Horse racing tips: Tuesday, May 13

Telegraph13-05-2025

A low-key day of racing features three meetings of either code, from which our expert Ron Wood has picked a pair of handicappers, one of whom has yet to win and one who triumphed last time out.
Our selections race at Beverley (2.12-4.42pm) and Chepstow (2.20-4.55), with Killarney (5.20-8.20) completing the Flat line-up. Jump racing takes place at Worcester (2.00-5.35), Sligo (5.30-8.30) and Sedgefield (5.40-8.10).

4.20 Chepstow – Class 5 Handicap (6f)
There looks like being more to come from the Patrick Chamings-trained FRANCISCO. His maiden win at Wolverhampton in April came over seven furlongs, but he quickened well off a slow pace, so he's not short of speed and he deserves credit for challenging wide on the turn as the tempo got hotter.
The selection now has to prove himself on turf, but he ran well enough on his only previous outing on grass, at Newmarket on his debut in October 2023, to think he'll be fine.
Francisco can be a slow starter but he should get plenty of pace to chase this time, and he has the pedigree to think he can rate higher than what is still just a modest handicap mark, the four-year-old having been nudged up only 2lb for the Wolverhampton success.
4.42 Beverley – Class 6 Handicap (1m 4f)
There's a straightforward case for ANALOGICAL (NAP). Although his form figures – 799 – may look uninspiring, his three runs came over seven furlongs last year and he's likely to improve for stepping up significantly in distance on his handicap debut as a three-year-old.
He is just the sort that his trainer Sir Mark Prescott does well with and he looks as though he will have too much for some ordinary, more exposed rivals.

Country diary 1950: The first classic sheepdog trial of the season

CUMBERLAND: It was the first of the classic trials of the season. Shafts of sunlight fell across rock, scree, timber, and fern over which companies of hounds were driving the scent of aniseed and paraffin. The light colours among the scores of strivers scudding the trods were like gulls hunting the bracken clock fly. Always ahead and alone was one so dark as to justify his name of Black Diamond. He was racing to register his 130th triumph. For all his elderliness – he is a five-year-old – he was showing his fellows how knowledge added to resolution, speed, and stamina can prevail. Could he finish successfully a task he had begun well? The crowning test was the traverse of two meadows of 500 yards with two stone walls to climb. The hay grass was high. Only head and tail of hound could be seen as his lobbing body waved apart the seeding crop. A challenger was near enough to quicken ambition and to make a further call on heart and lung, but the dark hound did not falter in his stride. Catlike he climbed the walls, topped them, achieved a quick take-off, and flashed to the tape. He was the greatest of all the conquerors of the day.

Horse racing tips: ‘Rossa Ryan is a good booking and she's handicapped to win' – Templegate's NAP worth the wait

TEMPLEGATE takes on Monday's action looking for winners. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. LIVE EACH DAY (9.00 Windsor, nap) She's done well since joining Stuart Williams and followed a Southwell success with a neck second here last time. That was over a mile and she finished strongly to suggest this longer trip will be ideal. Rossa Ryan is a good booking and she's handicapped to win a couple at this level. EDUCATOR (6.20 Pontefract, nb) It was great to see Henrietta Knight back in the winners' enclosure with this six-year-old who had to pick his way through the field to land a cosy success. He relishes this trip on the level and is more than capable of following up. SIR ROCK (2.40 Southwell, treble) He got his act together nicely when winning cosily at Fontwell last month. He kept it simple from the front there and could get another uncontested lead today. That would give him a massive chance. IREZUMI (3.30 Brighton, Lucky 15) He was just a length off the pace when third here last time and takes a drop in standard here. He should be fine with this trip too.
