Cam Ward has answer for anyone who thinks he quit on Miami after breaking TD record in bowl game
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — While Cam Ward hasn't decided if he will throw at the NFL combine next week, the quarterback knows how he will answer any scouts or team personnel who ask him if he quit on the Miami Hurricanes team by not finishing his final game with them.
'Okay, you're either going to draft me or you're not,' Ward said Monday night before receiving the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top college quarterback. 'If you don't draft me, that's your fault. You've got to remember you're the same team that's got to play me for the rest of my career, and I'll remember that.'
Ward was showered with online criticism suggesting that he quit on the Hurricanes after he didn't play the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl in December, a 42-41 loss to Iowa State. He broke the NCAA Division I record for career touchdown passes before halftime.
The quarterback, who could be the first player taken in the NFL draft in April, said the decision not to play in the second half of that bowl game was predetermined by he and the entire coaching staff.
'I just think we all got what we needed out of it. They seen things that they think they need to work on ... for this season coming up. And they also knew, you know, what I had on the line,' Ward said. 'We feel like we're doing what's best for the program and myself. I mean, it was a hard decision, especially when, you know, some guys on our team didn't play who I thought should have played. It was also, you know, those guys thought about their future the same way I thought about mine.'
Miami coach Mario Cristobal has defended Ward, and last month called the accusations of him quitting on the team 'a false narrative.'
'If I could do it again, I'd do it the same way,' Ward said Monday, though he later added, 'I wish we could have ended up winning the game. If we had won the game, they wouldn't have said nothing. And so that's usually how it goes. And, you know, you just got to take it on the chin and just keep pushing.'
With the first of his three TD passes in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, when he threw for 190 yards to push Miami to a 31-28 halftime lead, Ward broke the Division I — FBS and FCS — record at 156 touchdowns, one more than Houston's Case Keenum (2007-11). Miami used Emory Williams at quarterback in the second half, and has since added former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck as a transfer.
Ward finished his college career with 158 TD passes and his 18,189 passing yards — 6,908 at Incarnate Word, 6,968 at Washington State and 4,313 at Miami — is third-most in NCAA history behind only Case Keenum and Dillon Gabriel. In his lone season with Miami, Ward set single-season school record for yards, completions (305), touchdown passes (39) and completion percentage — both for a season and a career, at 67.2%.
As for the upcoming combine, Ward said he hadn't come up with a plan of what he would do next week in Indianapolis. He does plan to throw at Miami's pro day.
The O'Brien Award ceremony came about three weeks after Ward accepted the Manning Award. He followed Jayden Daniels, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner who also won both of those quarterback awards before being the second overall draft pick last year and then leading Washington the NFC Championship Game..
'To see him succeed," Ward said, 'is motivating for not only myself but all of the other quarterbacks.'

Due to being an offensive position that can do it all, Kittle believes the NFL does not pay the position what it should get. "The only way for the tight end market to continue to grow is if everybody's getting paid," Kittle told The Dan Patrick Show on Monday. "That's the only way to do it. You can't just have one guy do it and then it just sits for four years because then you're stuck and it's stagnant and no one's getting paid. We want everybody, I want everybody to have great seasons. I want everybody to have great games, just not against the 49ers. Throughout the rest of the season, they can play as well as they want to because I want guys to get paid, to keep bumping up that market so by the time that Brock Bowers is doing his contract in three years, he's going for over $20 million, which he will. That's just the whole point." Kittle also delves into Tigh End University, which was started by Kittle, Kelce and Greg Olsen to help educate and elevate the position. The belief is that the three-day program can lead to a much more evolved player. "When Tight End U started, I think the top of the market was 15 (million dollars), and now we're almost at 20," he said. "So we're continually growing it. As a tight end and as a position who does everything, yeah, I think we should be making more money, but we're working on it," Kittle added. Right now, Kittle is making $19.1 million per season, which is the top of the position. Arizona Cardinals' Trey McBride is second with $19 million per season. Below that is Kelce, who makes $17.125 million per season. Kittle has a point that the tight end position has evolved to include catching, blocking, and so much more. If receivers are making $20 million per season and more, then a position that is responsible for that and blocking should theoretically make more. Christian McCaffrey hopes longer offseason leads to better health in 2025 for 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The biggest beneficiary of an extended offseason for the San Francisco 49ers just might have been star running back Christian McCaffrey. A year after he was limited to just four games because of injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee, the engine of San Francisco's high-powered offense was on the practice field for the offseason program and is hoping to get back to the form that made him AP Offensive Player of the Year during a run to the Super Bowl in the 2023 season. A healthy McCaffrey would be a key component for San Francisco to rebound from a 6-11 season that at least provided a side benefit of more time off in the winter following three straight years of long playoff runs. 'Being fully transparent, obviously last year didn't go the way I wanted,' McCaffrey said. 'It didn't go the way anyone wanted. But having this time off has allowed me to start from scratch and have the time where I can build a base again, come into OTAs, play football and now get back into it mentally, emotionally, physically in all ways. It was much needed and I'm happy we had it.' McCaffrey plans to spend the long break before training camp starts in late July staying in shape and becoming a father. McCaffrey and his wife, model Olivia Culpo, are expecting their first child 'right around the corner.' McCaffrey looked fresh during the offseason program after sitting it out last year as he recovered from a grueling season and waited for a new contract that came last June. McCaffrey had 798 touches from scrimmage in 2023-24 in the regular season and playoffs — more than 100 more than any other player in the league during that span. That workload likely contributed to the Achilles tendinitis that sidelined McCaffrey early in training camp last season and forced him to miss the first eight games of the season. He then injured his posterior cruciate ligament in his fourth game back and missed the final five games of the season. With McCaffrey on the sideline, an offense that was the most dangerous in the league following his arrival midway through the 2022 season took a step back last season as the Niners struggled overall. Coach Kyle Shanahan said he is aware that he needs to manage McCaffrey's workload this summer in order 'to protect him from himself' and make sure he's healthy and fresh when the games count. 'He is a psycho in a good way and so like he does everything imaginable every single day,' Shanahan said. 'Last year he couldn't because he was battling injury all last year. And this year he is healthy so he is right back to being who he is always been and it's really fun to watch.' McCaffrey, who turned 29 earlier this month, said the key as he ages is finding the 'middle ground' of doing the intense work to get ready for a season and making sure he doesn't wear down early. But once he's on the field, he knows only one speed. 'My job is to put my body in the best position it can to go out there and be me,' he said. 'There's a lot of noise and sometimes there's a lot of things going on. My job is to go 100% every play and continue to get better. I just try to focus on that.' ___ AP NFL:
