'Good teams win when they are up against it'

Justin Devenny says Northern Ireland's gritty 1-0 win over Iceland will give the team momentum heading into September's World Cup qualifiers. Isaac Price netted the opener in the first half but the game turned when Brodie Spencer was sent off for a last-man tackle with 33 minutes to ten men of Northern Ireland dug deep and ground out a win in their final friendly before they take on Luxembourg and Germany in was only the third time a Northern Ireland team have won a game with 10 players and the first time since the 1982 World Cup against Spain."I think good teams win when they're up against it or when they've got a man sent off," said Crystal Palace's Devenny, 21."We stuck together, which I think is key to this group. The togetherness is amazing. Everyone's there for each other."Everyone's going to go above and beyond for each other. It's great to have that within a squad and I think that's what brings us up to that next level."Devenny said that the 10 men of Northern Ireland "dug deep" and that will stand by Michael O'Neill's young team come the qualifiers."It might not have been the prettiest game, but we got the result which we wanted."On the park, everyone's there talking to each other, making sure everyone's doing their jobs. "That starts from Pierce all the way up to the striker. Everyone's good at that, to be fair."Northern Ireland start their qualifying campaign in September with trips to Luxembourg and Germany, and than face Slovakia in October's window."We have got the qualifiers coming up and we're all focused on that now but I think this was an important camp to get the group together, try and build momentum because we're going to have tough games."

Gordon Lyons: GAA should 'change' Casement plans, says DUP minister

The minister in charge of sport in Northern Ireland has said plans for a new Casement Park stadium in west Belfast may have to be scaled back due to the funding Minister Gordon Lyons said the £50m offered on Wednesday by the UK government still left a "significant gap".In a statement to BBC News NI, he put the onus on the GAA to find more money or "change their plans to fit the funding".The price-tag for the planned 34,500-capacity stadium is about £100m more than is currently available. The GAA president, Jarlath Burns, has welcomed the £50m offered by the government but revealed the cost of rebuilding the derelict stadium is now "well over £270m".Mr Burns told Irish state broadcaster RTÉ on Wednesday: "The cost goes up by about £140,000 every month if we don't do anything because of the rising cost of infrastructure and building. "Time literally is money here."The GAA president is looking to the Stormont executive to help plug the funding said: "The executive now have to meet, and it's between really the two government parties to decide how they are going to make up the deficit that still exists between Casement Park not being built - and Casement Park being built." The statement from Lyons put the focus on the GAA said: "Additional money coming to Northern Ireland for sport must be allocated on a fair and equitable basis, a principle first agreed as part of the 2011 executive agreement and one I remain firmly committed to in the interests of fairness to all."It will be up to the GAA to consider what additional contribution they are prepared to make or how they will change their plans to fit the funding that is available."I look forward to engaging with the representatives of the GAA, football and rugby." The funding currently available for the Casement Park redevelopment includes £15m from the GAA, about £43m from the Irish government and £62.5m from that the Stormont funding pledge is more than a decade old, there have been calls for inflation to be taken into account which would take the total close to £ Burns has asked Stormont to consider an "inflationary uplift".The football authorities in Northern Ireland will be watching closely what happens Irish Football Association has called for at least £50m to be given to the sport in line with the extra UK money pledged for the Casement Park executive Patrick Nelson said that "parity" between major sports is GAA want a modern Casement Park stadium capable of hosting Ulster finals, as well as being the home for Antrim county.

Shotts boss says 'having a go' worked well as they avoided Premier League drop

John McKeown's side were on a good run of form at the end of the season Shotts boss John McKeown reckons having a go in games worked well for them, and hopes his side continue that form into next season's West of Scotland Premier League. The Hannah Park side ended with 11 points from a possible 18 in their last six games, as they comfortably evaded the bottom three – though Clydebank winning their Lowland League play-off saved four teams from going down. ‌ Now that the dust has settled on their first season in the top flight, McKeown reckons they could have done things differently. ‌ 'We know what to expect, but you have to find your feet,' said McKeown. 'As a coaching and management team, I think we were a wee bit negative in the first half of the season. 'In the second half, we had a wee bit more of a go, and ended up doing quite well. In our last six games we won three, drew two and lost one, and that's good going in this league. 'Fair play to the boys, they deserve all the credit they're going to get, and hopefully they continue that form into next season.' Shotts watched Clydebank's play-off in sponsor's pub The Two Chimneys in Uddingston, and the Bankies' promotion to the Lowland League means McKeown can plan ahead. ‌ He said: 'I had two lists, and now I can concentrate on the Premier League one, rather than the Championship. 'That gives us a better chance to plan, going forward. 'This is our second season in the Premier League and I think that's for the first time in 30 years, or something like that. ‌ 'By hook or by crook, we've stayed there, so fair play to the boys. 'We have a team spirit that I don't think many clubs have, and I think that's what has kept us up.' Having lost Airdrie neighbours Gartcairn to relegation last season, due to a 15-point deduction, one particular fixture stands out to McKeown, who said: 'Glencairn are my local team, I was born in Rutherglen, so that's another wee derby.' ‌ Last week the club announced that a number of players have signed up again for the new season Taylor Evans, Josh Gracie and Paul Byrne have joined Ally Small, Rico De Marco and Jack Gordon in committing to the 2025/26 campaign. A number of players have also departed. Leaving the club are Andrew Duffy, Chris Meikle, Danny Burns and goalkeeper Sandy Thomson. Meanwhile, after getting a bye in the first round, Shotts were drawn against Irvine Victoria in round two of the WoSFL Cup. The date is to be arranged.
