46 people were killed, and 167 others were rescued from mounds of rubble after a massive cloudburst led to flashfloods in Chositi in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Thursday. Flash floods tore through the densely populated foothill hamlet, damaging several homes and even forcing authorities to halt the annual yatra to the Machail Mata shrine. Kishtwar, Aug 14 (ANI): Rescue operations are underway after a flash flood at the Chashoti area following a cloud burst, in Kishtwar on Thursday. (ANI Video Grab) The disaster marks the second major flood-related tragedy in India this month. The cloudburst struck around 12 noon to 1pm. Officials received news of the calamity around 11:30 am, after which SDRF, rescue teams were deployed at the site. Indian Army, Navy, Air Force teams were also activated, said Jammu's Divisional Commissioner. Viral videos of the cloudburst captured torrents of muddy water, silt, and debris racing down the steep slopes, obliterating everything in their path. Houses crumpled like a pack of cards, while boulders crashed down, blocking roads and hampering rescue efforts. The once lush green landscape was left smothered in a bleak brown-grey. Omar Abdullah shared helpline numbers as the death toll from the cloudburst continued to rise. The August 15 'at home' tea party at the CM's residence, and other cultural events in the Union Territory planned for Independence Day, have been cancelled in the light of the tragedy. The formal events - speech, march past, will however, go ahead as planned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences stating that 'every possible assistance will be provided to those in need'. 37 people, mostly pilgrims, die in Kishtwar cloudburst, 100 injured: Officials
JAMMU: Torrential rain struck a remote Himalayan mountain village in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Thursday, killing at least 37 people and injuring many more, officials said. People move through the debris after a massive cloudburst at Chasoti village, in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, Thursday, Aug. 14 (PTI) The disaster, reportedly triggered by a cloudburst, took place in Chasoti village by the banks of Chishoti Nullah (a rivulet), a stopover point on a popular pilgrimage route to Mata Machail temple in Padder area. The pilgrimage began on July 25, and over 130,000 pilgrims have already paid obeisance at the shrine. A police officer said a cloudburst in Chishoti Nullah triggered massive flash floods around noon on Thursday. 'The deluge hit a community kitchen set up for the pilgrims where 100 to 150 pilgrims were having food,' the officer said. A cloudburst, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, is a sudden downpour of over 100 mm of rain in just one hour, which can trigger floods, landslides, and devastation, especially in mountainous regions during the monsoon. Kishtwar district commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma said 37 people have died so far and over a 100 are injured. There are chances of more dead bodies being found, he said. Inspector General of Police Jammu zone BS Tuti said most of the victims were pilgrims and the casualty figures were exoected to rise. The injured were rushed to the sub-district hospital at Atholi, many were shifted to the district hospital in Kishtwar 80km away. Apart from the community kitchen, three-four houses located close to the rivulet were also swept away. Much of the Chishoti village is safe since it is located at some distance from the rivulet and is on a slope. Personnel of the Indian Army, Border Security Force, State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed. A Gulabgarh resident, Deepak Singh said the situation was 'very grim'. 'About 150 pilgrims had taken shelter in the Langar when a cloudburst hit the area,' he said. He said the CISF had set up a picket near the community kitchen, which was also swept away in the torrent of water and debris along with vehicles which were parked. Chasoti village was the last motorable village on the way to the shrine.

Himachal Sees Cloudbursts, Flash Floods; 8 Bridges Damaged, Roads Blocked
Three cloudbursts and flash floods, two landslides and one drowning incident were reported in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, resulting in damage to eight bridges and 12 vehicles and blocking of multiple roads, including a national highway, the State Emergency Operation Centre said here. The natural calamities were reported in Shimla, Sirmaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Kinnaur districts. Fortunately, no human casualty was reported, though one person is missing, who is suspected to have drowned in the Parvati River in Kullu district. Braving darkness, fast currents and unstable terrain, the Indian Army, in its swift response, averted a potential tragedy when a sudden flash flood struck Hojis Lungpa Nala in mountainous Kinnaur. The incident happened at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Triggered by a cloudburst in the higher reaches of the Rishi Dogri Valley, the deluge engulfed the bridge across the Sutlej River and injured one individual. The site was an active road construction zone under the CPWD towards Gangthang Bralam, it said. On receiving an urgent request from the Superintendent of Police, the Army immediately mobilised a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) column. Braving fast currents, the team reached the location and discovered four civilians stranded on the far bank. Working with precision under challenging conditions, the HADR team illuminated the general area to aid night rescue operations. They also guided the stranded civilians to higher and safer ground and evacuated the injured individual to the Regional Hospital in Reckong Peo, the district headquarters. The Indian Army deployed its new generation equipment to assist in the operation, which included the logistics drone high altitude (LDHA) system to ferry essential items, including eatables, coconut water, across the floodwaters to help sustain the stranded individuals through the night. Elsewhere, a flood in the Changreji rivulet in Tashigang in Kinnaur damaged irrigation channels and pipelines. A cloudburst occurred in the Nanti Ganvi area in Rampur Upper Shimla, prompting the evacuation of people. Several sheds and a house were damaged. The collapse of a bridge cut off access to multiple villages and three gram panchayats. Additionally, a landslide at Khaltunala in Kotkhai, also in the Shimla district, damaged parked vehicles. In Kullu district, incidents included a drowning case at Chowki in Manikaran, a cloudburst in Bthad that swept away cottages and vehicles, and a flash flood at Kurpan Khad in Bagipul with no major losses reported, said the State Emergency Operation Centre. Lahaul-Spiti saw flash floods near Jahalman, a cloudburst at Munni Nallah, blocked roads and damaged a bridge abutment. Floods at Khurik have blocked the National Highway 505. A landslide in Rajgarh in Sirmaur district was reported that killed four cattle, damaged a cowshed, and swept away a parked car. The government said all these calamities resulted in the damage of eight bridges, multiple roads blocked, 12 vehicles damaged, six cow sheds and four cottages destroyed. Restoration and damage assessment efforts are ongoing across affected areas, it added.
