2025 store closures: Joann and JCPenney join Macy's, Kohl's
JCPenney and Joann will shutter stores this year. They are joining Macy's and Kohl's which have announced plans to close stores in recent months.
The closure of every Joann store in the nation is upsetting for most fabric and craft shoppers, but especially those with gift cards.
When announcing that every location would shutter, the U.S. retailer said gift cards will no longer be accepted at any store. The policy has outraged customers who are now unable to ever use their cards despite going-out-of-business sales expected to continue in the months ahead.
In a March 3 Instagram post encouraging customers to shop before all the stores close, one customer commented that they were upset at the chain for cutting off gift cards with little notification.
"I just want you to know how incredibly upsetting it is that you cut off our ability to use gift cards," another user commented. "Regardless of the fact that you are closing, your business took money and now refuses to give the product in exchange for it. Wrong."
Another shopper wrote on X that they missed their chance use their card and have hence wasted $40.
Gift card owners in Maine are particularly upset due to a state law that prohibits the expiration of gift certificates stating "a period of limitation may not be imposed on the owner's right to redeem the gift obligation."
USA TODAY has reached out to Joann's for comment on the gift card expiration and the outrage.
Why are Joann's closing?
Joann's announced the closure of every store last month after previously only stating only around 500 of its 800 U.S. locations would shutter.
The mass closures comes after the Hudson, Ohio-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time within a year and auctioned its remaining assets. On Feb. 22, retail liquidator GA Group and Joann's term lenders won the bidding for the company.
"JOANN leadership, our Board, advisors and legal partners made every possible effort to pursue a more favorable outcome that would keep the company in business," according to a company statement. "We are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact on all our stakeholders."
When is Joann's last day?
Joann's announced that going-out-of-business sales commenced on Saturday, Feb. 15, though the closure of every store is expected to last for months.
"Only inventory available on-site at those stores will be part of the closing sales," the company said in a news release.

L'Oréal acquires majority stake in popular British skincare brand

Aging is a privilege, but I work really hard to make sure that my skin doesn't show off that privilege. I spend an absurd amount of money on skincare products. But it's just a tiny contribution toward the $26 billion in sales projected this year for the skincare industry. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter I have my favorites among the legacy brands sold in drugstores and department stores, but I'm often swayed by newer brands I see on Instagram. Every day, I scroll through a parade of serums, creams, and more that promise to firm, lift, tighten, and moisturize my skin. I click "buy" more than I care to admit, especially if there's scientific evidence that it works (and even if the science goes over my head). The ever-growing popularity of #SkinTok has prompted some legacy brands to work a bit harder to stand out among the sea of skincare competitors, especially when it comes to capturing the attention of Gen Z, which craves clean beauty products. Related: Ulta Beauty issues stern warning as consumers switch gears According to a report by Revieve, an AI-powered beauty and wellness tech company, 56% of Gen Z want fragrance-free beauty, and 33% want to ditch the parabens. Vegan beauty and skincare options? Yes, please. Legacy skincare is listening. One of my all-time favorite brands just made a major move to ensure that the younger generation is "worth it" by increasing its portfolio of science-backed skincare. Legacy beauty brand L'Oréal (LRLCY) has announced that it signed an agreement for the acquisition of a majority stake in Medik8, a British skincare brand. The deal was for an undisclosed sum, although reports suggest the deal is valued at around $1.1 billion. European mid-market private equity firm Inflexion will stay on as a minority stakeholder. Medik8 sales were in the ballpark of $70 to $80 million in 2024, as reported by Business of Fashion, even without a presence in Sephora or Ulta. The brand will be joining the Luxe Division at L'Oréal, which currently houses premium skincare brands including Kiehl's, Youth to the People, and Aesop. "We are delighted to welcome Medik8 to the L'Oréal family. As a premium skincare range, with high levels of proven efficacy at an accessible price point, Medik8 perfectly complements our existing skincare portfolio," said L'Oréal Luxe President Cyril Chapuy in a statement. "We share a strong belief in Medik8's global potential and are excited to embark on this journey together, to build a powerful and impactful brand presence worldwide," he added. Related: Drunk Elephant beauty brand suffers sales drop amid big shakeup Medik8, founded by scientist Elliot Isaacs, is backed by scientific research and innovation. Its premium skincare products include the best-selling Crystal Retinal Serum and its Liquid Peptides Advanced MP Face Serum (the latter was currently sold out on the Medik8 site at the time of this writing). Nearly all its products are developed and manufactured in the ISO-certified Innovation Center just outside of London. Certain generations need no introduction to L'Oréal. The famous L'Oréal Paris tagline "Because you're worth it" likely echoes in many Boomers', Gen Xers', and Millennials' brains. But Gen Z? Unless it's on Instagram or #SkinTok, where products are being hawked by favorite celebrities and influencers with a direct link to buy, even legacy cosmetic brands can find themselves lost amid a sea of products. That's where science-backed Medik8 comes in. Aside from getting the nod by dermatologists and beauty editors, celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Rosie Huntingon-Whiteley are known to use Medik8 products as part of their skincare routines - specifically, the Medik8's R-Retinoate Cream. Cosmetics - she is a Medik8 fan. And she has over 55 million followers on Instagram and nearly 16 million on TikTok, many of whom are likely eager to replicate her glowing complexion. It's worth noting that Bieber's social media stats alone eclipse the follower counts of both L'Oréal and Medik8 many times over. "This is an exciting day for Medik8," said Medik8 CEO Simon Coble. "I am delighted to be joining forces with a company which shares our vision for the brand's future growth and whose core values align with our deep commitment to science, innovation and above all, results without compromise. I look forward to the next stage in Medik8's journey, as we work together to bring our innovative products to a wider audience." L'Oréal's acquisition of Medik8 will likely be completed in the next few months, pending regulatory approvals and other conditions. Jetstar Asia closure: Some customers confused, frustrated by poor communication; Taiwan earthquake: 5.9-magnitude offshore quake rattles Taiwan: Singapore live news

The Jetstar Asia closure has left some customers confused and frustrated over conflicting information, or a lack thereof. The Singapore-based airlines, operated by Qantas Group, announced on Wednesday (11 June) morning that it would be ceasing operations from 31 July. They added that Jetstar Asia flights would be operating with a "progressively reduced schedule". For a customer identified as Daniel, he told CNA that he didn't realise the schedule would be "progressively reduced" prior to its closure. Taiwan was struck by an earthquake on Wednesday (11 June) evening, with the quake hitting seconds after cell phone alarms went off at 7.01pm. The quake about 71 kilometres south of Hualien City. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and was detected at a depth of 31.1 kilometres. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration gave the magnitude as 6.4. Hence, he thought his two planned trips in July – one to Bangkok, another to Okinawa - would not be affected. On Wednesday morning, though, he received an email confirming that his trip to Bangkok was cancelled, so he made plans to book another flight. Daniel said the email also included his "specific booking reference". Yet, when his friend called the Jetstar Asia's hotline, they were told the flight was still going ahead as planned. He now feels uncertain about his flight to Okinawa and it's not clear which flights would be cut from Jetstar Asia's schedule before it closes. 'I'm wondering, when would they tell me about it? Or how late would they tell me about it?' For more on how customers are affected by the Jetstar Asia closure, read here.
