Shotts boss says 'having a go' worked well as they avoided Premier League drop

Daily Record12-06-2025
John McKeown's side were on a good run of form at the end of the season
Shotts boss John McKeown reckons having a go in games worked well for them, and hopes his side continue that form into next season's West of Scotland Premier League.
The Hannah Park side ended with 11 points from a possible 18 in their last six games, as they comfortably evaded the bottom three – though Clydebank winning their Lowland League play-off saved four teams from going down.

Now that the dust has settled on their first season in the top flight, McKeown reckons they could have done things differently.

'We know what to expect, but you have to find your feet,' said McKeown.
'As a coaching and management team, I think we were a wee bit negative in the first half of the season.
'In the second half, we had a wee bit more of a go, and ended up doing quite well. In our last six games we won three, drew two and lost one, and that's good going in this league.
'Fair play to the boys, they deserve all the credit they're going to get, and hopefully they continue that form into next season.'
Shotts watched Clydebank's play-off in sponsor's pub The Two Chimneys in Uddingston, and the Bankies' promotion to the Lowland League means McKeown can plan ahead.

He said: 'I had two lists, and now I can concentrate on the Premier League one, rather than the Championship.
'That gives us a better chance to plan, going forward.
'This is our second season in the Premier League and I think that's for the first time in 30 years, or something like that.

'By hook or by crook, we've stayed there, so fair play to the boys.
'We have a team spirit that I don't think many clubs have, and I think that's what has kept us up.'
Having lost Airdrie neighbours Gartcairn to relegation last season, due to a 15-point deduction, one particular fixture stands out to McKeown, who said: 'Glencairn are my local team, I was born in Rutherglen, so that's another wee derby.'

Last week the club announced that a number of players have signed up again for the new season
Taylor Evans, Josh Gracie and Paul Byrne have joined Ally Small, Rico De Marco and Jack Gordon in committing to the 2025/26 campaign.
A number of players have also departed. Leaving the club are Andrew Duffy, Chris Meikle, Danny Burns and goalkeeper Sandy Thomson.
Meanwhile, after getting a bye in the first round, Shotts were drawn against Irvine Victoria in round two of the WoSFL Cup. The date is to be arranged.

Aston Villa given fitness boost for key man ahead of Premier League opener against Newcastle

Aston Villa are increasingly hopeful that Morgan Rogers will be fit for Saturday's Premier League opener against Newcastle. The forward, a contender for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, damaged his ankle in a pre-season friendly against Roma on August 6 and did not feature in the preparation games against Marseille and Villarreal. But Rogers has been involved in training this week and confidence is growing that he will be ready for the clash with Eddie Howe 's team at Villa Park. Rogers, 23, was one of the breakout stars of the last Premier League campaign, hitting double figures for goals and assists in all competitions, and breaking into the senior England squad. Aston Villa are hopeful Morgan Rogers will be fit for Saturday's Premier League opener against Newcastle He signed a new deal with Villa less than a year ago but his progress has been so rapid that the club are expected to offer him improved terms in the coming weeks, as first revealed by Daily Mail Sport on July 21. Villa have been relatively quiet in the market this summer, though they remain in talks to sell homegrown midfielder Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for about £40million, after Villa brought in Evann Guessand from Nice for about £28m to bolster their attack. Instead, the focus has been on securing the futures of their key players, with Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne signing new deals and others, including Youri Tielemans and John McGinn, expected to follow. Villa are also looking at a deal to bring back Marco Asensio, who spent the second half of last season at the club on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Wrexham SHATTER transfer record for £10m signing that has fans questioning Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham are set to break their transfer record with a £10m move for Ipswich's Nathan Broadhead, sparking fan debate over spending by the club's Hollywood owners Wrexham have been given the go ahead to smash their transfer record by completing a £10million deal for Nathan Broadhead. The Red Dragons have been chasing the signing of the Ipswich Town winger for the last few weeks. ‌ The 27-year-old Wales international was understood to be keen on making a return to the Welsh side, where he started his career in the club's youth academy. It was previously reported that a fee of £7.5m had been agreed. ‌ However, the move was held up by Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna due to a series of injuries plus transfer interest in other attacking players. That changed when the Tractor Boys completed the loan signing of Chuba Akpom from Ajax on Sunday. ‌ Championship new boys Wrexham have now been given the green light to complete the purchase of Broadhead after upping their offer to £10m, as per Sky Sports News. The player is believed to be on his way to his native home of North Wales to undergo a medical. Once finalised, Broadhead will become Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson 's ninth summer signing after receiving strong backing from the club's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. It will be the third time Wrexham have broken their transfer record this summer after initially forking out £2.1m for Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace. The acquisition of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien then surpassed that figure after costing around double that amount. The arrival of Broadhead will eclipse that again in what will be viewed as a statement of intent in many quarters. But some Wrexham fans aren't convinced and have questioned the hefty outlay by the owners at a time when the club still doesn't have a permanent training ground. Writing on X, one supporter said: "I really don't want to be negative here but it's been over 4 years since the take over and we've still not bought any land for a training ground. These signings are unbelievable but long term success will be slowed down if we continue to not have our own base." ‌ A second fan posted: "I'm going to be controversial here but that is ridiculous. Yes, he is Welsh and a former youth player but that can't justify that price. If we can't find a better striker for £10m then we need to look at our recruitment." A third added: "Not my money etc etc but £10m for Broadhead? Mmm okay." Meanwhile, another said: "I'm not sure I can be comfortable with us making a £10m signing." ‌ Broadhead joined Ipswich from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023. He played a key role in the Tractor Boys' back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, before being restricted to just seven Premier League starts last season as the club was relegated back down to the second tier. Broadhead has bagged 23 goals in 83 appearances for Ipswich, but recently entered the final year of his contract. He missed his club's Carabao Cup clash at Bromley on Tuesday after reporting in sick on the day of the game. His move to Wrexham comes as they prepare to take on West Brom in their first league home game of the season on Saturday. Parkinson's side lost their opening game away at Southampton 2-1 following a late collapse after being ahead for most of the match.
