Microsoft prepared to abandon high-stakes talks with OpenAI, FT reports
Microsoft is prepared to abandon its high-stakes negotiations with OpenAI over the future of its alliance, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.
The tech giant has considered pausing discussions with the ChatGPT maker if the two sides remain unable to agree on critical issues such as the size of Microsoft's future stake in OpenAI, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
The company plans to rely on its existing commercial contract to maintain access to OpenAI's technology until 2030, according to the FT report.
Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
OpenAI executives have considered accusing Microsoft of anticompetitive behavior in their deal, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, adding that both the companies are discussing revising the terms of Microsoft's investment, including the future equity stake it will hold in the AI startup.
Microsoft's multi-billion dollar investments into OpenAI has been a key factor in positioning it as a leading player in the artificial intelligence space.
OpenAI requires approval from Microsoft, its major backer, to complete its transition into a public-benefit corporation, which it believes will make it easier to raise more capital.

Air India cuts foreign widebody flights by 15% after crash
[NEW DELHI] Air India is reducing its international service using widebody planes by 15 per cent as the nation's flag carrier grapples with the fallout from a fatal Boeing 787 crash last week and an Israel-Iran clash in the Middle East. The cuts will be rolled out to Jun 20 and will continue until at least mid-July, the carrier said in a press release on Wednesday (Jun 18). The airline also said it would undertake one-time safety inspections across its Boeing 777 fleet as 'a matter of added precaution'. In its statement, Air India cited geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, night curfew in the airspaces of countries in Europe and East Asia and the ongoing enhanced safety inspections of its Boeing-built 787 fleet after Thursday's crash. Safety checks ordered by the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation have been completed on 26 of the 33 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets operated by Air India, clearing those planes to fly, the airline said. Inspections of the remaining planes will be completed in the coming days, it added. 'The curtailments are a painful measure to take, but are necessary following a devastating event which we are still working through and an unusual combination of external events,' Air India said. Investigators are still trying to determine why Air India flight AI-171 struggled to gain altitude after takeoff from the western Indian city of Ahmedabad before plunging into a densely populated neighbourhood seconds later, killing all but one of the 242 passengers and crew, as well as dozens more on the ground. Air India chairman N Chandrasekaran told a local TV channel that AI-171 had a clean flight record before the crash. 'There are speculations about human error, speculations about airlines, speculations about engines, maintenance, all kinds,' he said. 'This particular aircraft, this specific tail, AI-171 has a clean history.' 'Both engine histories are clean. Both pilots were exceptional,' he added. The plane's right engine had been installed in March 2025, he said. The left engine was last serviced in 2023 and due for its next maintenance check in December 2025, he added. Chandrasekaran said a preliminary report is expected from crash investigators in 30 days. He also acknowledged that the lack of information about the factors that may have led to the crash has stoked frustration and rumours. Apple eyes using AI to design its chips, technology executive says
SAN FRANCISCO :Apple is interested in tapping generative artificial intelligence to help speed up the design of the custom chips at the heart of its devices, its top hardware technology executive said in private remarks last month. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, made the remarks in a speech in Belgium, where he was receiving an award from Imec, an independent semiconductor research and development group that works closely with most of the world's biggest chipmakers. In the speech, a recording of which was reviewed by Reuters, Srouji outlined Apple's development of custom chips from the first A4 chip in an iPhone in 2010 to the most recent chips that power Mac desktop computers and the Vision Pro headset. He said one of the key lessons Apple learned was that it needed to use the most cutting-edge tools available to design its chips, including the latest chip design software from electronic design automation (EDA) firms. The two biggest players in that industry - Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys - have been racing to add artificial intelligence to their offerings. "EDA companies are super critical in supporting our chip design complexities," Srouji said in his remarks. "Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost." Srouji said another key lesson Apple learned in designing its own chips was to make big bets and not look back. When Apple transitioned its Mac computers - its oldest active product line - from Intel's chips to its own chips in 2020, it made no contingency plans in case the switch did not work. "Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us. There was no backup plan, no split-the lineup plan, so we went all in, including a monumental software effort," Srouji said.

The reductions won't exclusively affect sales teams, and the timing could still change, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss a private matter. The company declined to comment. The terminations would follow a previous round of layoffs in May that hit 6,000 people and fell hardest on product and engineering positions, largely sparing customer-facing roles like sales and marketing. In April, Microsoft told employees it planned to use third-party firms to handle more sales of software to small and mid-size customers. The tech giant has ramped up its investments in AI, aiming to solidify its leadership as companies across industries accelerate the integration of AI into their products and services to maintain a competitive edge.
