The new direct train would allow both Brits and Germans a flight-free way of getting to each country.
For Brits, this meant they could be exploring the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie "in just a matter of years", according to Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander.
The secretary added: "This landmark agreement – part of a new treaty the Prime Minister will sign with Chancellor Merz today - has the potential to fundamentally change how millions of people travel between our two countries, offering a faster, more convenient and significantly greener alternative to flying.
"A new task force will bring our nations closer together and create new opportunities for tourism, business and cultural exchange, building on a landmark deal we signed earlier this year to explore introducing direct services to Switzerland."
The plans are also set to give the UK a big economic boost, with the creation of jobs and strengthened trade links.
Alexander added: "This is central to our Plan for Change – breaking down barriers, thinking boldly about the future, and making long-term decisions that better connect Britain to the world.
"Working with Germany, we're building bridges between our people and paving the way for a more sustainable, connected future."
It has not been made clear where the new train service would depart from in London.
Currently, St Pancras International is the only London station that provides direct international passenger trains, including ones that connect to Germany - via a change in Brussels.
This is due to St Pancras being the terminus for High Speed 1 (HS1) - the only high-speed rail line in the UK that connects to the Channel Tunnel.

Berlin is known for its vibrant culture and top class beer, which includes Prater Garten, the city's oldest beer garden having first opened in 1837.
Currently, St Pancras International is the only London station that provides direct international passenger train services, including those that connect (via a change in Brussels) to Germany.
This is because St Pancras is the final station for High Speed 1 (HS1) - the only high-speed rail line in the UK that connects to the Channel Tunnel on the UK side.
However, Stratford International and Ebbsfleet International stations both sit on the HS1 line.
In theory, both of these places could handle international services.
However, the Eurostar - which is the main operator through the Channel Tunnel - has not served these stations since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eurostar has also announced plans to create direct trains from London to Frankfurt in Germany and Geneva in Switzerland in the early 2030s - which would still likely depart from St Pancras International.
A new high-speed line known as High Speed 2 (HS2) is under construction in the UK.
Whilst the line will primarily be used for travel within the UK, such as linking London to the West Midlands, there have been some discussions about a link between HS1 and HS2.
If this link were to be built, it could allow for direct international services from other parts of the UK via HS2.
New European rail service
A NEW European train service, launching next year, will connect Prague, Berlin, and Copenhagen, marking the first direct route between Prague and Copenhagen in a decade.
Operated by Czech, German, and Danish rail companies, the service will primarily run twice daily.
The journey from Prague to Copenhagen will take around 11hours - a duration expected to decrease with the completion of the Fehmarn Belt Undersea Tunnel.
Onboard, passengers can enjoy a dining car, a children's cinema, and improved mobile signal.
The ComfortJet trains will also offer space for bikes and be wheelchair accessible.
This initiative is one of 10 pilot projects supported by the European Commission to enhance cross-border rail travel.
The construction of HS2 is also behind schedule and the Government confirmed in June that the completion of the line would now be delayed beyond the target date of 2033.
Plus, a gamechanger new budget train line is to launch from London next year.

Direct trains from London to Berlin could run within a decade

Rail passengers will be able to travel directly from London to Berlin as a result of the first bilateral treaty between Britain and Germany. Under plans which ministers claim will 'fundamentally change how millions of people travel' the two governments are to set up a taskforce to agree border and security controls, and the technical aspect of the new service. The government hopes the rail link could be operational by the early 2030s. It would also link London with other German cities, such as Frankfurt. Eurostar has already said it hopes to launch direct services from London to Switzerland and Germany. London to Frankfurt is likely to take about five hours and London to Geneva is expected to take five hours and 20 minutes. Eurostar and other train operators had an eye on expanding the number of destinations served by the Channel Tunnel since the original service was launched in the 1990s. Plans were put on hold after Brexit because priority was given to sorting out the logistical issues of keeping the existing lines serving France, Belgium and the Netherlands running smoothly. The new taskforce will examine commercial and technical requirements, including safety standards, border arrangements and collaboration with rail operators. 'We're pioneering a new era of European rail connectivity and are determined to put Britain at the heart of a better-connected continent,' Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary, said. 'The Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie — in just a matter of years, rail passengers in the UK could be able to visit these iconic sights direct from the comfort of a train. 'This landmark agreement has the potential to fundamentally change how millions of people travel between our two countries.' The announcement was made during the first visit to the UK of Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor. He and Sir Keir Starmer signed a major bilateral agreement between the two countries setting out new co-operation in areas such as defence and illegal migration. At a joint press conference, Starmer said that the deal was 'evidence of the closeness of our relationship as it stands today' as well as a 'statement of intent, a statement of our ambition to work ever more closely together'. It includes plans to let UK travellers use German e-gates, defence procurement co-operation and a commitment from Germany to change the law so police can seize engines and inflatable boats used in illegal channel migration. Merz said that Britain, France and Germany were 'converging' on policy matters such as migration and security. He said: 'It is no coincidence that I happen to be here a week after the state visit of the French president to London, Emmanuel Macron. 'Great Britain, France and Germany are converging in their positions on foreign policy, on security policy, on migration policy, but also on economic policy issues.' During the press conference Starmer also revealed that the UK was in talks with the Trump administration to buy US weapons to send to Ukraine. Trump announced the initiative at a meeting with Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary general, two days ago, but Downing Street had not said whether the UK would participate.

He will visit Turnberry in Ayrshire and Menie in Aberdeenshire between July 25 and 29. "President Trump will travel to Scotland, where he will visit both Turnberry and Aberdeen, from July 25 to July 29," Ms Leavitt told journalists. "During the visit, President Trump will meet again with Prime Minister Starmer to refine the great trade deal that was brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom." The President will also return to the UK in September for his second state visit. Ahead of the visit, President Trump told the BBC that the north east of Scotland - the oil and gas capital of Europe - should "get rid of the windmills and bring back the oil". The US President has long been an opponent of wind farms, objecting to a development off the coast of Aberdeen which can be seen from his course. It has already been confirmed that Mr Trump will meet with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer while in Aberdeen. And plans are being put in place for the President to meet First Minister John Swinney, according to the Scottish Government. However, they refused to confirm where or when the meeting would take place. Karoline Leavitt gives Donald Trump health update after President suffered 'swelling on ankles & bruising on hands' A spokeswoman said: 'The Scottish Government has been working collaboratively on arrangements with partners, including Police Scotland on the visit of the President of the United States. 'There are plans for the First Minister to meet with the President when he is in Scotland. "It is important that the opportunity to promote the interests of Scotland is taken during this visit.' However, the decision from Mr Swinney sparked fury from the SNP's former coalition partners the Scottish Greens. Ross Greer, who is running for co-leadership, likened Mr Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu. STATE VISIT CONFIRMED IT comes as the dates for the US President's official state visit were confirmed. Mr Trump will be hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla from September 17 until September 19. A statement from The Royal Family said: "The President of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump, accompanied by the First Lady Mrs. Melania Trump, will be hosted by His Majesty The King for a State Visit to the United Kingdom from September 17 to September 19 2025." The President and the First Lady will be hosted at Windsor Castle during their visit. Trump will be the first US President to be offered a state visit during his second term in the White House. He was given the historic invitation by the PM during a visit to Washington. He said: 'I doubt the First Minister would meet with Putin or Netanyahu. 'What is the distinction between them and Trump other than economic power and how do we think history will judge those who tried to treat him like just another world leader?' Last week the White House rejected claims from Mr Greer that the President was a 'dangerous racist bully'. Mr Swinney sparked fury from Mr Trump after he said Americans should vote for Kamala Harris in last year's election. He was blasted by Mr Trump's businesses for the 'insult' and labelled 'appalling'. In December, the First Minister had a 'positive' phone call with the President after his election. And in March, Mr Swinney met Mr Trump's son, Eric Trump, in Bute House where they discussed the President's golf courses. 5 Mr Trump will be in Scotland from July 25 to July 29 Credit: Reuters

Extreme sports influencer falls 600ft to death into Italian Dolomites ravine crash

Extreme sports influencer Andreas Tonelli, 48, is believed to have crashed his mountain bike moments before he plummeted 600ft into a ravine in the Italian Dolomites An extreme sports influencer has died after tragically crashing his bike and plummeting 600ft into a ravine. Andreas Tonelli's family raised the alarm on Tuesday evening after he failed to return home from a ride in the Italian Dolomites, sparking a huge helicopter search at around 9pm. His body was found in a ravine in the Vallunga area of Val Gardena three hours later, and was recovered the following morning. Authorities believe he plummeted from the mountain into the ravine below after a bicycle accident. Tonelli, 48, had 127,000 followers on Instagram, where he regularly shared videos of his daring trips on his mountain bike. ‌ ‌ One recent video showed him perilously clambering across a rock face using a wire to pull himself across with his bicycle on his back. In 2014, he left what he described as his "boring office job" to become a full-time bike guide. ‌ He had been organising bike trips since 2003, including routes across Italy, throughout Europe, and eventually all over the world. Mr Tonelli was also known to be a keen photographer, hiker and climber, and had proudly spoken of his bicycle climb of the active volcano Nevado Ojos de Salado in Chile. Among his feats was the completion of the L'Onda di Hokusai ('Hokusai Wave'), a route in the Dolomites made up nearly entirely of frozen mountaintop, and a successful scaling of the Tupungato volcano in central Chile. ‌ The accident on Tuesday unfolded in the Vallunga area of the Italian Dolomites as he tackled a difficult section alone. Just moments before the fatal fall, he posted an Instagram story showing himself smiling at the summit. Andreas was born in the tiny village of Völs am Schlern, at the foot of the Schlern mountain. In a recent comment about his love for travelling, he wrote: "But since I spend seven months a year travelling, I also call home all the other places in the world where I feel happy and free." ‌ Tributes have flooded in from within the European mountain biking community, with many speaking of him as an inspirational figure in the sport Outdoor clothing manufacturer Norrona, who Mr Tonelli worked with as a brand ambassador, wrote on Facebook: "Andreas was a passionate, dedicated, and important voice within the Norrøna family. "We will remember his big smile and his deep love for mountain biking, for nature, and for the friendships forged out there. Not only did he take part in testing and developing new Norrøna products, Andreas also worked as a bike guide for Norrøna Adventure — sharing his passion for mountain biking with every guest he met. "He made a profound impression on everyone fortunate enough to meet him. Our heartfelt thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family and friends." One person commenting on the post described him "one of the most inspiring people in the hike and bike adventure scene", while another recalled meeting him on a trail in Norway and described him as a "good person".
