Agriculture must embrace tech to remain competitive, says Hajiji
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Sunday (Aug 3).
'The future of this sector depends on the community's ability to innovate and adapt to the new landscape of modern agriculture,' he said.
Hajiji said that agriculture was the third-largest contributor to Sabah's economy, contributing RM12.2bil, or 14.5% to the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing ceremony of HPPNK 2025. It was also attended by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, as well as other federal and state leaders.

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to ensuring the agriculture sector continues to be a key driver of growth and a catalyst for a more dynamic and resilient Sabah economy. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the sector is not only the third-largest contributor to the state's economy but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national food security. 'This sector contributes RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Therefore, the State Government is prioritising efforts to further strengthen this sector through more strategic and inclusive approaches,' he said at the closing of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sunday. Among the concrete measures is the re-establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year — after being dissolved in 1981 — to boost the local rice industry and raise the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of rice to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is in line with the priorities of the Federal Government led by Anwar who has placed strong emphasis on agriculture, especially rice cultivation,' he said. He emphasised the importance of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart farming to increase production efficiency, boost productivity, and attract younger generations to the sector. He said Sabah currently has 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) that had produced over 1,494 metric tons of food products, generating more than RM4.32 million to date. Hajiji also announced Sabah's first high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector — development of a European Union-standard tuna and deep-sea seafood landing port in Kota Kinabalu by the State Government in partnership with a local company, with an investment value reaching RM360 million. He said the port is expected to land 50,000 tons of tuna annually, with the potential to generate up to RM1.8 billion in economic value per year, positioning Sabah as one of the major deep-sea players. Half Sabah's population are workers

PENAMPANG: Sabah recorded a labour force of over 1.7 million last year – or half the state's population – and their collective contribution has driven Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to increase to RM84.3 billion. 'This has contributed to the rise in GDP, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, as well as services,' said Chief Minister Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said there are 92 registered trade unions in the State, regulated by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department, comprising 23 unions in the government sector, 52 in the private sector and 16 in statutory bodies. 'This involves a total membership of 60,764 workers, with 22,317 from the government sector, 35,194 private sector and 3,253 from statutory bodies,' he said, . In line with globalisation and rapid technological advancement, Hajiji called on trade unions in the State to be more proactive in safeguarding the welfare of their members through initiatives and programs offered at both the Federal and State levels. 'This is where the role of unions becomes critically important as the main pillar in upholding social justice and ensuring that every worker receives their rightful entitlements, not only fair wages, but also opportunities for skills development, workplace safety and health, strong social protection and a supportive and conducive working environment,' he said. Advertisement He advised union leaders in Sabah participating in the National-level Trade Union Assembly in Penang on Sept. 6 to bring the voices of Sabah's workers to the national stage. Hajiji said the State Government welcomes trade unions as strategic partners. Within this new and more inclusive development framework, the voice of unions must be heard and given serious attention. 'This applies not only to issues of wages and benefits, but also policy formulation, economic planning, education, technology adaptation and creation of a sustainable future work environment. 'I believe Sabah has the potential to become a model state in Malaysia in developing an employment ecosystem that not only drives a strong economy but also consistently upholds workers' rights,' he said He said the State Government is committed to empowering the workforce, supporting the trade union movement and ensuring their welfare is protected. 'I hope this assembly will serve as a platform for us to strengthen the spirit of unionism and working together to build a brighter future for Sabah.' Smart SBB revolutionises padi farming in Kota Belud
Adlin showing the new padi variety.-Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): The Smart Large-Scale Padi Field (Smart SBB) programme has revolutionised padi farming in Kota Belud with the introduction of advanced technologies such as drone usage and modern ploughing machinery. Launched in 2023, this high-impact initiative has not only modernised the padi farming sector but has also nurtured a new generation of padi farmers who are more productive, efficient, professional, and competitive in increasing their yields. Kampung Jawi-Jawi Village is among the pioneering locations for the Smart SBB programme in Kota Belud, Sabah's main rice granary, located about 73 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu. Nineteen padi farmers are involved in cultivating 49 hectares of padi under this initiative. Sharing his experience with Bernama, Adlin Mohammad, the Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) farm manager in Jawi-Jawi, said the programme has significantly transformed the lives of padi farmers, who no longer rely on manual labour as they once did. Adlin, 51, a third-generation padi farmer who has been in the industry for 18 years, shared that the use of modern technology has not only saved time and energy but also enhanced fieldwork efficiency. 'We used to plough with buffaloes, but now we use a variety of modern machinery, adapted to the area's terrain and soil conditions,' he said when met by Bernama at the BERNAS booth during the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day 2025 celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre, which concluded yesterday. Although there was initial scepticism, Adlin said the programme has since received a positive response from farmers, who now embrace the blend of traditional knowledge and modern technology. 'The rice-seeding process using drones is not only faster but also more uniform compared to traditional methods. Farmers no longer need to be in the fields daily. They can now monitor operations remotely,' explained Adlin, who plays a key role in overseeing the Smart SBB operations in his village. In addition to more systematic irrigation management, the programme also emphasises disease and pest control, with farmers guided to conduct regular monitoring to minimise the risk of crop infection. This proactive approach, he said, has improved discipline in crop management, addressing longstanding challenges such as pest infestations and unpredictable weather patterns like drought. He said padi yields have also shown consistent improvement throughout the programme's four seasons, with production rising from 4.11 metric tonnes per hectare in the first season to 4.59 metric tonnes per hectare in the fourth season this year. 'Every increase in paddy production means that our income also increases. We hope to be able to continue this momentum,' he said, hoping that the relevant agencies could provide diesel subsidies and logistical assistance, particularly for harvesting operations outside BERNAS-supervised areas. He proposed the introduction of new padi seed varieties, noting that while TR8 seeds have been in use for nearly a decade due to their suitability for local soil and climate conditions, newer varieties could offer even better yields. Adlin emphasised the importance of continued government support for BERNAS by approving proposals that could expand the Smart SBB initiative and strengthen infrastructure to boost paddy production. The Smart SBB programme is a strategic initiative under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security aimed at increasing padi output, improving farmers' income, and ensuring national food security through the use of modern technology and integrated management. Apart from BERNAS, the programme in Kota Belud is implemented in collaboration with technical agencies such as the Kota Belud Integrated Agricultural Development Area, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and the Kota Belud Area Farmers' Organisation. Following its success in Kampung Jawi-Jawi, the programme was expanded in the second season of 2023 to cover 174.97 hectares with the participation of 121 farmers. – Bernama
