Canada Shakes Off the Rust on Defense
The politics of military spending is a funny thing. Canada's Liberal Party spent the past decade making promises it had no intention of keeping, and in July 2023 we called Canada's 1.38% of GDP contribution 'pathetic.' But suddenly a strong defense can play well at home as anti-American, even as it helps appease President Trump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $9 billion in new military spending this past week, enough to bring Canada in compliance with NATO's current 2% of GDP target by early next year. Justin Trudeau, Mr. Carney's predecessor, had pledged to meet the target by 2032, which might as well mean never.

The EU's Mission to Win Over Trump at G-7
Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg's daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union. Rising energy prices would complicate EU efforts to lower the oil-price cap to squeeze Russian revenues, one of the bloc's priorities for the 50th anniversary of the gathering but a proposal that lacks crucial US backing. Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the EU is ready to coordinate with like-minded partners to ensure energy-market stability. Meanwhile, EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic has joined the EU delegation in Canada, seeking progress in talks with American counterparts on trade tariffs with the aim of sealing a deal before a July 9 deadline.

Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell has barely a year left to fortify his legacy. For all the plaudits he gets for steering an aggressive hiking cycle without crashing the economy, it will be forever tarnished by misdiagnosing post-pandemic inflation as transitory. That misjudgment proved costly to monetary policy credibility. For now, that's water under the bridge. The Fed's management of the fallout has been as successful as anyone could have hoped.
