BBC Newsa day ago
Police have seized 14 illegal e-bikes during an operation targeting antisocial riders in a city centre.Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police organised the action in Plymouth on Tuesday after receiving reports of the bikes being ridden in a dangerous manner. The force said any e-bike which exceeded the legal speed of 15.5mph (25 km/h) or had a power output of more than 250 watts was illegal, would be seized and potentially destroyed.Sgt Clare Moore said the bikes - which can only be ridden legally by people aged 14 or over - could cause serious injuries if involved in a crash.
"People have been really worried about antisocial riding and injury because there's been reports both locally and nationally of quite significant collisions," she said.
'Robust approach'
Among the e-bikes seized during the operation included one with a throttle on it, which police said could help it go faster than the legal speed limit.Insp Greg Bridgett said the force seized 29 e-bikes during a similar operation in Plymouth earlier in August and had dealt with a couple of serious collisions in recent months. He added the force would be planning more operations in the future.Mr Bridgett said: "We will take a robust approach to anyone riding those bikes illegally and we will be seizing those bikes if we find them being ridden in that way."

Officers were ‘covered in blood' after Pc shot with a crossbow

A police officer who was shot by a man with a crossbow said he lost so much blood that his colleagues were 'covered' in it. On Wednesday, a sentencing hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court heard police had been called after Jason King stabbed neighbour Alistair Mahwuto with a 'small knife' during an altercation, arising out of a 'long-standing' dispute. Police attended the scene in School Close in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, where King shot repeatedly at them using a crossbow before chasing them with the weapon and shooting officer Pc Curtis Foster, the court was told. The 55-year-old was later shot once by police in the stomach after refusing to put down the weapon when confronted by officers on May 10 last year, the court heard. Footage released by Thames Valley Police shows King, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, running across a road, pursuing the officers while pointing a crossbow. Pc Foster said of the incident: 'My recollection of the early moments when I arrived on scene was the street was empty, it was eerily quiet, no sign of the suspect and we then saw the victim who showed us a stab wound in the abdomen. 'I ascertained King had a crossbow when he removed the upstairs window to his property. He literally took the whole window out of its frame and then he was pointing something out of the window and I could see a red glint and then I realised it was a crossbow and that's when he took two shots at me out the window.' The officer added that he knew something had 'impacted' him but his adrenaline levels were 'so high' that he could not feel much pain. As a result, Pc Foster carried on running and helped clear members of the public away from the scene, despite his injury. Bodyworn camera footage shows the officer saying he thinks he has been shot and telling people to 'get back' into their houses as there is a man armed with a crossbow. Pc Foster said: 'I kind of first realised I was bleeding quite a lot when I could feel it running down my leg, and then I touched my leg above my trousers and my whole palm of my hand was red where it had gone through my trousers already so I thought yeah, I'm losing quite a lot of blood already.' He continued: 'There was a lot of blood. 'My two colleagues that turn up initially on scene were covered in my blood, that's how much blood I'd lost and when we got to the hospital the doctor had a feel of it and said I was really lucky it didn't strike an artery, it was a couple of centimetres away from hitting an artery in my leg.' Another clip shows King being confronted by an armed officer who shouts at him to 'stay still' before the officer fires one shot. The officer then runs over to King while other voices can be heard calling for paramedics. The armed officer, who cannot be named, said shooting King was 'the worst thing I've ever had to do' but that it 'neutralised a threat and kept everyone safe'. Further footage shows a police dog handler shouting to colleagues that King had attempted to shoot police dog Merlyn. Pc Foster has since made a full recovery from his injuries, police have said, while King was taken to hospital and discharged 10 days later. Judge Jonathan Cooper jailed King for nine years with a further three years on extended licence. He previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, having an article with a blade or point, having an offensive weapon, wounding with intent and affray.

Low-flying police helicopter pilot faces no action over motorbike pursuit

A police pilot who pursued a man on a motorbike by flying a helicopter only a few metres above the ground acted 'appropriately and within regulations', a review has found. Footage shared on social media shows a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter in pursuit of a motorcyclist in Merseyside on August 13. Merseyside police were called to reports of a man riding in a 'dangerous and reckless manner' near Carr Mill Dam. The NPAS helped police by tracking the motorcycle for more than an hour, providing continuous updates to officers on the ground. The helicopter crew had lowered their altitude with the intention to land but the pursuit continued and they climbed again, the NPAS said. After an internal review, the NPAS was 'satisfied that the crew acted appropriately'. Chief Superintendent Fiona Gaffney of the NPAS, said: 'This was a legitimate policing task in support of public safety and crime prevention. Once in a safe location, the crew recorded the decision to lower altitude with the intention of landing. As the motorcyclist continued to make off, the landing was discontinued and the aircraft accelerated before climbing away. This is an accepted take-off manoeuvre.' She added: 'Following a full internal review of the aircraft footage, radio comms and operational decisions, we're satisfied the crew acted appropriately and within regulations.' NPAS helicopters typically fly at between 60 and 150 metres during routine patrols but can go lower when pursuing a vehicle or conducting surveillance. Gaffney said: 'The fast-paced and unpredictable nature of vehicle pursuits can require crews to make rapid decisions to ensure public safety. We have robust procedures in place to support these decisions and safety remains our highest priority. We continue to work closely with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to ensure all relevant standards and procedures are upheld.' • A1 crash: seven officers hurt after collision involving five police cars A CAA spokesman said it was aware of the incident and would 'review the outcome and the processes that were followed'. A 33-year-old man from Rainford was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle that had been taken without the owner's consent, driving whilst disqualified, failing to stop, using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third-party insurance and conspiring to intentionally or recklessly cause a public nuisance. A 32-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and assisting an offender. Both men have been released under investigation. The NPAS provides air support to all police forces in England and Wales with its 23 aircraft. They help track suspects, manage vehicle pursuits from the air, support officers on the ground, provide aerial surveillance and help locate vulnerable people.

Brit woman, 59, arrested after groping girl, 14, on Costa del Sol beach in ‘repugnant & intolerable' sexual assault

A BRIT woman has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a popular holiday spot. The shocking incident is alleged to have taken place earlier this month, but only came to light today. 2 2 The 59-year-old Brit is said to have approached the teenager on a Costa del Sol beach. She allegedly spoke to her in English to "gain her trust" before groping her. The youngster, who is an Italian national, rushed to a nearby shop to seek help where a relative was working. They subsequently called the police to report the incident. Cops held the Brit, who allegedly has a history of sexual offences, in the same area. The shocking incident happened at La Cala de Mijas near Fuengirola earlier in the month. While the arrest was made by local police, Civil Guard officers are the ones who took her to court. It is unclear today whether the Brit was a holidaymaker or an expat in Spain. In addition, it's also unknown if she has been remanded in custody pending an ongoing investigation or released on bail. Local councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas described her alleged behaviour as "repugnant and intolerable". First tourists visit North Korea's ghostly 'Benidorm' resort where 'minders' follow visitors & phones are 'bugged' He added that, even though she has not yet been charged with any crime, it "deserves the strongest condemnation". The councillor further said the co-operation of locals and the rapid intervention of local police helped secure the arrest. "This case shows that when we work together, we manage to halt very serious situations," he said. Earlier this month, a Brit assassin who Spanish police say was on the run was arrested in Costa del Sol. Pistols, ammunition and a silencer were found in his smashed-up Nissan Qashqai. The suspected hitman had a run-in with two women at a petrol station - after which he crashed his car. He reportedly began harassing two Dutch women after trying to get them to buy him cocaine. The suspect tried to flee as cops arrived at the scene. Sources told local paper Diario Sur that he ran out of the car "with visible injuries" before quickly being caught by police.
