Albanian court begins corruption trial against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha

Yahoo5 days ago
TIRANA, Albania (AP) — An Albanian court on Monday started the trial on corruption charges of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who leads the opposition Democratic Party.
The trial for Berisha, 80, at the Special Court for Corruption and Organized Crime, which covers cases involving senior officials and politicians, also includes his son-in-law and three other people.
In October 2023, prosecutors put Berisha under investigation for allegedly abusing his post to help his son-in-law, Jamarber Malltezi, privatize public land to build 17 apartment buildings in the capital, Tirana.
In September 2024 Berisha was formally charged with corruption in connection with a property deal. He has denied the charges, describing them as political repression ordered by Prime Minister Edi Rama of the left-wing Socialist Party.
On Monday, Berisha reported to the prosecutor's office, as required every two weeks, but said he did not go to the court where he was represented by his lawyers.
'My presence or not is set from my lawyers and naturally in line with the laws,' he told journalists. 'That is a session where my lawyers will present their claims.'
Berisha was prime minister from 2005-2013 and served as president from 1992-1997. He was re-elected as a lawmaker for the center-right conservative Democratic Party in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The United States government in May 2021 and the United Kingdom in July 2022 barred Berisha and close family members from entering their countries because of his alleged involvement in corruption.
Corruption remains a top issue that has continuously negatively affected Albania since the fall of the communist regime in 1990.
Beside Berisha, former President Ilir Meta and members of Berisha's opposition coalition have also been detained and investigated on corruption charges. Both say the charges are politically motivated, accusing the government of corruption.
In October last year, Tirana started full membership negotiations with Brussels on aligning with the European Union on the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions and the fight against corruption. Albania aims to join the bloc by 2030, according to Rama.

Windham Republicans choose Hailey Desaulniers as mayoral candidate

WINDHAM — The Windham Republican Town Committee held its caucus on Tuesday night and candidates for the upcoming November election were endorsed. Committee chair Mike Desaulniers said he was excited to see a mix of new and established names. 'I believe politics in general requires a breath of fresh air,' Desaulniers said. 'In my opinion, it is time for a changing of the guard.' Hailey Desaulniers, the daughter of Mike and Kimberly Desaulniers, will challenge current Mayor Tom DeVivo, a Democrat, for the mayoral seat. 'I appreciate the fact that the new individuals who put their names forward this year genuinely seem concerned about the town, the direction we are heading and the fiscal viability of the town,' Mike Desaulniers said. 'I think everyone recognizes that we are a poverty-stricken town with a wealth of pride in where we live, with a strong sense of family.' For the Board of Finance, Charles Pennewill and Pazit Edelman will be running for the election in the fall, while Dustin Rood and Roger Morin will be on the candidate list for the Zoning Board of Appeals full term. Dustin Rood is also running for the Zoning Board of Appeals as an alternate. For the town council spots, Mike Desaulniers will be running for the Windham seat, while Joshua Holman and Ricky Martinez will be running for the Willimantic seat. The two town councils, which will have at-large slots, will be run by Curtis Ehler and Steven Edelman. John McCommas will be running for the Willimantic Taxing District Board of Directors seat. Mike Desaulniers, Pennewill and Ehler are incumbents in this upcoming election, while Hailey Desaulniers, Rood, Holman and Martinez are newcomers. Edelman is returning to reclaim his seat. 'The predominant sentiment expressed at the caucus last night was a strong desire for community involvement and a desire to see our town succeed,' Desaulniers said. Solve the daily Crossword

6 in 10 voters view Democrats negatively: WSJ poll

The Democratic Party is viewed negatively by 63 percent of American voters — the lowest approval rating of the party in more than 30 years of The Wall Street Journal's surveys — according to a new poll from the newspaper. The survey found that while voters disapproved of President Trump's handling of a variety of issues, they generally said they trusted Republicans more than Democrats to take care of those issues in Congress. On tariffs, for instance, voters disapproved of Trump's policies by 17 percentage points, but trusted Republican lawmakers more than Democrats on the issue by seven points. Only 8 percent of voters viewed Democrats 'very favorably' in the poll. President Trump himself had an approval rating of 46 percent. The Wall Street Journal poll follows a survey from CNN released Thursday which found that just 28 percent of voters viewed the Democrats favorably. Democrats are confronting widespread voter malaise and perceptions that the party is listless ahead of the 2026 midterms as key parts of the party's national infrastructure have been rocked by infighting. Still, they are seeking to capitalize on Trump's more unpopular policies. They hope the GOP's 'big, beautiful bill,' with tax cuts favoring the wealthy alongside significant cuts to Medicaid and other social services, could galvanize voters. A slight majority — 52 percent — of voters in Friday's Journal poll disapproved of the bill. The ongoing controversy over the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — a flashpoint for MAGA voters that Democrats have sought to exploit — may also come into play as members of Congress head home for the August recess. The Journal's poll found that voters were highly skeptical that the Justice Department had thoroughly investigated the issue, with 65 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of Republicans saying they had 'no confidence' in the department's review. The poll of 1,500 registered voters was conducted between July 16 and July 20 with a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points. It was conducted by Democratic pollster John Anzalone and GOP strategist Tony Fabrizio.
