15 years on, MKU contract workers waiting for regularisation of jobs in TN
According to sources, 386 non-teaching staff are working in the university as Casual Labour (CLR) and Consolidated Pay Casual Labour (CPCLR). Of this, CPCLR workers are paid Rs 7,500 -Rs 12,500 and CLR workers are paid Rs 500 per day for average 22 days of work in a month. The employees work in various positions, including drivers, assistants, gardeners etc.
Speaking to TNIE, MKU CPCLR association president M Savariguru said a total of 214 CPCLRs and 172 CLRs have been working for a long time nursing hopes of permanent jobs.
"Of the 386 workers, more than 50% are degree holders. Earlier, without any prior notice, the then Vice Chancellor J Kumar removed 135 CPCLR and CLRs from service. We are afraid this may be repeated again," he said.
He further stated that the DMK in its election manifesto had assured to regularise the contract workers, and requested Chief Minister MK Stalin to take steps to regularise the workers.
Speaking to TNIE, Madurai Kamaraj University SC/ST Employees Welfare Association president C Muniyandi said " There are 429 SC/ST vacancies in various positions. MKU has not filled vacancies for more than ten years.
More than 120 CPCLRs and CLRs are eligible under this category. In 2020, the syndicate gave approval to absorb CPCLRs and CLRs, but till now efforts have not been taken," he said.
An MKU official, requesting anonymity, said the process to recruit non-teaching staff would be initiated soon and the demand of CPCLRs, CLRs would be considered at that time.

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 9 (ANI): DRDO is looking to build a next-generation BrahMos missile, which will be a lighter, smaller version of the current version, the organisation's Chairman and Department of Defence Secretary (R&D) Samir V Kamat said on Saturday. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will be able to fit into any platform, unlike the current missile, which can only be used with the Sukhoi aircraft, the DRDO chief added. 'We are looking at BrahMos-NG, which is a smaller version of BrahMos, which can then be fitted on all our other platforms. Today, BrahMos can only be fitted on the Sukhoi platform, but if we can make it smaller, we can fit it on all our platforms. We are planning to start it soon," he at a press conference in Pune on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat also highlighted the pivotal role of indigenous technologies, including the BrahMos missile and Akashteer air defence system, in Operation Sindoor.'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system," he added. Kamat further mentioned how the Akashteer network helped in identifying any threats coming towards India, and also in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman while also expressing pride over the growing strength of India's defence research and development sector, Kamat mentioned, 'It's indeed a proud moment for all of us. It's a reflection of the strength of our R&D and production in the defence domain. I'm sure going ahead, this number will keep increasing."Earlier, it was reported that the annual defence production has achieved a record high of Rs 1,50,590 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore. South Odisha Development Council will be formed soon, says CM Majhi
BHUBANESWAR/JEYPORE: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced that the South Odisha Development Council (SODC) will be formed by the state government soon. Releasing the third installment of Rs 5000 each to one crore beneficiaries under the Subhadra scheme at a function at Jeypore in Koraput district, the chief minister said that a task force headed by school and mass education minister Nityanand Gond had been set up by the state government to suggest how to proceed in this regard. Stating that the task force will submit its report soon, the chief minister said the SODC will be in line with the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC). Majhi said that the government is committed to the development of the southern region of the state unlike the previous dispensation. Responding to the demand of Congress MLA from Jeypore, Taraprasad Bahinipati, the chief minister announced that a Vande Bharat Express will run from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar. He further announced that the paper mill at Gaganapur in the district which closed down will be revived by the government. Besides, a new college will also be set up at Jeypore, he added. The chief minister laid foundation stones for 436 projects worth over Rs 452 crore and inaugurated 126 other projects worth over Rs 309 crore during the occasion. These include important infrastructure development projects in the education, health, roads and tourism sectors. The chief minister said that with the implementation of these projects, the development of the district would be further accelerated.

Shah visit to set BJP's narrative for 2026 polls
Guwahati: Union home minister Amit Shah will visit Assam on Aug 29 to formally launch BJP's political narrative for the upcoming assembly elections, due early next year. The party is eyeing a third straight term amid a shifting regional political landscape. Adding weight to Shah's ideological kick-off to poll campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam 10 days later, on Sept 8, with a development-heavy itinerary, criss-crossing districts. Shah's visit includes the inauguration of the newly constructed Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, followed by a keynote speech at the Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan.
