Traditionally observed as a sacred time for rituals and divine offerings, Aadi has undeniably evolved into a high-octane shopping season over time, with retailers offering lucrative deals to keep consumer demand at a steady high during the month.
Retailers across Chennai, from T Nagar and Pondy Bazaar to Parry's Corner and Sowcarpet, tell us that they are expecting a 20– 30% surge in footfall compared to last year, driven by attractive offers, EMI options, and festivalexclusive combo deals.
'People may cut costs elsewhere, but not on gold'
'Lightweight and antique-style jewellery are in demand and popular, especially among young brides. This year, we've also introduced virtual try-ons and doorstep delivery for elderly customers. Sales are 18% higher than last year so far. The craze for gold during Aadi is emotional as much as financial — it's seen as an auspicious investment,' informs Akbar Ali, owner of a jewellery store in Parry's Corner.
'Aadi is like Deepavali for the home appliances business'
"Aadi is no longer just a cultural event; it's a full-fledged consumer festival.
For us, it's like Deepavali. People wait for this season to upgrade or replace home appliances. This year, discounts have gone up to 40%, and smart kitchen gadgets are trending big," states N Karthikeyan, sales manager at a home appliances store in T Nagar.
'We expect a 35% growth in sales this Aadi season'
"Aadi always brings in a wave of shoppers, but this year, we are expecting at least 35% more sales than in 2024. The season has begun well with strong demand for bridal saris, everyday cottons, and men's festive shirts.

There's been a clear uptick in young shoppers, especially working women who prefer readymade options. Even NRIs visiting India for July-August weddings are stopping by," says Ranendran Pillai, co-owner of a textile store in Sowcarpet.
What's hot this Aadi festive:
Electronics and appliances:
Air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, mixer grinders, robot vacuum cleaners and Android TVs are trending
Textiles:
Sarees, cotton kurtis , wedding silks, and readymade wear continue to dominate
Jewellery:
Lightweight gold, bridal sets, and festive bangles remain customer favourites
Consumer behaviour:
Customers, especially young couples and homemakers, are increasingly opting for no-cost EMIs, exchange offers, and combo packs

Sebi relaxes NRI trading norms in derivatives market
Markets regulator Sebi on Tuesday decided to abolish the mandatory requirement for NRIs to notify the names of clearing members or obtain a custodial participant (CP) code for trading in derivatives. ADVERTISEMENT Moreover, their position limits will be monitored at the client level, similar to domestic investors. The decision, based on the recommendation received from Brokers' Industry Standards Forum, is aimed at facilitating ease of doing investment to NRIs for trading in exchange traded derivatives contracts and bringing in operational efficiency. "It has been decided to do away with the mandatory requirement of NRIs having to notify the names of the clearing member/s and subsequent assignment of CP code to the NRIs by the exchange," Sebi said in its circular. For NRIs trading in exchange-traded derivative contracts without CP code, the exchange/clearing corporation would monitor the NRI position limits in the manner similar to the client-level position limits monitored by them, it added. Position limits for NRIs would be same as the client-level position limits specified by Sebi from time to time. ADVERTISEMENT At present, NRIs are required to inform stock exchanges about their clearing member and obtain a CP code, which is used by exchanges to track their positions in the derivatives segment. The regulator has directed stock exchanges and clearing corporations to implement the revised norms within 30 days. Also, they have been asked to allow existing NRI clients to opt out of the CP code framework by submitting an email request within 90 days. Further, members will be required to offer an option to NRIs who initially opt for CP code but later decide to exit, based on an email request. Illegal sale of fireworks, illicit import of Chinese fireworks caused loss of 40% to fireworks traders, says federation
Federation of Tamil Nadu Fireworks Traders have alleged that illegally functioning online sale of fireworks and illicit import of Chinese fireworks has caused a loss of ₹800 crore to the fireworks traders of the country during 2024 Deepavali season. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, the federation president V. Raja Chandrasekaran said that despite the Supreme Court banning taking online orders and sale of fireworks in 2018, the illegal online sale continued. 'This has been more pronounced in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Before it spreads to other States, the Government should ensure that no online sale of fireworks could be done,' he said. Besides, stealth import of Chinese goods continued, he charged. He pointed out that even recently, Chinese fireworks worth ₹35 crore were seized in Mumbai. 'The combination of online sales and Chinese imports had affected the business of traders to the extent of 40%, which is around ₹800 crore to ₹1000 crore, during Deepavali season 2024,' he said. The federation would proceed with a case of contempt of court for allowing online sale of fireworks besides initiating criminal case, he said. License for fireworks shops Mr. Chandrasekaran complained that applications submitted for permanent cracker shops in February and March 2025 were yet to be processed. 'The process should have been completed within two months,' he said. Besides, the license for permanent cracker shops is issued for five years under Explosives Act 2008. However, since the Department of Fireworks and Rescue gives no-objection certificate for only one year, the Revenue Department was giving license for only one year in many districts, he complained. Besides, he insisted that the inordinate delay in giving license for temporary cracker shops during Deepavali season was taking a huge toll on the traders. 'The applications should be invited 90 days before Deepavali and the 15-day license should be given one month ahead of Deepavali to help the traders plan their business,' he said. The federation secretary, N. Elangovan, was present.
