Can Hubble still hang? How the space telescope compares to its successors after 35 years of cosmic adventures

This Thursday (April 24), the Hubble Space Telescope celebrates 35 years in space — and even though Hubble has continuously delivered stunning space images and vital data since 1990, it isn't unfair to ask whether the instrument can still deliver goods with the same level of quality. Thirty-five years of age for a space telescope is no joke.
So, can Hubble still hold its own and prove itself useful when compared to other, more recently built space instruments like NASA's $10 billion golden goose, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)?
Well, as it appears, the answer is yes.
Kurt Retherford is a Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) scientist who argues that Hubble can still hold its own. For instance, he recently used the long-serving space telescope as part of a program to study the solar system's most volcanic body" Jupiter's moon Io."It's amazing that after 35 years, Hubble still holds a unique capability as a top workhorse for science discoveries and publications," Retherford told Space.com. "The requested time amongst scientists to use this facility remains several times higher than the time being competed for, meaning only the best of the best ideas for observations are conducted."
Of course, when talking about space telescopes and their usefulness, we have to mention the $10 billion elephant in the room: the JWST. Why do we still need Hubble with the JWST out there? The answer concerns the way these two revolutionary instruments use the electromagnetic spectrum to see the cosmos."Hubble is different than JWST in that it is great at imaging both the visible light that we see with our eyes and light at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, even shorter and more energetic than the light that gives us sunburns," Retherford said. "JWST, on the other hand, is optimized to detect infrared light, even at thermal temperatures that are even redder than night-vision goggles use. Both are big telescopes, but they are very different in these ways."
As Retherford pointed out, in terms of the wavelengths of light these two telescopes are optimized to observe, the JWST in fact picks up where Hubble leaves off. That means that the observations conducted with these two space telescopes are highly complementary, especially when studying transient cosmic phenomena that change in wavelength over time — that includes the solar system's planets and their moons.
University of Oulu researcher Mélina Poulain was recently part of a team of astronomers that used Hubble to study around 80 dwarf galaxies, with the loyal space telescope making the first ever detection of star clusters colliding at the hearts of these diminutive and faint galaxies.
"Hubble's field of view and spatial resolution allow for a very detailed study of plenty different astronomical sources from planets to galaxies, including those with very low surface brightness objects like dwarf galaxies," Poulain told Space.com. "It can also observe blue and near-UV wavelengths, which has become a rare feature."
Poulain also suggested that even though Hubble may one day be surpassed by other telescopes like the JWST and the European Space Agency's Euclid spacecraft, there is another key aspect keeping Hubble relevant: familiarity. "Hubble is an easy choice, as people do know what to expect from Hubble observations and how to handle them. JWST is still at the beginning of its operational lifetime," Poulain said. "Moreover, I feel like there is an extremely high demand, and thus high competition, for getting observation time currently."
When it comes to the future for Hubble, however, the emphasis is very much on synergy with the JWST and other telescopes both in space and planted on terra firma."Why do the JWST and Hubble make such a good team?" Poulain pondered. "They both have a similar field of view and spatial resolution, and they are complementary in terms of filters used: Hubble offers a view in the optical, while the JWST observes in near-infrared and infrared bands."
Currently set to launch by May 2027, NASA's next major space observatory project is the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Roman has been designed to complement the high resolution and sensitivity of the JWST, thus building on the success of that telescope and Hubble.
While Roman may muscle Hubble out a bit by forming a more synergistic partnership with the JWST, plenty of observatories would still benefit from a team-up adventure with Hubble.
The long-serving space telescope could be particularly useful when collaborating with future ground-based observatories, including the Vera Rubin Observatory on Cerro Pachón in Chile, which is currently nearing completion.First light for Rubin is expected later this year when the observatory will begin conducting the decade-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
"While Hubble and JWST are designed to provide exquisite spatial resolution of targets along a tight, pencil-beam type line of sight, the Rubin Observatory will scan the sky in fields of view a few times larger than the full moon, night after night, detecting all sorts of new things," Retherford said. "I'm very excited about all of the objects discovered by Rubin that Hubble and JWST will be able to then go and image and survey in UV and infrared wavelengths in more detail, respectively."
Poulain added that while Rubin won't be able to resolve features as small as those determined by space telescopes, it will offer deep observations in specific optical features. This will allow for stellar population studies through a process called Spectral Energy Distribution mapping."It will also add a time variable so we can search for object variability over time, which is a good tool to identify some astronomical sources such as supernovae or supermassive black hole-powered active galactic nuclei," Poulain said.

"I couldn't be more excited for future Hubble findings," Retherford explained. "I hope Hubble keeps working until our Europa Clipper and JUICE [Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer] missions to Jupiter's moons arrive and operate in the 2030 to 2036 timeframe so that we can coordinate observations.
"For sure, I'll continue to use Hubble and have no shortage of good ideas to propose."The biggest threat to the future of Hubble doesn't come from other space telescopes like the JWST and Rubin, but rather from an internal challenge that jeopardizes those missions too. "Unfortunately, the funding situation for NASA science projects is looking dire in the next few years, and the US likely won't have enough funds for scientists like myself to take full advantage of our national treasures like Hubble, JWST, and the fleet of planetary and heliophysics missions already operating and partially built," Retherford concluded. "Much less likely is a new start for the next big observatory to come after JWST, the Habitable Worlds Observatory, which is more of a true replacement for Hubble's UV and visible light capabilities."Let's hope Hubble can hang on until its true replacement and NASA's next big mission after Roman, the Habitable Worlds Observatory, can get off the ground, or maybe until its 40th birthday in 2030?

Japan's ispace counts down to second moon-landing attempt on Friday
By Kantaro Komiya TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese startup ispace aims to become the first non-U.S. company to achieve a controlled moon landing as it prepares for the touchdown of its second uncrewed spacecraft on Friday, two years after its inaugural mission ended in failure. Tokyo-based ispace hopes to join U.S. firms Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace, which have accomplished commercial landings since last year amid an intensifying global race for the moon that includes state-run missions from China and India. The mission also highlights broad public- and private-sector expectations from Japan, which remains committed to lunar exploration as part of NASA's Artemis moon program, despite mounting uncertainty about its future as President Donald Trump reshapes U.S. space policies. "A moon landing is not a dream but it has become a reality," ispace CEO Takeshi Hakamada has said. The company's first lunar lander in April 2023 crashed onto the moon's surface due to a software issue that incorrectly assessed its altitude during descent over precipitous terrain. Its second lander, named Resilience, in January shared a SpaceX rocket launch with Firefly's Blue Ghost lander. Blue Ghost took a faster trajectory to the moon and touched down successfully in March. Currently circling about 100 km (62 miles) above the lunar surface, Resilience carries a rover built by ispace's Luxembourg subsidiary and payloads worth a total of $16 million, including scientific instruments from Japanese firms and a Taiwanese university. After Friday's landing on Mare Frigoris, a lunar sea relatively close to the moon's north pole, scheduled for 4:17 a.m. Japan time (1917 GMT, Thursday), the 2.3-metre-high lander and the microwave-sized rover are tasked to capture images of regolith, the moon's fine-grained surface material. If successful, ispace said it will transfer the ownership of the collected material to NASA to fulfil what it says would be the world's first commercial transaction of lunar resources. According to a 2020 NASA statement, ispace's Japan and Luxembourg units would each receive $5,000 under this arrangement. NASA was not immediately able to comment on the impact of the Trump administration's proposed budget reductions on the contract. An ispace spokesperson declined to comment. JAPAN'S LUNAR ENTHUSIASM The company envisions establishing a lunar colony of 1,000 inhabitants by the 2040s, tapping the moon's water resources. It plans seven more missions in the U.S. and Japan through 2029, including a NASA-sponsored one as part of the Artemis program, to capitalize on increasing demands for lunar transportation. About a dozen corporate partners have provided support for ispace missions, including titanium materials from Citizen Watch and design expertise from automaker Suzuki. In Japan, a wide range of businesses from construction firms to carmakers engage in lunar exploration research, and the breadth of industrial interest in the moon may surpass that in the United States, said Atsushi Uchida, Research Director at Mitsubishi Research Institute. The government has been keen to promote Japan's roles in the Artemis program, signing an agreement with NASA last year to include two Japanese astronauts and a Toyota-built rover in forthcoming missions to the lunar surface. Exploration of the moon and Mars is one of the key objectives of Japan's newly-established multibillion-dollar space venture fund. "Having ispace, a domestic transportation option, is a huge advantage for Japanese businesses and universities that foray into lunar exploration using government funds," said Ritsumeikan University professor Kazuto Saiki, who participated in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) SLIM mission that achieved Japan's first lunar landing last year. JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa said last month that he was rooting for ispace's re-attempt because their "success will attract attention to the whole Japanese space industry." Investors are keen. Shares in ispace, which made a blistering market debut in 2023 but languished after the landing failure, have risen about 60% year-to-date, epitomising a space startup boom in the Japanese capital market.

Marc Garneau, 1st Canadian astronaut in space, dead at age 76
Former astronaut and cabinet minister Marc Garneau has died. He was 76. A statement from his wife, Pam Garneau, says he passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his family. "Marc faced his final days with the same strength, clarity and grace that defined his life," the statement says. She says the family is grateful for the outpouring of support, concern and kind words received over the past few days and also asks for privacy "as we grieve this profound loss and take time to reflect and heal." Pulled NASA nomination blindsides space community: ‘Major blunder'
The aerospace community was caught off-guard this week by President Trump's withdrawal of tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman's NASA nomination. Announced days before the Senate's likely confirmation of Isaacman, the withdrawal sparked a swirl of rumors and concerns, as budget cuts loom and NASA stretches into its sixth month without a leader. Trump, in a social media post over the weekend, offered few details but said his decision was made after a 'thorough review of prior associations.' One space policy executive called the reasoning 'complete bull—-.' 'That's like the worst excuse in the world,' said the executive, who was granted anonymity to speak freely about withdrawal. Isaacman's nomination had already advanced through the Senate Commerce Committee in a 19-9 vote and was expected to hit the full floor this week. When reached for comment Wednesday, he told The Hill he is 'grateful' for the support from the space community. The White House also did not offer specifics, stirring further frustration. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt briefly addressed the decision in a briefing Tuesday, telling reporters Trump 'wants to ensure all of his nominees are aligned fully with the America first mission of this administration.' 'I was frankly gobsmacked,' Mark Whittington, an author who studies space, politics and policy, told The Hill. 'Jared Isaacman is well-regarded by just about everybody.' Rumors quickly circulated over the weekend that the decision might have something to do with Isaacman's ally, Elon Musk, who stepped down from his role leading Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last week. Two sources close to the White House suggested Isaacman's ties to Musk may have also contributed to his removal as the pick to lead NASA. Musk, the sources said, rubbed many people in the administration the wrong way. And with his official departure from government, Isaacman lost a strong ally in the White House. 'Now six months of hard work later, just days short of a confirmation vote, and it's all thrown away because he bought two flights to space from Elon Musk? Are you f—ing kidding me?' said one Republican space policy expert. 'It looks like the Waste, Fraud and Abuse Caucus was bigger than we thought.' Isaacman acknowledged the timing of the decision this week, telling the 'All In' podcast he received a phone call Friday informing him the president decided to 'go in a different direction.' Friday marked Musk's last day as a special government employee leading DOGE for the White House. 'It was a real bummer,' Isaacman said, adding, 'It was certainly disappointing. But the president needs to have his person that he counts on to fulfill the agenda.' 'I'm not…play[ing] dumb on this. I had a pretty good idea,' he added. 'I don't think the timing was much of a coincidence that there were other changes going on the same day and it was obviously a little bit of a disappointment.' Isaacman sidestepped questions over whether his nomination withdrawal was a 'shot at Elon,' telling the 'All In' podcast that people 'can draw their own conclusions but I think the direction people are thinking on this seems to check out to me.' Isaacman has given to Democrats during recent campaign cycles, including Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a retired astronaut. But also donated to a few Republicans. A White House official pointed The Hill to Isaacman's donations in recent years to PACs linked to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), along with the hundreds of thousands of dollars he donated to other Democratic campaigns since 2010. But various space observers emphasized that reports of these donations first circulated in January. Six months later, they are frustrated the donations are abruptly being used against the tech entrepreneur. 'It was well-known that, like a lot of businessmen, he [Isaacman] donated to both parties and that came up in the vetting process…I'm sure that Trump knows about it or he should have known about,' Whittington told The Hill. 'All of a sudden, six months later, he says, 'I'm shocked, shocked' that Jared Isaacman gave money to Democrats,' he added. Isaacman echoed this, stating his donations were 'not a new development,' and described himself as a moderate who is 'right-leaning' and supportive of Trump's agenda. The space industry now anxiously awaits a new nominee; no name has emerged as a clear frontrunner. The need to pass the 'Trump loyalty test' could eliminate several good candidates, the first space policy executive suggested. 'I know you got to have partisan people in a lot of these agencies but for space, the community is generally bipartisan and more scientific or technical,' they told The Hill. The process to push a new nominee through the Senate could take months, stoking alarm among observers over the steep potential NASA budget cuts. Under Trump's proposed 2026 budget, NASA's funding would be cut by nearly 25 percent in what would be the largest single-year cut at the agency. Musk expressed concerns over proposed funding cuts to NASA in April but said he could not participate in those conversations as SpaceX is a major federal contractor. Space observers are concerned the cuts will pass through Congress with little opposition. 'When the budget needs to be mulled over and chewed over by Congress, they really need somebody at NASA to explain things to them,' Whittington explained. 'Otherwise, Congress is just going to do what it wants, and I think [it] really goes against the White House's interest if they want to control space policy. This is a major blunder, whatever way you look at it.' A spokesperson for NASA said the agency will 'continue to relentlessly pursue' Trump's America First agenda under acting administrator Janet Petro. 'The @NASA workforce is committed to serve and eagerly awaits President Trump's new nominee to head the agency, leading us toward our 'manifest destiny in the stars,'' NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens wrote on X. It comes amid an already tumultuous time at NASA as it faces workforce and infrastructure challenges as a result of both DOGE cuts and years-long budget declines. 'NASA lost its mojo, they don't know how to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems efficiently, they don't know how to put together the right teams to solve those problems, they lost the ability to do that,' said Charles Camarda, a retired NASA astronaut. Camarda, who recently released a book on NASA's culture challenges, explained NASA has lost its 'research culture' over the years as funding continues to be cut for applied research. 'Right now, we are technically drained. We don't have the expertise, and we're not raising new researchers and engineering researchers,' he said. Brett Samuels contributed reporting.
