Lancashire climb above Durham with tense three-wicket Vitality Blast victory

Leader Livea day ago
Durham started the day atop the group and elected to bat first but runs were hard to come by and they were just 46 for three when Alex Lees was caught and bowled by Chris Green.
Colin Ackermann top-scored with 42 as Durham limped to 155 from their 20 overs but they would have been happy to have England pair Phil Salt and Jos Buttler back in the shed early in the chase at 42 for two.
The game remained in the balance as Lancs continued to plug away at the runs but Durham in turn took wickets at regular intervals courtesy of Callum Parkinson, Matthew Potts, James Neesham and Nathan Sowter but Green's match-winning 31 from 16 balls gave Lancashire victory.
What a way to WIN it! 🤩

Surrey earned a resounding 67-run victory over Somerset in a battle of the top two in the South Group.
They were forced to bat by Somerset but put on a pleasing display in the first innings. Will Jacks scored a half-century and fellow English pair Jason Roy and Dan Lawrence posted above 30 to help Surrey to 201 which Somerset did not make a mark on, being bowled out for 134.
Northamptonshire climbed to second in the North Group with a comprehensive 64-run win over fellow quarter-final chasers Warwickshire.
Matthew Breetzke clubbed 85 from 40 balls while David Willey and Ricardo Vasconcelos both struck half-centuries as the Steelbacks put a mammoth 240 on the board the halfway point.
Warwickshire openers Alex Davies and Tom Latham tried to get on top of the run rate but both succumbed in doing so. Sam Hain hit a half-century but in the end they fell way short of their target.
Hampshire all but secured their place in the knockouts with a six-wicket victory over Sussex, who saw their own hopes take a huge blow.
After Sussex posted 167 on the board, the Hawks were completely dominant with the bat thanks largely to James Vince who came two runs short of a century but was unbeaten on 98 from 49 balls which saw Hampshire home with 16 balls to spare.
Kent boosted their hopes of a top-four finish with a seven-wicket win over Middlesex.
Middlesex would have been questioning their decision to bat after Kane Williamson fell in the eighth over at 43 for three but Leus Du Plooy's 68 propelled them to 160.
However, Kent were always in control in their run chase. Tawanda Muyeye's 59 alongside solid scores from Harry Finch (36) and Joe Denly (46) moved Kent to fourth in the South Group.

Ethan Brookes scored a half-century to help steer Worcestershire to a six-wicket victory over Leicestershire.
Leicestershire posted 173 at the end of their 20 overs, Tom Taylor ripped through Worcestershire's top order but the hosts fought back courtesy of Ben Cox's unbeaten 70 from 44 balls which helped them post a defendable target.
However, Worcestershire were imperious in their run chase and posted over 50 in their first six overs. Tom Scriven aimed to pull Leicestershire back in the contest with the wickets of Brett D'Oliveira and Kashif Ali but Brookes' unbeaten 56 took Worcestershire to a sixth win of the campaign.

Glamorgan's hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals took a blow after they suffered a 40-run loss to lowly Gloucestershire.
Ben Charlesworth's 55 from 44 balls propelled Gloucestershire to 175 but Glamorgan never got going with their run chase and were reduced to 95 for five after 11 overs.
Marchant de Lange's four wickets helped limit Glamorgan who were bowled out for 135 after just 18.1 overs.

Derbyshire claimed an eight-wicket victory over fellow Blast strugglers Yorkshire at Headingley.
The Falcons put the home side on the back foot from the off as Allah Ghazanfar and Ben Aitchison claimed two wickets apiece to reduce Yorkshire to 17 for four but Dom Bess' half-century helped his side up to 150.
The run chase was a formality for Derbyshire. Aneurin Donald and Wayne Madsen went past 50 while Caleb Jewell remained unbeaten on 41 to help them to a win.

Todd Boehly joins exclusive club of owners to be world champions in two sports as Chelsea win Club World Cup

The Blues earned their new title of world champs thanks to their dominant 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final on Sunday. That victory means that Chelsea are now the first club to have won every major trophy on offer for an English team, adding the Club World Cup to titles like the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. But their success has also done wonders for owner Todd Boehly, who is now one of just a handful sports team owners to have seen his teams be crowned world champions in multiple sports. Boehly is also a co-owner of Major League Baseball franchise the LA Dodgers, who won the 2024 World Series - meaning the 51-year-old American is now technically a two-time world champion. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL TONEY WOE England star Toney has car broken into and fumes 'this is why I hate London' He joins the exclusive club of owners to do so, including Arsenal's head honcho Stan Kroenke, who achieved the same feat with two of his US teams. Kroenke's NFL franchise the LA Rams, and his NHL team the Colorado Avalanche, won the Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup respectively in 2022 - both earning the title of world champions in their sports. Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, Kroenke is yet to deliver any big ticket trophies in North London despite Mikel Arteta's best efforts in the Premier League and Champions League in recent seasons. Boehly, who appeared to promise Chelsea would win the Champions League in 2026 following the game, has every right to feel smug after his much-criticized player trading model paid dividends for the first time. 6 Boehly is also a co-owner of the LA Dodgers Credit: AP 6 The Dodgers won the World Series in 2024 Credit: Reuters 6 Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke won the Super Bowl with the LA Rams in 2022 Credit: AFP CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Clearlake capital and Boehly have taken the brunt of league-wide fan anger since their takeover for splashing way in excess of £1BILLION on new signings. And although there was a general consensus that the bold method of stock-piling young talent on mammoth contracts and selling the deadwood was failing, the Blues' success in the US - coupled with their stellar performances - could change the way Boehly's methods are viewed. Cole Palmer and Chelsea celebrate in style as they arrive back at their hotel after Club World Cup victory However, the first challenge Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will face in continuing the club's success is managing the shortened break and hectic schedule on the horizon for the SW6 outfit. Chelsea will now have to settle for a shorter post-season break and smaller pre-season preparations than their Premier League rivals after going all the way in the Club World Cup.

Four ways England could replace Shoaib Bashir — and the one they should choose

One cannot say that Shoaib Bashir did not make his final involvement of England 's series against India a telling one. Nursing a broken pinkie finger on his non-bowling hand, the spinner had shown admirable bravery to play through the pain to deliver the match-winning moment; an innocuous off-spinner blocked inadvertently on to his stumps by Mohammed Siraj as a solitary bail's tame tumble brought an end to a slow-burn thriller of a Test match. And so ends Bashir's Test summer, with the 21-year-old ruled out of the remaining encounters at Old Trafford and The Oval. It is a shame for a bowler who needs as much cricket as he can get; currently unable to force his way into the Somerset side and seeking a new county contract next year yet first choice for his country, his is an odd situation. This England environment have backed Bashir to the hilt, and he may well have assurances that he will remain at the top of the pecking order come the Ashes this winter. But a sliding of doors will open a window of opportunity for another. This is far from a bad time to be presented with such a chance, with that upcoming trip to Australia upon which England will surely want a second specialist spinner to travel, plus a dry summer and turning track at Old Trafford to get the tweaking fingers twiddling. An updated squad will be confirmed for the Manchester Test in the coming days. Perhaps the favourite for a call-up might be Jack Leach given his existing familiarity with the group, and the fact that, in Pakistan last year, he was the man in possession of the second spinner slot when England required one. The left-armer keeps Bashir out of his county side and is, right now, a more rounded performer; the national side have banked on the younger, taller spinner's higher ceiling and been prepared to accept a lower floor. Leach – who thrived initially under the leadership of Ben Stokes – has a solid body of work at Test level. Also on that Pakistan trip was Rehan Ahmed, who featured in Rawalpindi as a third spin prong. Life can be tough for a leggie in Test cricket – recent success stories are vanishingly few and far between – but Ahmed sparkled on debut as an 18-year-old, and has not at all looked overawed in his infrequent outings at international level. He has endured something of a curious county season, though: Leicestershire have been an unexpected story of the summer with Ahmed prominent with bat, if not ball. His last first-class appearance against Glamorgan featured a blistering ton from No 3, but no overs. Full credit to Ahmed for carving out a role; former England Test wrist-spinners Matt Parkinson and Mason Crane have also been used as pinch blocking openers in the County Championship this year to follow in the footsteps of Sussex's Will Beer, who briefly flourished in a similar role in 2019. A more radical solution for England, mooted in these pages last week, might be to bring in Jacob Bethell to provide another part-time spin option and deepen the batting line-up. Such an idea was dismissed ahead of Lord's by Brendon McCullum – insisting that Bethell would be considered for selection if or when a spot in the top order opens up – but that came before a place appeared naturally. Bethell is clearly well liked by the England hierarchy; it would not come as a total shock if they found a way to fit him in, as they did in New Zealand after Jordan Cox's moment of misfortune. At Old Trafford in mid-summer, mind, such a selection would surely be indicative of a shift in strategy for contests ahead. Besides, if England did want a left-arm spin option to lengthen the batting order, a recall for Liam Dawson would make sense for several reasons. It is eight years since a cause celebre of the county cricketing public played the last of his three Tests. A recall to the white-ball sides, however, represented something of a rapprochement with a player perhaps picked initially too soon, then discarded too early amid a muddling of messages, and only now really coming fully back into the frame as a Test contender. Dawson has been among English cricket's most consistent spinners for the last few seasons while shouldering plenty of bowling and batting burden. Though not, perhaps, the sort of Test No 5 or 6 England would covet, at No 7 or, in its current construction, 8, he would feel a snug fit. This, in turn, could reduce England's reliance on developing a seam bowler who can bat – Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson have flashed in their short Test stints but Chris Woakes still feels a figure of importance given what he offers with the willow. Having Dawson in the side may provide greater tactical flexibility. His selection would also be a worthwhile exercise in emergency planning. Nobody particularly wants to consider a scenario in which Stokes does not play a full part over these next seven Tests but there were surely a few frets after the injury scare sustained by the skipper while batting late on day one. That he returned to strain every sinew with the ball said plenty about his character, and the shape the all-rounder has worked to get himself in, but his body has been pushed beyond breaking point before. While George Hill looks a player of promise at Yorkshire, a like-for-like replacement as a seam-bowling all-rounder within the county game is not readily apparent; Stokes is perhaps unique in being able to push 90mph and, when at his best with the bat, occupy a spot in the top six. A second look at Dawson, however, might be worthwhile future proofing for a nightmare scenario, the left-arm spinner perhaps sitting at No 7 in Stokes's absence and allowing Jamie Smith to push up a rung on a ladder plenty of sage voices within the game imagine he will continue to climb. Perhaps it is unwise to consider such hypotheticals, for Dawson presents a compelling case for selection regardless.
