Mega projects must serve people, not turn cities into concrete jungles, says Anwar
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the RM6.25 billion Ipoh Sentral Development Project here, he said developers must be able to balance the pursuit of progress with public needs and preserve heritage.
'What I mean is that we don't want buildings that may appear grand and impressive, but are culturally barren.
'At times, in our eagerness to pursue development, we simply copy ideas from elsewhere, even though we know the setting and environment may not necessarily be compatible, whether in terms of climate, social values, or cultural context,' he said.
Citing KL Sentral as an example, he said the mega transportation hub in Kuala Lumpur 'is merely a basic reference point, but not a good example to emulate'.
'So, we want something different when envisioning Ipoh, with its own unique landmarks.
'What makes it special is the cultural vibrancy rooted in our heritage, yet it remains modern, embracing new technologies, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, while still preserving our values and culture,' he added.

Anwar praised project developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) for reflecting the Madani concept and urged stakeholders to refine the plans further.
'In the coming months, I request the Perak Menteri Besar, the Transport Minister, the City Council, the Housing and Local Government Ministry, and the Education Ministry to study all these aspects.
'Even though the plans have already been drawn up, we must see if improvements can still be made.
'If we can enhance it further, then Ipoh Sentral can become one of the best and most holistic development models in our country, a project we can proudly showcase,' he said.
Designed as a Transit-Oriented Development, Ipoh Sentral will link directly to Kuala Lumpur and Penang Sentral, integrating rail, bus, taxi, e-hailing, cycling and pedestrian networks to promote walkability and reduce car use.
The 67-acre project will be developed in two phases: Phase 1 will focus on landscaping, recreational upgrades, and a public park with a mosque alongside existing places of worship;
Phase 2 will introduce mixed-use towers with apartments, offices, retail, hotels and community amenities.
Expected to create up to 9,000 jobs during construction and over 10,000 upon completion, the project is a joint venture between Railway Assets Holding Sdn Bhd, Silver Smart Sdn Bhd (Perak State Government), and MRCB.

Malaysia Records 1.8 Million Chinese Tourist Arrivals In First 5 Months
Nearly 1.8 million visitors from China travelled to Malaysia between January and May this year, following the government's decision to introduce a visa waiver for Chinese nationals. Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the policy, which took effect in 2024, had driven a sharp rise in arrivals, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. 'Among these efforts, we invited more than 100 imams from China and Europe to experience first-hand Malaysia's Muslim-friendly tourism concept, which is suitable for people of all backgrounds and religions,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session today. He was replying to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH–Balik Pulau), who had asked about the ministry's measures to attract Muslim tourists from China. Khairul Firdaus added that the ministry, together with the travel agency association, was actively pursuing promotional campaigns targeting Chinese tourists, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences. In response to a separate question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN–Dungun) on ensuring the east coast states also benefit economically, the deputy minister said integrated promotions were being undertaken via Tourism Malaysia and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). These, he said, highlighted attractions such as the Crystal Mosque to audiences in ASEAN, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea. 'However, it is also closely linked to the culture of the local community and when we are able to promote these elements, it will create spillover benefits for industries such as homestays, handicrafts and traditional foods,' he said.

Cabinet agrees to act against ‘irresponsible politicians', says minister
Science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang criticised an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month and for bullying. PETALING JAYA : The Cabinet decided yesterday to have firm action taken against 'irresponsible politicians' inciting sentiments over the recent Jalur Gemilang controversy, according to federal minister Chang Lih Kang. Chang, who is minister for science, technology and innovation, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other ministers were 'very concerned' that the issue would dampen public enthusiasm for National Day. Referring to reports of a police investigation regarding the controversy, he said: 'We shall wait and see whether anyone will eventually be charged in court,' Malaysiakini reported him as saying in a speech in Klang today. In a video on social media, Chang took further shots at an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month. 'It's not only irresponsible, it is an act of bullying. Everyone knows who I am talking about.' His remarks appeared to be about Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who led a group to a hardware shop in Penang after its owner was reported to have accidentally hung the national flag upside down. 'We are a nation and society governed by the rule of law. If there is a problem, lodge a police report and let the authorities take action. 'You are not an enforcement agency. You cannot just bring a group of people to someone's shop, disrupt their business and bully them,' Chang said.
