Chee Hong Tat hopes to follow in Dr Ng Eng Hen's footsteps in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, where he wants to serve residents until he retires.
The Minister for Transport and incumbent MP for the GRC was speaking at the People's Action Party's (PAP) rally for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC on Wednesday (April 30).
Chee began his speech at Bishan Stadium by thanking Dr Ng, who served as MP in the Toa Payoh Central division from 2001 to 2025.
Dr Ng had also recently announced his retirement from politics.
"I am very grateful to Dr Ng for his mentorship since I joined politics 10 years ago in 2015," Chee said, adding that he was honoured to take over as the anchor minister for the GRC.
Chee added that like Dr Ng, he hopes to campaign with the future PAP team, attend their rally and give a speech in support of them.
Chee said the GRC saw improved accessibility and transport connectivity along with estate upgrades over the past five years.
He also spoke about the completion of the Toa Payoh Integrated Development by 2030, which will include a regional sports centre, polyclinic, public library and town park.
Chee drew cheers when he also said he would "help the residents of Bishan fight for a hawker centre".
He said that residents told him there were several hawker centres in Toa Payoh, but none in Bishan.
"I don't make empty promises. If I say I will do something, I will make sure I do it for you," he said.
Saktiandi Supaat, who has worked alongside Chee in the GRC since 2015, spoke about the infrastructure upgrades around the neighbourhood.
The 51-year-old said the MANGO portal he launched after the last election granted over $1.1 million in aid to residents.
Newcomer Cai Yinzhou, a social entrepreneur, said that he will champion for inter-generational projects for seniors to continue learning and greater support for caregivers from vulnerable families.
Elysa Chen, another new candidate, extended her gratitude to her predecessor Chong Kee Hiong, who stepped down after 10 years of service.
She also spoke about future estate upgrades and extending support to middle-income families.
In her speech, Marymount SMC's PAP candidate Gan Siow Huang noted the changes in Marymount SMC over the past five years, including new bus routes, food rescue programmes and TCM massages for residents.
The former army-general recalled receiving a bag of sweets and a bottle of medicated oil during the election campaign.

Also speaking at the rally was Dr Ng Eng Hen, who said that elections are "both complicated and simple" with every political party telling voters different things.
However, Dr Ng believed that each General Election boiled down to whom voters trust more.
"Trust is not built on promises," he said. "Trust needs to be earned, tried and tested through good times and bad times."
Dr Ng, who is also Defence Minister, then listed the PAP's contributions to Singapore the past 60 years, including the establishment of the Singapore Armed Forces and managing Covid-19.
He also expressed confidence in Chee, saying he "needs no introduction neither my endorsement".
"These proven MPs are MPs you can trust," he added.
Chee and his team will face the Singapore People's Party in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, where the PAP won with 67.23 per cent of the vote in 2020.
Gan will defend Marymount SMC against Jeffrey Khoo of the Progress Singapore Party. She secured the SMC with 55.04 per cent of votes in the previous election.

At the mosque's reopening on June 7 - Hari Raya Haji - Associate Professor Faishal noted that the Muslim community had put up with inconveniences during the two-year renovation, which included having to conduct their religious rites at a temporary site. Agreeing, Nee Soon GRC MP Syed Harun Alhabsyi, who was also at the event, said the upgrading involved a lot of logistics, as well as support from the Singapore Land Authority and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis). Prof Faishal said: 'This is the pride of Nee Soon residents, whereby with the strong community spirit, with the right support from grassroots organisations and government agencies, I think we can achieve better,' he said. Darul Makmur mosque was first opened in 1987. After it closed in April 2023 for upgrading, the former North View Secondary School in Yishun Ring Road was designated as a temporary prayer site for congregants. The completion of upgrading works means the mosque can now accommodate 4,000 worshippers, up from 3,000 previously. Barrier-free access with ramps, as well as a new lift, were also added. Speaking to the media after Hari Raja Aidiladha prayers, Prof Faishal urged the Malay/Muslim community here to continue to feel blessed in Singapore, where there is harmony and they can perform their religious rites with peace of mind anywhere in the country. 'This is something not available in many parts of the world,' said Prof Faishal, who was an MP in Nee Soon from 2011 to 2025. He was fielded in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC at the recent general election, which the PAP retained in a walkover. Echoing a sermon delivered earlier by Mufti Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, he also urged the community to have the notion of gratitude, and to continue playing its part in Singapore's quest to develop as a nation. As part of Singapore's humanitarian efforts for Gaza, more than 10 tonnes of korban meat will be channeled to Palestinians there, said Prof Faishal. Meanwhile, the meat that will be sent to Singapore will be distributed to the less privileged in the community, including zakat beneficiaries, families of incarcerated individuals and migrant transient workers. Korban refers to the Islamic ritual of slaughtering farm animals such as sheep and lambs, followed by the distribution of the meat to worshippers and the needy. Prof Faishal noted that this year's Hari Raya Haji korban had 5,700 orders for overseas livestock on SalamSG, a platform for key mosque programmes. This is about a 20 per cent increase from 2024. Teo Chee Hean to succeed Lim Boon Heng as Temasek chairman from October
Temasek Holdings announced on 6 June that former Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean will assume the role of chairman on 9 October 2025, following the conclusion of its third-quarter board meeting. He will first join Temasek's board of directors as deputy chairman on 1 July, according to a press release issued by the state investment firm. Teo will be Temasek's fifth chairman. His appointment follows his retirement from politics in April this year. He did not stand for re-election during the most recent General Election. Temasek highlighted Teo's experience over 53 years in public service, including military and ministerial appointments, and noted his involvement in policymaking on issues such as national security, digital governance, and climate change. Teo, 70, began his public service career in the Republic of Singapore Navy, rising to become Chief of Navy before entering politics in 1992. He first contested in Marine Parade GRC and later represented Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC in Parliament until his retirement. In Cabinet, he held portfolios in defence, education, home affairs, and the environment. Between 2009 and 2019, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and subsequently as Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security until stepping down. During Lim's chairmanship, Temasek's net portfolio value rose from S$223 billion (US$174 billion) in 2014 to S$389 billion (US$303 billion) in the latest financial year. The company also expanded its global presence, with close to half of its 13 offices now located in Europe and the United States. Exposure to developed markets doubled over this period. Temasek credited Lim with placing emphasis on leadership renewal and internationalisation, and for guiding the firm through a significant leadership change in 2021 when Dilhan Pillay succeeded Ho Ching as CEO. Under Lim's leadership, Temasek also launched initiatives such as the Ecosperity conference and Tripartite Conversations, which aim to advance sustainability and collaboration across its investment ecosystem. Temasek further acknowledged his role in shaping its T2030 strategy in 2019, a 10-year roadmap to build a resilient portfolio. Reflecting on his term, Lim said he was privileged to work with a team focused on long-term value and purpose. He welcomed Teo's appointment, noting the value of his experience in guiding Temasek through evolving global conditions. Lim remains the chairman of NTUC Enterprise Co-operative Limited. Former Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean will join Temasek Holdings as its deputy chairman on July 1 and succeed Lim Boon Heng as chairman on Oct 9, the Ministry of Finance and Temasek announced on Friday (June 6). In response to his appointment, Teo said he is looking forward to "build on the achievements of Temasek and chart a path for its continued success in the new global environment". "As a key Singapore institution with a global investment footprint, Temasek understands that its long-term success requires both addressing today's risks and opportunities and anticipating tomorrow's trends," he added. Teo's appointment in Temasek comes after he retired from politics following the General Election in May. Before helming the role of Senior Minister in 2019, Teo served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2009 and Coordinating Minister for National Security from 2011 till his retirement. Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, Temasek Executive Director and CEO, said: "I'm pleased to welcome Mr Teo Chee Hean as our fifth remarkable public service career across multiple domains speaks for itself," adding that Temasek can benefit from Teo's perspectives and extensive experiences.
