Unfortunate Exoplanet Being Dragged by Star at Unfathomable Speed
A tiny star is making big moves — whether its accomplice likes it or not.
Astronomers have spotted a star just a fraction the mass of the Sun crashing through the Milky Way at an unbelievable pace. And astonishingly, it's managed to drag its exoplanet along, as the poor world hangs on for dear life.
As detailed in a new study published in The Astronomical Journal, the host star is absolutely hauling it at at least 1.2 million miles per hour, making it the fastest-moving exoplanet system discovered to date, according to NASA.
"We think this is a so-called super-Neptune world orbiting a low-mass star at a distance that would lie between the orbits of Venus and Earth if it were in our solar system," study lead author Sean Terry, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a NASA statement. "If so, it will be the first planet ever found orbiting a hypervelocity star."
Of course, speed is relative. To us, the Sun is stationary. But with reference to the Milky Way, our solar system is orbiting around the galactic center at an average velocity of 450,000 miles per hour. And the Earth, relative to the Sun, moves at around 67,000 miles per hour.
Our perspective of the hyperspeed star, then, may be a little skewed. In reality, it could be traveling much faster than it appears, if it's moving towards or away from our planet. That opens the possibility that the star is actually whipping around at 1.3 million miles per hour — fast enough to break free from the Milky Way, making it a potential "rogue star" doomed to roam the intergalactic void.
Spotting the star and its exoplanet is a remarkable discovery. Because they have no luminosity of their own, exoplanets are often outshined by stars, if not entirely lost to the lightless realm of space.
Both objects were first spotted back in 2011 using microlensing, a technique that searches for distortions of light caused by the gravity of nearby objects. If the conditions are right, even the mass of just a star or a planet could be enough to bend light like a natural lens, providing a better view of what lies behind it.
At the time, the findings were enough to determine the mass ratio between the two objects, with one being 2,300 times heavier than the other. But there wasn't enough data to rule out the possibility that the pair comprised a rogue planet — that is, one that's broken from from its star system — four times the mass of Jupiter, and its moon.
But when looking at data collected in 2021, astronomers found a candidate system that strongly resembled the one detected a decade ago, located in a star-dense region of the Milky Way roughly 24,000 light years away. The fact that they could even see it in the first place strongly suggests that they're on the trail of an escaping tiny star, not a huge planet.
As promising as the findings are so far, there's still some additional detective work needed to put this case to bed.
"To be certain the newly identified star is part of the system that caused the 2011 signal, we'd like to look again in another year and see if it moves the right amount and in the right direction to confirm it came from the point where we detected the signal," coauthor David Bennett, a senior research scientist at NASA Goddard, said in the statement.

Not all full moons are created equal, and a great example of this is June's full moon, which you can check out this week. Also known as the strawberry moon, June's full moon will be one of the more interesting full moons of the year. It's a mini-moon, which means the moon is as far away from the Earth as its orbit will allow. Your best chance to see the strawberry moon will be early on June 11, with the fullest possible moon not visible until 3:46 a.m. according to The Farmer's Almanac. It'll be only slightly less full on both June 10 and June 12. Since it is a mini-moon, it'll also appear to be smaller and dimmer than a normal full moon. Anyone who caught one of four supermoons in 2024 will be able to spot the stark contrast between a supermoon and a mini-moon. During a supermoon, the moon is as close to the Earth as its orbit allows, a phenomenon known as perigee. For a mini-moon, the moon is as far away from Earth as it can get, a phenomenon called apogee. It's a little less exciting than a supermoon, but for context, it's neat to know how dim and small the moon can get compared to how big and bright it can get during a supermoon. The major lunar standstill The strawberry moon is part of what's called a major lunar standstill. This occurs once every 18.6 years when the moon's orbit aligns just right with the Earth's tilt. As most astronomers can tell you, the moon rises and sets from different points of the horizon based on the time of year, the Earth's tilt, and the moon's orbit. In short, the path the moon is taking through the sky is as long as it's going to get. This phenomenon isn't specific to June 2025. In fact, people will be able to view this phenomenon for most of the year. However, once it's gone, it'll be 18.6 years before it shows up again. Another interesting tidbit about major lunar standstills is that the moon will be rising and setting on parts of the horizon where the sun will never go. This was noted by researchers at English Heritage, who are currently studying the notion that Stonehenge lines up with this once-in-a-generation event.

Astronomers have smashed the record for the largest-known cloud of energetic particles discovered surrounding a galactic cluster—and the find could shake up established physics. The cluster in question, which has the catchy name of "PLCK G287.0+32.9," lies some 5 billion light-years from Earth. The cloud around it is nearly a whopping 20 million light-years across—about 20 times the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy—beating the previous record holder, seen around cluster Abell 2255, which spanned only 16.3 million light-years. PLCK G287.0+32.9 was first spotted in 2011, with studies revealing that the cluster's edges were lit up by two giant shockwaves. The study was led by astronomer Kamlesh Rajpurohit of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "We expected a bright pair of relics at the cluster's edges, which would have matched prior observations, but instead we found the whole cluster glowing in radio light," Rajpurohit said in a statement. She added: "A cloud of energetic particles this large has never been observed in this galaxy cluster or any other." In addition, when the team peered deep into the cluster's central region, they also detected a radio halo some 11.4 million light-years across—the first of this size seen at the 2.4 gigahertz frequency, at which such large halos are not normally visible. Wolk "Very extended radio hales are mostly only visible at lower frequencies because the electrons that produce them have lost energy—they're old and have cooled over time," explained Rajpurohit. "With the discovery of this enormous halo, we are now seeing radio emission extending all the way between the giant shocks and beyond, filling the entire cluster. "That suggests something is actively accelerating or reaccelerating the electrons, but none of the usual suspects apply. "We think that giant shockwaves or turbulence could be responsible, but we need more theoretical models to find a definitive answer." In the cluster's center, the team explained, this activity could be the result of the merger of two smaller galactic clusters, outbursts from a supermassive black hole, or both combined. Here's what to know about June's full moon. The full Strawberry Moon will make its appearance on Wednesday, June 11, and will reach peak illumination at 3:44 a.m. EDT, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. June's full moon is called the Strawberry Moon as many ripening berries were ready to be harvested around this time in the northeastern United States, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The Strawberry Moon is also known as the Birth Moon, Hot Moon, Blooming Moon, and the Green Corn Moon. The strawberry moon is the most colorful of the year because it takes a low, shallow path across the sky, said Bob Bonadurer, director of the Milwaukee Public Museum's planetarium, according to reporting by USA TODAY. The June full moon's arc across the sky means moonlight must travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which can give it a colorful tint. While there's a chance for showers and thunderstorms for both the Rochester and White Plains areas earlier in the day Tuesday, skies should clear up by nightfall in Rochester, according to the National Weather Service. For the best viewing conditions of the celestial spectacle, travel away from bright city lights and find a nice, dark place to sky gaze. At the end of the month, you may be able to see Mercury for several nights if you have a clear view of the western horizon, according to NASA. Between June 21-30, look low in the sky around 30-45 minutes after sunset to try and catch a glimpse of the planet.
