PND junior Ava Lafollette holds impressive record, could score 50 goals this season
The junior forward enters the postseason with 46 goals in 22 games. No player, male or female, has scored more goals in a single soccer season at Notre Dame.
She didn't even know she was close to the record.
'When coach told us that I made the scoring record it was a great feeling,' said LaFollette. 'Last year I only scored 26 goals. I have almost doubled that and we're not done. We have all the postseason to go, hopefully we make it back to state.'
The previous record for goals in season at Notre Dame was 41, shared by Noah Madrigal (2019) and Kayden Hudson (2024).
'I don't know if I've seen a girl more elite in putting the ball in the back of the net,' said PND girls soccer coach Ben Ralf. 'Getting any space, she makes defenders pay for letting her get open.'
The scouting report is out an on most nights, Lafollette is drawing two defenders, sometimes three. Yet she is still able to generate offense for the Irish (20-1-1).
She knows she has to earn her shots on goal.
'If I get the ball to my feet, I can turn and score. If I get it on top, with my speed I can beat them and score,' said Lafollette. 'I think there's various ways I've scored all season. I think that's helping me score more goals.'
Lafollette isn't thinking too much about the scoring record now as she's hoping to get the Irish back to state. PND finished third at state a year ago and this season they'd like to get to that state championship game.
'Even though we still won third place, everyone had that feeling of guilt. We wish we would have won that (semifinal) game,' Lafollette said. 'We have experience going to state. If we give it our all the whole 80 minutes, then we can pull it off.'

Center position ‘still a competition' for Tennessee ahead of 2025 football season
Tennessee practiced Tuesday at Haslam Field ahead of its first game to kick off the 2025 season on Aug. 30. The Vols will face Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia (noon EDT, ABC). Head coach Josh Heupel discussed the Vols' center competition between redshirt sophomore Sam Pendleton and redshirt freshman William Satterwhite. 'Both of those guys have competed,' Heupel said. 'Really grown here during the course of our practices. Still a competition. You're going to need both of them as we get through the fall, too.' Pendleton transferred from Notre Dame following the 2024 season. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound redshirt sophomore appeared in 16 games, including seven starts, at Notre Dame from 2023-24. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Satterwhite appeared in three contests during his first season at Tennessee in 2024. He played in games against Chattanooga, North Carolina State and Kent State. Satterwhite totaled 45 offensive snaps at center for the Vols. He was named to the 2024 SEC Academic Honor Roll. Notre Dame Names CJ Carr Its 2025 Starting Quarterback
It's CJ Carr time. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish named the aforementioned redshirt freshman and highly-touted four-star recruit as its starting quarterback for the 2025 college football season on Tuesday. Carr beat out senior Tyler Buchner, sophomores Kenny Minchey and Anthony Rezac and freshman Blake Herbert for the starting job. Carr appeared in just one game for the Fighting Irish in 2024. Notre Dame's quarterback room lost 2024 starter Riley Leonard to the 2025 NFL Draft, while Steve Angeli transferred to Syracuse, with whom he'll start next season. Carr and No. 6 Notre Dame begin the 2025 season against a pair of ranked opponents, playing No. 10 Miami (FL) on the road in Week 1 and hosting No. 19 Texas A&M – whom they defeated at College Station in Week 1 of last season – in Week 2. The Fighting Irish are coming off a 14-2 season that saw them make the College Football Playoff for the first time in four years and reach the National Championship Game. No. 6 Notre Dame names Carr starting quarterback over Minchey
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback Tuesday, ending the preseason competition with Kenny Minchey. The announcement was made on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season's run to the national championship game but has not thrown a college pass. He played in the second half of a historic 66-7 rout at Purdue last season. He was a three-time all-state quarterback in Michigan and is the son of former Michigan football player Jason Carr and the grandson of former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr. Minchey appeared in three games with the Irish in 2023 and completed both of his attempts for 12 yards. He also appeared in last year's Purdue game, completing his only pass of the season for 4 yards and rushing two times for 12 yards. He scored his first TD on a 7-yard run. Steve Angeli, Riley Leonard's top backup last season, also was in the battle during the spring. He replaced Leonard in the title game late in the first half against Penn State in the national semifinal and led the Irish to a score that helped them get back in sync. But he transferred to Syracuse after spring ball, turning the expected three-man battle into a two-man competition. Angeli was named Syracuse's starter earlier this week. Notre Dame opens the season in primetime Aug. 31 at No. 10 Miami.
