Canadians encouraged to check home insurance coverage on National Insurance Awareness Day Français
TORONTO, June 26, 2025 /CNW/ - June 28 marks the third annual National Insurance Awareness Day in Canada, which is recognized by the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations (CISRO), a national coalition of insurance regulators. On this day, Canadians are encouraged to take time to review their insurance policies and engage in dialogue with their licensed insurance professionals to ensure they have the right coverage for their homes and property.
Insurance provides security by helping people in recovering from losses caused by events such as damage, illness, or death. However, many people underestimate the value of their personal belongings, property, or the cost to rebuild their home when filing an insurance claim. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your home insurance coverage is adequate to fully protect your property.
"With National Insurance Awareness Day on June 28, Canadians are reminded to review their insurance policies periodically throughout the year to remain up to date. Do they have sufficient coverage to support their resilient recovery if a loss occurs?" says Louise Gauthier, CISRO Chair. "Our goal is for every Canadian to feel well protected. That's why we encourage everyone to use this opportunity to review their insurance coverage."
Considerations when reviewing or buying home insurance policies:
Have there been any lifestyle changes that might require a review of your insurance policy?
Has there been a change in value, a sale, or accumulation of items since the last time you looked at your policy?
Has there been any work (e.g. finishing the basement) or economic realities that could lead to an increase in the cost to rebuild or replace your property (for example, current replacements or rebuilding costs)?
The sale of insurance is regulated in Canada. Insurance salespersons, agents, brokers, and adjusters must be licensed to conduct insurance business. A licensed insurance professional can provide you with expertise and advice to ensure you have risk protection for what matters most.
You can make sure you are dealing with a licensed salesperson, agent, broker, agency or firm by looking up their name and licence status on your local provincial or territorial regulator's website.

Canadian securities regulators propose prohibiting the use of chargebacks in the distribution of investment funds Français
, June 26, 2025 /CNW/ - The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has published, for a 90-day comment period, proposed amendments that would prohibit the use of chargebacks in the distribution of investment funds offered by prospectus. Dealers or dealing representatives sometimes receive an upfront commission or payment when their client purchases securities. Chargebacks occur when clients redeem their securities before a fixed schedule, and the dealing representative is required to pay back all or part of the upfront commission or payment. The CSA is concerned that the use of chargebacks poses an inherent significant conflict of interest as they may incentivize advisors to prioritize their own financial interest over that of their clients. "Prohibiting the use of chargebacks in the distribution of investment fund securities can further align investment advice with a client's best interest," said Stan Magidson, CSA Chair and Chair and CEO of the Alberta Securities Commission. "The proposed amendments prioritize investor protection and foster fairer compensation practices." The proposed amendments are in alignment with the 2025-2028 CSA Business Plan. Under the Business Plan, the CSA will propose and enact regulatory amendments, or other regulations, to ban chargebacks in the distribution of investment fund securities, not solely mutual funds, to improve investor protection and maintain investor confidence in Canadian capital markets. The proposed amendments are available on CSA members' websites. The comment period closes on September 24, 2025. The CSA, the council of the securities regulators of Canada's provinces and territories, co-ordinates and harmonizes regulation for the Canadian capital markets. The existing New Construction stream is now subdivided into two dedicated sub-streams: a Rapid Housing sub-stream to create shelters, supportive and transitional housing for those in greatest need, and a Community Housing sub-stream to support affordable and mixed-market housing where there are both affordable and market-rent units in a project. The Repair and Renewal stream, has replaced minimum requirements with an approach where projects supporting accessibility and energy efficiency will be prioritized. Greener Affordable Housing (CGAH) is providing $1.2 billion to make multi-unit rental housing serving low- and moderate-income households more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Ottawa eyeing Ukrainian partnership, EU loans for defence equipment, minister says
OTTAWA – Defence Minister David McGuinty says the federal government is weighing whether to follow in the footsteps of several European nations by forging a new defence co-production deal with Ukraine for military equipment. McGuinty says the idea is under 'active consideration' by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. Ukraine has become a world leader in combat drone technology over the course of its war with Russia, and countries such as the U.K. and Denmark have announced plans for co-operative equipment production projects with Kyiv. McGuinty made the comments while speaking to Canadian reporters on a call from the embassy in Riga, Latvia, capping off his trip to Europe this week. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a massive new defence spending commitment at the NATO summit in The Hague this week and said in Brussels that Canada and the European Union will negotiate a new security and defence procurement partnership. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. McGuinty says Canada needs to be able to leverage European loans through that partnership and that his government intends to join up with European nations on bulk purchasing — something he says will save money on defence procurement.
