'Members of five families tried to end my political career by conspiring together on a large scale," Tej Pratap wrote in Hindi on X. 'In my political life spanning more than 10 years, I have never done anything wrong to anyone nor have I conspired against anyone."

5 Dead, 36 Hurt In Colombia Bomb Attack Near Air Base, Probe Underway

Last Updated: Cali Mayor Eder has announced a ban on large trucks entering the city, citing the risk of additional attacks. A vehicle bomb explosion in the Colombian city of Cali killed at least five people and injured dozens more on Thursday, according to reports from AFP. The incident occurred near a military facility and has raised concerns about escalating violence in the lead-up to the 2026 presidential elections. Cali's Mayor Alejandro Eder confirmed the toll, stating that preliminary reports indicated at least five fatalities and 36 people injured. The explosion occurred on a busy street in the northern part of the city, close to the Marco Fidel Suárez Military Aviation School. Authorities believe the blast targeted the air base directly. Police officials stated that the vehicle bomb was likely meant to hit military personnel stationed at the base. While the motive remains unclear, some officials have suggested the attack may be an attempt to destabilize ongoing peace efforts in the region. Eyewitnesses described the moment of the explosion. Héctor Fabio Bolaños, 65, told AFP, 'There was a thunderous sound of something exploding near the air base. Many houses were damaged in front of the base." Following the blast, several buildings, including a school, were evacuated as a precaution. Another witness indicated that some of those killed may have been civilians passing by at the time of the explosion. In response to the attack, Mayor Eder has announced a ban on large trucks entering the city, citing the risk of additional threats. He also offered a reward of US$10,000 for information leading to those responsible. While the investigation is ongoing, no group has claimed responsibility. However, Valle del Cauca Governor Dilian Francisca Toro condemned the bombing, calling it a 'terrorist attack." She added, 'Terrorism will not defeat us." The Colombian Air Force released an official statement, saying, 'At this time, efforts are underway to verify the damage to facilities and personnel, as well as the investigation to determine the causes and perpetrators of this terrorist act, which threatens civilians and the lives of the men and women who serve Colombians from the Air Force." Colombia has seen a rise in violence in recent months. In June, leftist guerrillas claimed responsibility for attacks around Cali that left seven people dead. On Thursday, a separate incident in Antioquia department resulted in eight deaths during clashes between guerrilla fighters and police officers. Authorities have not yet confirmed who was behind that attack. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trump Pick Alina Habba Serving Illegally As US Attorney, Says Federal Judge

Last Updated: Judge Brann further noted that Habba's appointment had occurred 'through a novel series of legal and personnel moves.' Alina Habba, currently serving as the acting US Attorney for New Jersey, has been disqualified from continuing her role in any active criminal cases initiated by her office. A federal judge issued the ruling on Thursday, stating that the former personal attorney for President Donald Trump has not been lawfully serving in an official legal capacity. 'Faced with the question of whether Ms. Habba is lawfully performing the functions and duties of the office of the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, I conclude that she is not," wrote Judge Matthew Brann of the Middle District of Pennsylvania in his opinion. Judge Brann further noted that Habba's appointment had occurred 'through a novel series of legal and personnel moves." His ruling may still be appealed by the Trump administration before it officially takes effect. The decision came in response to a legal challenge brought by criminal defendants in New Jersey. The group questioned the validity of the charges filed against them, arguing that Habba no longer held the authority to prosecute after the expiration of her 120-day term in July. Last month, in anticipation of the term's expiration, New Jersey's federal district judges had selected a new nominee to succeed Habba as acting US Attorney. However, that appointment was blocked by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who removed the judges' nominee from the office entirely. Habba was sworn in as acting US Attorney on March 28, shortly after serving as President Trump's personal legal counsel. In April, during a Fox News interview, she revealed her office had initiated an investigation into New Jersey's Democratic Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matthew Platkin. The following month, in May, she again appeared on Fox News to announce that criminal charges were being brought against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Her 120-day appointment officially concluded last month. To continue serving in the role beyond that term, Habba would require confirmation by the US Senate, something that has not occurred yet. The Justice Department, however, has defended her continued service, asserting that the president holds wide authority to fill such vacancies. 'The President has made clear that he will not permit anyone other than Ms Habba to fill the current vacancy in the office of the United States Attorney on a temporary basis," prosecutors wrote in a recent court filing. view comments First Published: August 22, 2025, 03:35 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. China stands by India, firmly opposes 50% US tariff & threat to hike it: Envoy

Xu said in the face of such acts, silence or compromise only emboldens the bully. NEW DELHI: With PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping set to carry forward the Sino-Indian rapprochement in their upcoming meeting in Tianjin, Chinese ambassador to India Xu Feihong Thursday backed India on the issue of US tariffs saying China strongly opposed the Trump administration's move to impose 50% tariffs on India for its oil procurement from Russia. Xu said in the face of such acts, silence or compromise only emboldens the bully. "US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and even threatened more. China firmly opposes it. China will firmly stand with India to uphold the multilateral trading system with WTO at its core," said the ambassador. He also said the essence of trade was to complement each other's advantages and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, not a calculation of who loses and who gains. He said trade should not become a tool for pursuing individual selfish interests. "US has long benefited gr-eatly from free trade, but now it is using tariffs as a bargaining chip to demand exorbitant prices from various countries," said Xu at an event organised by thinktanks Chintan Research Foundation and Centre for Global India Insights. "The development of China and India has not been completely smooth, but fri-endship and cooperation have always been the main theme. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo There might be challenges, but unity and cooperation are our only options," said Xu. His remarks came ahead of Modi's first visit to China in seven years. He will be in Ti-anjin on Aug 31 for SCO summit, on the margins of which he will have bilateral meetings with Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of other member-states. The ambassador called for enhancing strategic trust and focusing on common interests. He said economic and trade structures of China and India were complementary. "We'll welcome more Indian commodities into the Chinese market. India has a competitive edge in IT, software and biomedicine, while China is seeing rapid expansion in the fields of electronic manufacturing, infrastructure construction and new energy. The Chinese side welcomes more Indian enterprises to invest in China. It is also hoped that the Indian side could provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for the Chinese enterprises in India, so as to promote common development of industries and benefit the people of the two nations," he said.
