruled out of the game due to a shoulder injury on day one, come out to bat if needed? 'You probably saw him in his whites in the dressing room, so, you know, he's all in like the rest of us. It's been that kind of series where guys (like Rishabh Pant) have had to put bodies on the line and hopefully it doesn't get to that. He had some throw-downs in here at one point and he's ready if needed,' added Root. Root, who has negated some of the best bowlers of this era, heaped praise on Siraj. 'He's a character. He's a warrior, a real warrior. He's someone that you want in your team. He gives everything for India and it's credit to him for that the way he approaches cricket. He's got this fake anger about him sometimes, which I can see straight through. You can tell that he's actually a really nice lad,' he said. The former England skipper also lauded Prasidh Krishna with whom he had a run-in in the first innings of this Test. 'Prasidh is a proven performer, he is a brilliant player. You don't play for India as a seamer without having a huge amount of talent and clearly he's gonna do great things in the game. 'It wasn't anything between the two of us that sort of brought that on, that was more frustration on my part for not getting us over the line,' he added.

England has scored 339 runs with five wickets down in aiming for the target of 374 runs set by India. England is 35 runs away from victory on the fifth day. India is four wickets away from victory. Why was Day 4 interrupted? Umpire interrupted play on the fourth day due to rain. Jamie Smith was in the middle after scoring two runs, and Jamie Overton has not yet opened his account. For India, three wickets have been lost to Prasidh Krishna and two wickets to Siraj. What happened on Day 4? On the fourth day of the match, India dismissed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in the morning session. Duckett scored 54 runs off 83 balls before getting dismissed. Siraj dismissed Ollie Pope after he scored 27 runs off 34 balls. Harry Brook scored 111 runs off 98 balls before he was dismissed by Akash Deep. Brook put up a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket with Root. Jacob Bethell managed to score only 5 runs off 31 balls. Joe Root scored 105 runs off 152 balls before getting dismissed. Brook, Root hit tons, India still left with some hope
Kolkata: The wheels seemed to be coming off when Akash Deep tried stopping Harry Brook's drive with his feet and ended up kicking into the ropes for a four. A ball later, Brook raced to a hundred that should have been curtailed at 19 but for Mohammed Siraj stepping on the ropes after catching him at long leg. Unimaginative as well, considering spin was held back till the 43rd over, and when it did come into effect there were no close-in fielders to press home the message that India meant business. Brook had scented blood by then. He smashed a 91-ball hundred, his 10th in Tests, added a swift 195 for the fourth wicket with Joe Root, who then scored his 39th Test hundred and was all set for glory. Till Jacob Bethel chopped Prasidh Krishna onto his stumps. Two overs later, Root was sent back by Krishna, this time by a back of the length ball that he tried to steer on his back foot but ended up guiding to the outstretched hands of Dhruv Jurel. England were coasting but India were still not ready to throw in the towel. That and the timely intervention of the fickle English weather meant the fifth and final Test at the Oval would head to a fifth day with the hosts needing 35 runs and India four wickets. Not three as anticipated because even though Chris Woakes was seen walking around in a shoulder sling, there have been suggestions that he might just do a Malcolm Marshall and bat one-handed should things come to a head for England. It certainly didn't seem so during the post-lunch session when England added 153 runs at well over five runs per over but such has been the cyclical nature of this riveting Test series that India had to bounce back at some time. When they did, runs dried up for England. In the brief post-tea session, England faced 10.2 overs, lost two wickets and scored only 22. At stumps, Jamie Overton — he has a Test fifty and a first-class hundred — and Jamie Smith, who has already scored a hundred this series, at Birmingham, together. And even though 35 runs may not look much on the board considering this England team is used to overhauling big scores, India will be well rested Monday morning and the second new ball will be due in 22 balls. An hour of cricket and who knows how this Test might transpire if India catch an early break or two. It might be too much to expect with too little to defend but miracles have been conjured in the past with fewer runs in the bank. That said, India can't be absolved of the way they lost the plot despite getting two early wickets. The start was as usual promising with Siraj, the only fast bowler from either side to play all the five Tests of the series, bowling probing lines. So meticulously was he getting the ball to leave Ben Duckett, clearly England's most dangerous batter in this series, from over the wicket that his dismissal was waiting to happen. That came when Prasidh got Duckett to poke the ball to KL Rahul at slip. Ollie Pope is always a nervous starter but the boundaries he got early into his innings suggested that he was probably primed to play a captain's knock this time. Siraj dashed that hope with a wobble-seam delivery that pitched on good length and nipped in to trap Pope leg-before. Pope reviewed it but Hawk-Eye suggested it was hitting middle of middle, giving Siraj his 20th wicket of the series and sending him clear of the rest of the pack. In came Brook and then came that dropped catch. Fortune favours the brave though. And Brook was valiant this time, gearing up to a pace of scoring so maverick that it started toying with India's psyche. The same over he was dropped, Brook scored two more boundaries to rub salt in Prasidh's wounds. A desperate slash flew through slip and gully for a streaky boundary but Brook didn't care as he raced fifty off 39 balls. Wary of his batting approach, Shubman Gill started spreading the field, prompting Brook to drop the ball close and start taking easy singles. If anything was too short, Brook would pick the midwicket area, but otherwise England's scoreboard kept ticking because of the singles and twos conceded by a hapless India. Root was the ideal anchor during this time, playing chanceless cricket, milking the gaps and taking the occasional boundaries. The 100-run partnership came in 108 balls before Root got to his fifty in 81 balls. Akash Deep was a dud with the old ball, allowing Root to slowly accelerate. Once Brook was dismissed, he took over, hit consecutive boundaries to reach 98 before tucking Akash towards long leg for two runs and completing a memorable hundred in front of his family. It should have been smooth sailing for England from there. But India still had one last fight left in them for the day.
