Orlando Pirates move draws closer? Rulani's strange reverse psychology

The latest quotes from Rulani Mokwena will have alarm bells ringing in the Orlando Pirates camp. Is he paving the way for an exit?
In the latest developments between Rulani Mokwena and Wydad AC, the former Sundowns boss has hinted that his current employers deserve a better coach.
'It's up to the president, I already said at the end of the season, I will leave. So, that's the situation,' he told the media.
'I love Wydad, I will only coach Wydad in Morocco, if I leave, I leave as a Wydad. When you say 'Dima Wydad', you say 'Dima Wydad' forever, and just to thank the president, he's been amazing.
'I think Wydad has the best president in Morocco, maybe in Africa. The players have given me everything of the best, the staff has been good.
'Wydad is a big club, you know, they deserve to win, and maybe they deserve a better coach than me,' Mokwena concluded.

Relebohile Mofokeng has racked up a staggering 41 appearances in the 2024-2025 season across all competitions. Arguably the club's most important operator, he's produced 10 goals and 13 assists in those matches. It's a stellar output for any player, let alone one who's just exited his teens. Is there a succession plan for he inevitably leaves for a wealthier league abroad? Money can buy good players, but some stars are priceless. Pirates have unearthed a new teenager, but he's unlikely to make an impact for some time.

Cape Town Spurs plot return by buying Pretoria Callies' status

Cape Town Spurs have dramatically dropped their High Court challenge against Durban City FC, ending a tense legal fight over promotion and relegation in South African football. However, the Urban Warriors refused to accept their relegation fate and are now attempting to secure a return to the Motsepe Foundation Championship by purchasing Pretoria Callies' status. ADVERTISEMENT Durban City secure promotion Spurs had taken legal action after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Durban City in their final Motsepe Foundation Championship fixture. They played the match under protest, claiming that Durban City's midfielder, Saziso Magawana, was improperly registered. Despite Spurs' objections, Durban City clinched automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership. The PSL delayed the trophy handover due to the ongoing legal dispute, but once the High Court ruled in favour of Durban City, they officially received the NFD trophy at the SuperSport TV studios over a week ago. PSL and SAFA rule against Spurs Before turning to the High Court, Spurs had already lost their case before the PSL's Dispute Resolution Chamber, led by Raymond Hack. The chamber dismissed their appeal and ordered the Cape club to pay legal costs. Still unsatisfied, Spurs escalated the issue to SAFA arbitration. However, multiple arbitrators stepped aside from the case, and senior counsel Hilton Epstein SC eventually ruled in favour of Durban City and Saziso Magawana. ADVERTISEMENT Spurs hoped the outcome would see Durban City docked points, a decision that would have secured Spurs' place in the Championship. But those hopes were crushed. Spurs eye Callies in desperate bid to stay up Following their failed legal efforts, Cape Town Spurs have now withdrawn their High Court case. But rather than accept a place in the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier of South African football. They are seeking an alternative route back into the NFD. 'They [Cape Town Spurs] are trying to buy the status of Callies. And you saw the post yesterday about a countdown on their page. Ya, they are definitely trying to get back into the NFD (Motsepe Foundation Championship),' a source revealed. BREAKING: Pirates appoint a new coach Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane have both been training with Kaizer Chiefs after leaving Pirates. The news has divided opinion; some fans believe that both players are Pirates rejects and therefore not good enough to take Chiefs to the next level. Others feel that they still have plenty to offer, especially Monyane, who's a traditional, old-school right-back whose priority is defending rather than getting forward. At 25, he's still got plenty of fuel left in the tank. Mako, however, is 31 and likely past his best. Sea Robbers make their move for Mbuthuma? Abdeslam Ouaddou is Orlando Pirates' new coach

Orlando Pirates have announced Moroccan Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new coach. Ouaddou replaces José Riveiro, who left the Buccaneers to join Al Ahly shortly before the end of the past season after three successful seasons with the Soweto giants. The appointment of Ouaddou, 46, is sure to be met with a some question marks by Pirates supporters. The former Morocco defender or midfielder, who earned 80 caps for the Atlas Lions and spent 11 years playing in Europe, has relatively limited head coaching experience. He coached Marumo Gallants for their last three months of last season's Betway Premiership campaign and steered the Free State side clear of relegation to a creditable 10th place finish. Before that the website Transfermarkt has Ouaddou as having coached Morocco's Mouloudia for four months in late 2020 and early 2021, Loto-Popo FC in Benin for two years from 2021 to 2023, AS Vita Club for nine months in 2024. "Orlando Pirates are pleased to announce the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new head coach," the club said. "Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing José Riveiro at the helm after his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure. "Born in Alnif, Morocco, the 46-year-old brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a tactician. "A former Morocco international, Ouaddou earned 68 caps for the Atlas Lions and enjoyed a distinguished playing career across several top European leagues. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era. "Coach Ouaddou, who is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of the week, will be assisted by Mandla Ncikazi and Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons. Pirates also disclosed their pre-season tour destination in Europe. "Pre-season preparations will officially kick off on June 27. As part of preparations for the upcoming campaign, Pirates will embark on their third consecutive international pre-season tour to Marbella, Spain.
