Sobriety checkpoint in Hampden County this weekend conducted by Massachusetts State Police
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Friday in Hampden County to help prevent under-the-influence driving.
Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble states the checkpoint will be held somewhere in Hampden County between Friday, March 28th, into Saturday, March 29th.
'Stop The Swerve' puts spotlight on impaired driving
The checkpoints are an effort to help educate drivers and bring awareness to detecting a motorist driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. State Police say they will be done during various hours and the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary. Signs will also inform drivers of an upcoming checkpoint to reduce fear and anxiety.
The sobriety checkpoints are funded through a grant by the Office of Grants and Research of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

Human skull found in Pitcairn was found inside house last owned by man who disappeared 20 years ago
There is no caution tape on the doors, no evidence markers on the sidewalk and a construction crew is working. But those who live on 7th Street in Pitcairn can't help but think about what was found. 'I want to cleanse the area and call a priest! Seriously,' said neighbor Betty Rice. Allegheny County Police said the homeowner found a skull inside, but according to County Property Records, the homeowner is Charles R. Beltz, who disappeared 20 years ago. 'Was there a crime? Was he just found? Were there any cult practices? I just think it's weird,' said Rice. According to State Police, Beltz disappeared on June 7th, 2005, after traveling to Elk County for a fishing trip. His wife filed a missing persons report, but he was never found. Dennis Dirkmaat recently retired as the Director of the Applied Forensic Sciences Department at Mercyhurst University. For over 30 years he has worked to identify people based on bones. 'Fake vs real is instantaneously, once we take a look at it or see it. But the rest of it is measurements, the look, as I said in detail,' said Dirkmaat. He said in most cases, bones can be identified. 'We have a forensic odontologist, and she got a skull that morning, and by that evening, has been able to compare and make a positive ID,' said Dirkmaat. Allegheny County Police have not identified the skull found in Pitcairn as the construction on the home continues. 'I want justice for the victim... If there is a victim,' said Rice. Two men arrested during street-level enforcement operations in Greenfield
GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two men were arrested in Greenfield during street-level enforcement operations conducted by members of the Northwestern District Attorney's Anti-Crime Task Force. In a news release sent to 22News from the Northwestern District Attorney's Office, detectives from state police and Greenfield police with the Northwestern District Attorney's Anti-Crime Task Force made two drug and weapons-related arrests. Holyoke man charged with attempted murder and multiple gun offenses This past Wednesday, officers conducted a traffic stop on Bernardston Road in Greenfield at approximately 10:30 p.m. Ashfield resident, 34-year-old Christopher Gonyea, was arrested and charged with the following: Possession of a Class A substance (Heroin/Fentanyl) Possession of a Class B substance (cocaine) Possession of a Class E substance A traffic stop was conducted on Wells Street in Greenfield on June 3 at around 8:30 p.m. An officer observed drug paraphernalia in a car and, following an investigation, loaded handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine as well as additional ammunition and approximately 79 grams of cocaine. Holyoke man charged with attempted murder and multiple gun offenses
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Holyoke last month. In a news release from Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan, officers were called at around 6:15 p.m. on May 26 for a report of a shooting victim in the area of Race and Dwight Streets. When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from a gunshot. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Suspect wanted in connection with armed robbery arrested following Springfield police chase Police say that the shooting happened a few minutes beforehand in the area of West and Mosher Streets. A description of the suspect and their vehicle was obtained. The vehicle was found on Clemente Street at around 6:45 p.m. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, 33-year-old Victor Manuel-Pirela of Holyoke. On Wednesday at around 1 p.m., officers located Manuel-Pirela inside an apartment on Spring Street in Springfield.
