Sheriff visits Springfield school to discuss safe decision making ahead of prom
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi will talk to students at Duggan Academy in Springfield on Monday. 'Stop The Swerve' puts spotlight on impaired driving 'I made a mistake, and I own that. But I also believe that leadership means being honest—even when it's uncomfortable—and using every opportunity to help others learn from your experience,' Sheriff Cocchi said. 'If sharing my story makes just one student stop and think before making a potentially dangerous decision, then it's worth it. These young people are on the edge of a bright future, and I want them to get there safely,' Sheriff Cocchi shared. Students and parents heard powerful stories from individuals impacted by reckless driving. Plus, there was a simulation for students to experience impaired and distracted driving. Anthony Gulluni, Hampden District Attorney told 22News, 'Our objective is to get young people to think and talk about these issues as they are around that 16-17 year age and they are getting their license and understanding the privelege and the responsibility that it is to have a license and be on our roads.' Gulluni adds that they hold this program specifically before prom and graduation season in efforts to stop reckless driving during those milestone celebrations. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, about 37 people a day die from drunk driving.
