Promotion 'a day I'll never forget'

BBC News22-04-2025

Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen says winning promotion to the Premier League is an "absolutely amazing" feeling and a day he will "never forget".The 29-year-old has only missed two Championship games this season, making 42 appearances at the heart of the Clarets' midfield, including in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Monday to secure a return to the top flight."To do it with such a special group of people, not only the lads and the team-mates but the staff and everyone around the club, [I'm] just over the moon," Cullen told BBC Radio Lancashire."We always had that belief and I think, although we've played it down all season, when you looked at the fixture schedule, you thought this game could be a massive one."Obviously it turned out to be a defining one for us to get over the line. I think the run we've been on, the belief we have in ourselves, we always believed we can win games and we've got enough to score goals and defend when we have to defend."Cullen praised the atmosphere at Turf Moor and thanked the fans who have "pushed us on all year"."They've been magnificent this year and backed us the whole way. Happy to reward them and get the club back where it belongs," he said. The Ireland international was in the squad when Burnley were relegated from the Premier League in 2023-24 and said it made this promotion "especially" satisfying."It's obviously been a lot tighter this year with three - four teams with Sunderland prior - going for the two automatic spots," Cullen added."We've had to be right on our game and it's probably a little bit extra this time having experienced the pain of relegation last year."We'll enjoy this moment, that's for sure."

Steven Gerrard's demand to Liverpool chiefs after Florian Wirtz bids rejected

Liverpool are desperate to complete a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this summer but are struggling to agree on a fee - though club legend Steven Gerrard feels the club should do what it takes to get the signing done Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged his former club to do what's necessary to sign Florian Wirtz this summer, with the Reds still attempting to strike a deal with Bayer Leverkusen. The German talent is one of Europe's hottest properties after some stunning form in the Bundesliga in recent seasons. Wirtz managed 16 goals and 13 assists in all competitions as he helped Leverkusen to a second placed finish in the German top flight. ‌ Last season, his incredible displays inspired the team to their first ever Bundesliga title win as they also claimed the German Cup and reached the Europa League final. ‌ Now Liverpool look like frontrunners to sign the 22-year-old after Arne Slot held discussions with the player and convinced them Anfield was the perfect place for his future development, ahead of rivals Bayern Munich. The reigning Premier League champions now need to agree on a fee for Wirtz, with the German outfit holding out for around £125million. Liverpool have already had two bids rejected after initially offering £84 with £12.6m in bonus. After that was rejected they upped it again and tabled an overall package which totalled £109.6m, but both were ultimately knocked back reports Kicker. Now Gerrard has told Liverpool to "make it happen" after hailing him as a "big talent" who has a "huge future in front of him". Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. A big talent, who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen." ‌ Liverpool are also in the running to sign left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth after also landing right-back Jeremie Frimpong as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement. Gary Neville has weighed in on Liverpool's quest to sign Wirtz, claiming they will have a big chance of retaining their title if they can pull off the signing, along with Kerkez. "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. ‌ "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "[I'm] Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign."

Vaclav Cerny tells new Rangers owners his transfer answer as Russell Martin can revive 'important' winger deal

The winger was the stand-out performer for the Ibrox side during a disappointing campaign at Ibrox Former Rangers loanee Vaclav Cerny appears to have closed the door on the prospect of a permanent move to Ibrox this summer. The Scottish Premiership giants are in the midst of a major overhaul following the US consortium's takeover with a new manager set to be appointed. ‌ Former Southampton boss Russell Martin is the frontrunner ahead of Davide Ancelotti with a final decision expect by Rangers' powerbrokers in the coming days. ‌ But after a loan campaign that saw Cerny chip in with 18 goals and nine assists, many fans were hoping to see the Czech Republic international make a permanent move to Glasgow with reports suggesting Wolfsburg are demanding £9million for the 27-year-old. But while on international duty, the attacker appears to have put a full stop on his time in Glasgow as he confessed he left with regrets having failed to pick up silverware. He said: "I managed to play a lot of games, almost 60 in one season, which is wonderful. "I had a wonderful relationship with the fans, I think I gave them a lot of nice experiences, just like they gave me. "I'm just sorry I couldn't win anything with Rangers. But I will have very nice memories, they have a magical stadium. "Memories for my entire career and my entire life, as I wrote on my social networks. I hope I managed to bring them what has always been my thing. A lot of the goals and assists were at our home stadium. ‌ "I'm really happy that everything turned out like this. It was nice to say goodbye." However, he concedes he is not certain what the future holds for him amid reported interest from Trabzonspor: "I still have no idea where I will be playing next season. "The only thing I know is that I am returning to Wolfsburg. I have a contract there for two more years. There will be time for a club future after the national team. ‌ "I am a regular player at Wolfsburg . The club does not have a coach yet. Of course, I have some preliminary agreements, or I know what is planned for me. "I would like to get the most out of a successful season. "Contact (with Wolfsburg) has taken place, we all want to know where we stand. It has become clear what they expect from me, what I expect from them. ‌ "I have received a training plan for the summer and we are moving forward." And if Martin is appointed he could revive an alternative transfer to Rangers that collapsed last summer. ‌ Rangers missed out on the signing of Samuel Edozie in the dying embers of the window as the winger saw a move to Ibrox fall through. The 21-year-old – who was a a key contributor for the Saints in the Premier League and Championship – was expected to head to Glasgow but after the loan switch fell through would go on to have a successful loan stint at Anderlecht. Before being shown the door at St Mary's, Martin revealed he had been keeping tabs on the forward during his time in Belgium - insisting he was still involved in the "big picture" at the club. ‌ He said: "We've had different people go over and watch him. We are in constant contact, he's doing well and it's been good for him. "He's in a different environment and has a different challenge. He seems to be enjoying it. "We will keep sending people over there a bit regularly to make sure we're having a conversation. ‌ "Face-to-face contact is always better and easier. I wish I had the time to go over myself, but at the minute I haven't. "There will be a time when I do. He's an important player for us in terms of the big picture. I think this season will be really good for him." The Daily Echo reporting a major clearout is on the cards following their Premier League relegation - and Edozie will not return to Anderlecht after boss Besnik Hasi branded a deal "far too expensive." Maddy Cusack inquest should be heard by a jury, family's lawyers claim

A jury should be convened for the inquest into the death of the former Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack due to the 'significant public interest' in the case, her family's lawyers have said. Cusack died aged 27 on 20 September, 2023 at her home in Derbyshire. Within a week of her death her family had submitted a written complaint to Sheffield United outlining issues allegedly stemming from her relationship with the club's manager at the time, Jonathan Morgan. Dean Armstrong KC, representing the family, told a pre-inquest review hearing on Tuesday this was a case that should be heard by a jury. He said there was a 'clear' public interest in examining the particular position of 'young, vulnerable people' and their relationship with those holding senior positions in a sporting context. 'There continue to be significant differences between the men's game and the women's game in terms of resource and how people are dealt with,' he said. 'There is a significant public interest in examining how people conduct themselves within the women's game towards what we say are vulnerable females such as Maddy.' Jury inquests are often required when a death occurs in protective custody, and Armstrong said: 'I would draw the analogy of young, vulnerable women in football clubs in a climate of concern and fear. This is one of the first occasions in professional women's football where these issues are being addressed. I would suggest there is a fundamental need to examine what was in place to protect those vulnerable women, where the impact felt of words and deeds is potentially much greater.' Cusack's legal team also referenced findings from an as-yet-unpublished Football Association report commissioned in January 2024 into the circumstances surrounding Cusack's death. They said the report found the investigation had 'shed light on the resourcing issues particularly acute in the women's game and the related welfare and safeguarding issues that might arise'. Armstrong said: '[The] inability to report to the club contributed to Maddy's deterioration. 'There was no one to talk to, no adequate support system in place. That should be at the centre of these proceedings.' The Cusack family's lawyers also made a request for a number of additional witnesses to be called to appear at the inquest. Maria Mulla, from Maitland Chambers, said witnesses who had provided testimony in earlier investigations concerning Morgan's alleged conduct towards Cusack and other players were all 'highly relevant' and 'would enable the family to feel these matters are being explored fully, as they need to be'. Morgan, who continues to represent himself in the case, said there had been 'a lot of manipulation of information' and said some individuals had not been spoken to or had been 'cast aside' because their views 'didn't meet the narrative of what's been put out over the last 18 months'. Coroner Sophie Cartwright called for Sheffield United, the FA and Morgan to provide written submissions in response to the family's representatives' calls for a jury, a widening of the inquest scope and for additional witnesses by 17 June. The family's representatives will then have a further seven days to make observations on those submissions, with the coroner saying she would make a determination on those matters by 1 July. No date has been set for the inquest itself.
