Canara bank waives minimum balance requirement for all SB accounts

Canara Bank has become the first major public sector bank to announce a complete waiver of the average monthly balance (AMB) requirement for all types of savings bank (SB) accounts. The new policy comes into effect from June 1.
'No more AMB penalties,' the bank said, highlighting that no SB account holder will be charged for low balances anymore.
The bank emphasised that this step reinforces its customer-centric approach and aligns with its mission to make everyday banking simpler and more inclusive, calling it a step towards 'genuine no penalty' banking.
Applies to all types of SB accounts
According to the bank, the waiver covers the entire range of SB accounts, including:
· Regular savings accounts
· Salary accounts
· NRI savings accounts
· Senior citizen and student accounts
Previously, customers were required to maintain a minimum monthly average balance depending on the type of account. Non-compliance usually led to service charges or penalty fees.
Who benefits?
This move is expected to benefit millions of account holders across the country. Those who stand to gain the most include:
· Salaried individuals
· Pensioners and senior citizens
· Students and first-time bank users
· Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
By removing the AMB requirement, the bank aims to make banking more accessible and affordable, especially for customers in rural and semi-urban areas.

Apple loses bid to pause app store reform order in Epic Games case

Apple has failed to persuade a US appeals court to pause key parts of a federal judge's order requiring the iPhone maker to immediately open its lucrative App Store to more competition. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday rejected Apple's request to put the provisions on hold as the tech company appeals the judge's order, which came in a long-running antitrust lawsuit brought by 'Fortnite' maker Epic Games. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in April found Apple in contempt of an earlier injunction order she issued in the Epic Games case. Apple in a statement said it was "disappointed with the decision not to stay the district court's order, and we'll continue to argue our case during the appeals process." Epic did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The judge on April 30 ordered Apple to end several practices that she said were designed to circumvent the injunction, including a new 27% fee Apple imposed on app developers when its customers complete an app purchase outside the App Store. The court also prohibited Apple from restricting where developers place links to make purchases outside of an app. In its emergency appeal, Apple said the ruling blocked the company from "exercising control over core aspects of its business operations" and forced it to give free access to its services. Epic Games countered that Apple was trying to continue evading competition and collecting fees that the judge had barred. Apple has faced a "surge of genuine competition" since Gonzalez Rogers issued her April injunction, as developers updated apps with "better payment methods, better deals, and better consumer choice," Epic said. Epic Games sued Apple in 2020 to loosen its control over transactions in applications that use its iOS operating system and how apps are distributed to consumers. Apple mostly won the case, but Gonzalez Rogers in 2021 said Apple must allow developers to more easily steer consumers to potentially cheaper non-Apple payment options. Apple defied that court order to maintain a revenue stream worth billions of dollars, Gonzalez Rogers wrote in April. She also said Apple had misled the court about its efforts to comply with her injunction and referred the company and one of its executives to federal prosecutors for a possible criminal contempt investigation.

NRI couple falls prey to realty fraud, lose Rs 10 cr

1 2 Hyderabad: Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Cyberabad police registered a case against two real estate firms along with their senior executives for allegedly defrauding an NRI couple of Rs 10 crore in the name of a premium forest villa project. The accused duo has also been booked for threatening and intimidating the victims employing anti-social elements. According to complainant Anil Kumar Gullapally (44), an NRI businessman from Australia currently staying at Gundlapochampally, Sharat Nallamothu and his wife Pooja Nallamothu lured him and his wife, Tatineni Akhila, into investing in the 'Forest Villa Project' in Dec 2023. The NRI couple was told that the project — located in Bhairkhanpalle village of Rangareddy district — was being developed using the popular Japanese Miyawaki plantation method, over 150 acres. "The accused offered the victims a 20% stake in three related entities and made them pay Rs 4.47 crore through cheques and RTGS transfers. An additional Rs 5.53 crore was paid in cash," said an EOW official. When Anil visited the property in April 2024 he found no significant development. When he confronted the accused and sought his money back, the NRI alleged that Nallamothu along with six to eight other individuals threatened him and his family with dire consequences if they pursued legal action. Since the situation was unfavourable for the victims due to their NRI status and limited local support, they approached the EOW. EOW police registered a case under Sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 316(2) (punishment for criminal breach of trust), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) read with 61(2) (criminal conspiracy punishment) of the BNS against the accused. Investigators are collecting evidence from the complainant as part of the preliminary probe.

No question of review of satcom spectrum recommendation based COAI's reax: TRAI sources

New Delhi, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) on Wednesday categorically ruled out any review of recommendations on satcom spectrum at this stage, based on industry body COAI 's claims. Sources in TRAI told PTI that the regulator has already given its recommendations to the government "after following the due consultation process exhaustively and transparently". All stakeholders were given adequate opportunity to represent their viewpoint during the consultation process, they said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now Undo There is no question of review of the recommendations at this stage based on reactions of the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), TRAI sources said. The comments assume significance as COAI - whose members include Reliance Jio and Airtel - has approached the telecom department to raise concerns over TRAI recommendations on the satcom spectrum, claiming that "incorrect assumptions" have led to unjustifiably low spectrum charges for satellite services relative to terrestrial networks . Live Events In a letter dated May 29, COAI claimed that TRAI's recommendations are based on incorrect assumptions and that their implementation will hit the sustainability of terrestrial services, which form the foundation of India's digital infrastructure. COAI has urged the Department of Telecom (DoT) to form a committee to "undertake a comprehensive review of the recommendations in their entirety, ensuring the process is guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and equity and also give an opportunity to TSPs (telcos) to share their views regarding the same". The industry body argued that the recommendations provide a regulatory advantage to commercial Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellites against terrestrial broadband service providers and, if accepted by the DoT in their present form, will undermine competition and create a non-level playing field. COAI said that TRAI's recommendations do not appear to address the most fundamental and contentious issue -- the lack of a level-playing field between terrestrial service providers and satellite operators serving the same market. "The said recommendations are based on incorrect assumptions and implementation of these recommendations will impact the sustainability of terrestrial services that form the foundation of India's digital infrastructure," the association had said. The telecom regulator last month suggested that satellite communication companies like Starlink pay four per cent of their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) as spectrum charges to the government. Operators offering satellite-based broadband internet services in urban areas would have to shell out an additional Rs 500 per subscriber annually. No additional levy would be applicable for services in rural areas. COAI also argued that the recommendation of a spectrum charge at four per cent of AGR is without justification. "It is well known and TRAI would surely be fully aware that with the advent of next-generation NGSO broadband services -- including low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO) constellations -- satellite services are now capable of directly substituting and competing with terrestrial fixed and mobile broadband networks," COAI said.
