India needs domestic food processing machinery capabilities to reduce imports: Official
New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) India must build domestic capabilities in food processing machinery to reduce its heavy dependence on imports, even as the country leverages its agricultural strength to emerge as a global leader in food processing, a senior government official said on Thursday.
"Despite our success in production and exports, we remain heavily dependent on imported food processing machinery. It is crucial that the industry and government work together to build domestic capabilities and improve quality and scale," said Devesh Deval, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, at the National Conference on Food Tech organised by ASSOCHAM.
Deval emphasised that India's agricultural prowess must now translate into global leadership in food processing through advanced technology integration.
"We welcome inputs from stakeholders and are open to facilitating broader consultations to identify concrete, actionable steps. What matters is taking timely and measurable action to strengthen every link in the food processing value chain," he added.
The conference saw the launch of a dedicated national stakeholder consultation portal by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to gather inputs for more inclusive and implementable food regulations.
Alka Rao, Advisor (Science & Standards & Regulations), FSSAI, stressed that food regulation and technology must evolve collaboratively. She underlined the importance of creating structured, accessible databases and ensuring responsible use of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, with due caution regarding bias and data gaps.
"FSSAI is already taking concrete steps to integrate technology in regulatory processes," Rao said, calling for collective action from government, industry, experts and small and medium enterprises to build data-driven, tech-enabled food safety systems.
Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Secretary Sudhanshu highlighted both the potential and challenges in India's food processing sector. While India's diverse agro-climatic conditions enable production of a wide variety of crops, the sector faces critical issues such as pesticide residue, perishability and lack of advanced processing and packaging technologies.
Citing successful traceability systems in grapes, organic produce and millets developed in response to global market concerns, he stressed the importance of leveraging next-generation technologies like AI, Internet of Things and advanced packaging solutions to enhance food safety and export readiness.
Vivek Chandra, Chairman, Food Processing and Value Addition Council, ASSOCHAM, said the future of food security depends not just on production but on how food is processed, preserved, packaged and distributed. Against the backdrop of climate change and supply chain disruptions, he highlighted the critical role of next-generation technologies in driving efficiency, safety and sustainability.
A joint knowledge report by ASSOCHAM and PwC was unveiled at the conference.

Marathi manoos wishes to see Thackeray cousins come together, says Sena (UBT) leader
'Even the wish of the Marathi 'manoos' is that both the cousins come together. Both the (cousins) brothers will decide on this,' Prabhu said. Talking to reporters here, Prabhu said his party sincerely wishes that both the cousins unite. Kolhapur, Jun 3 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sunil Prabhu on Tuesday said it is the wish of the Marathi-speaking people to see the Thackeray cousins – Uddhav and Raj – come together. He said the charisma of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray is such that the party will rise from the ashes like phoenix. The Shiv Sena (UBT) contested 97 seats in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls but could win only 20. Recently, the Thackeray cousins sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with statements indicating that they could ignore 'trivial issues' and join hands nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways. While the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray said uniting in the interests of Marathi manoos is not difficult, former CM Uddhav Thackeray maintained that he was ready to put aside trivial fights provided that those working against Maharashtra's interests were not entertained. Raj left the undivided Shiv Sena in 2005 after Bal Thackeray announced Uddhav as his successor. He formed the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) the next year. In its initial days, the MNS achieved political success, winning 13 seats in the assembly polls in 2009. However, that success started dwindling. Following the 2019 assembly elections, Uddhav Thackeray became the chief minister after his undivided Shiv Sena joined hands with NCP and Congress as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. However, the government collapsed in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde rebelled against him. The rebellion led to a split in the party. PTI PR NP This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Ghaziabad hotelier murder: Killers at large, cops widen search
Three dedicated police teams are working on the case, acting on inputs provided by Ritesh Bindal, one of the named accused arrested on June 2. Multiple raids are underway in Ghaziabad and Haridwar in Uttarakhand as suspects remain untraceable, police officials said on Tuesday. Ghaziabad, Jun 3 (PTI) Ghaziabad Police, which is yet to apprehend the prime suspect for the murder of a hotelier in the city's Rajnagar Extension area which took place a couple of days ago, has widened its search in neighbouring Uttarakhand. 'Raids are ongoing and we are confident the remaining accused will be nabbed soon,' DCP (City Zone) Dhawal Jaiswal said. Rahul Dagar, 32, was gunned down at around 9.30 pm on June 1 near 'Classic Residency' in the Rajnagar Extension area. His nephew 26-year-old Ashish is recovering from a bullet wound he sustained on his leg. The police said a monetary dispute linked to a hotel business in Haldwani seems to be the motive behind the crime. Dagar recently entered into a partnership with one Nagendra Chaudhary, his brother Manish Chaudhary, and Sonia to open a hotel in Haldwani. Tensions reportedly arose when Rahul and Sonia's husband Sachin Sharma, who also managed the hotel, confronted Nagendra and Manish over large sums of money allegedly being siphoned off into their personal accounts, according to police. The police said that the confrontation turned fatal when Nagendra and Mohit Chaudhary allegedly opened fire, hitting Rahul in the chest and Ashish in the leg. The attackers fled as bystanders began to gather. A case was registered by Nandgram Police Station under several BNS Sections including 103 (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 115(2) (causing hurt), 190 and 191(2) (unlawful assembly and rioting), and 193(3) (rioting with deadly weapons). The FIR named Nagendra, Manish, Mohit, Ritesh Bindal, and one Mantri, along with two unidentified accomplices, the police said. Avinash Sirohi, who filed the complaint, told police that four to five rounds were fired during the altercation. ACP (Nandgram) Poonam Mishra, the post-mortem report confirmed that one bullet remained lodged in Rahul's stomach while another pierced through his throat, proving fatal.
