NDTV2 days ago

Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti shone brightest in the night session at Roland Garros on Sunday as he beat Holger Rune in four sets to reach the French Open last eight. Musetti bested the Danish 10th seed 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an entertaining duel that lasted three hours and 18 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. "It's incredible, yesterday night I was dreaming about playing like this. I had to raise the level as Holger is a fantastic player," said Musetti on court.
"I tried and I'm really proud of myself," he added after qualifying for the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time in his career.
The 23-year-old will next face Frances Tiafoe for a spot in the semi-finals, after the American 15th seed earlier beat Germany's Daniel Altmaier in straight sets.
Musetti has been one of the form players on clay this season, reaching at least the last four in all three of the principal warm-up events ahead of the French Open.

Lorenzo Musetti Kicks Ball At Lineswoman; Gets Warned For Unsportsmanlike Conduct At French Open: WATCH

Lorenzo Musetti got a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after accidentally hitting a linesperson with a ball during his French Open quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe. In a confusing moment, Lorenzo Musetti was warned for unsportsmanlike conduct for kicking a tennis ball that inadvertently hit a linesperson during his French Open quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday. Unlike most top-level tennis tournaments, which rely on electronic line-calling, there are still humans on court at Roland-Garros to make rulings on whether shots land in or out. The eighth-seeded Musetti, who won a bronze medal for Italy at the Paris Olympics and was a semifinalist at Wimbledon last year, had just dropped a game to trail Tiafoe 5-3 in the second set of their match at Court Philippe-Chatrier. As Musetti was given balls so he could serve in the next game, he took a left-footed swipe at one, and it flew into a female line judge making calls behind his baseline. Lorenzo Musetti received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after this incident 😳 #RolandGarros — TNT Sports (@tntsports) June 3, 2025 The chair umpire immediately announced to the crowd that Musetti was being given a warning for a code violation. There is no penalty for an initial warning of that sort. Soon, Tiafoe claimed that set. Musetti had taken the opener in the best-of-five-set match with a semifinal berth at stake. There would be no stopping the Italian as well, who would swarm Tiafoe with a plethora of sleek backhands to dominate the American, and win the endeavour 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 after over two hours and 45 minutes of battle on Court Philippe Chatrier. He next plays either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain or American Tommy Paul for a place in the final. Told by the post-match interviewer that he has an elegant game, Musetti joked: 'I mean, we are Italian. We are elegant." He is 13-4 in his French Open career, and three of those losses came against an opponent ranked No. 1 — Novak Djokovic twice, and Alcaraz once. French Open 2025: Musetti Ousts Tiafoe To Reach His First Roland Garros Semifinal

Lorenzo Musetti defeated Frances Tiafoe to reach his first French Open semifinal. The 23-year-old Italian will now face either Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul next. Lorenzo Musetti truly was the smooth operator, as the Italian defeated Frances Tiafoe to reach his first semifinal at the French Open and second at a Grand Slam tournament on Tuesday. Musetti blitzed through the American in sets of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the same stadium where he won a bronze medal at last year's Olympics, and rolled up the right sleeve of his green shirt to flex his biceps after the win. Titleholder Swiatek to face No. 1 Sabalenka in semis after 26th straight win at Roland-Garros

PARIS: Four-time champion Iga Swiatek's 26th successive win at Roland-Garros set up a French Open semifinal clash against top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday. Swiatek defeated Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5 to extend her impressive run. The consecutive wins record on the Parisian red clay is Chris Evert's 29. Having been searching for her best form in recent months, Swiatek, who struggled in the previous round, was in total control in the opening set. She was made to work harder by her 13th-seeded Ukrainian rival in the second set, dropping her serve in the fourth game after hitting two straight unforced errors into the net. But Swiatek broke back immediately and took advantage of Svitolina's poor service game to break again with a thunderous forehand return and move up 6-5. Swiatek sealed the win with a final ace. Swiatek dropped outside the top four before the French Open and has not won a title or reached a final since her victory at Roland-Garros last year. Sabalenka wins Sabalenka defeated Zheng Qinwen in straight sets to reach the semifinals for the second time. Chasing her first title at Roland-Garros, Sabalenka overcame a shaky start and windy conditions to prevail 7-6 (3), 6-3 and extend her record against the Olympic champion to 7-1. The score did not fully reflect the closeness of the quarterfinal, though, with so little separating the rivals. But Sabalenka demonstrated why she was No. 1, making the difference on big points, while Zheng struggled with her serve in tense moments. Sabalenka will try to reach her sixth Grand Slam final, and first at Roland-Garros.
