Wigan 1-2 Fulham: Muniz at the double as Cottagers edge through

BBC News08-02-2025

Fulham travelled to the Brick Community Stadium having exited the FA Cup fourth round in four of the previous five seasons, and they needed to survive a late Wigan onslaught to avoid another early exit on Saturday. The Cottagers dominated the first half and should perhaps have led by more than Rodrigo Muniz's header at the break.A second Fulham goal seemed only a matter of time early in the second half, but Jonny Smith's stunning strike - Wigan's first shot on target - changed the complexion of the tie.Muniz restored the visitors' advantage not long afterwards, but Wigan soon regrouped and went close to a second equaliser when Ronan Darcy curled a shot wide from the edge of the box.Issa Diop almost put through his own net and Scott Smith forced a fine save out of Steven Benda, before Darcy had a late goal ruled out for offside. In the end, Fulham held on by the skin of their teeth to confirm their place in the fifth round.

Palace chief 'sets price' to sell stake as club sweat on Europa League fate

Crystal Palace shareholder John Textor is ready to offload his stake in the Londoners in order to ensure they are able to compete in the Europa League next season John Textor is said to be prepared to sell his stake in Crystal Palace for less than market value in a bid to ensure that the FA Cup winners are able to compete in the Europa League next season. The American, 59, holds a 43 per cent stake in Palace via Eagle Football Holdings but the company also holds a stake in Lyon, who have also qualified for Europe next term. Textor's involvement at both clubs has led to scrutiny from UEFA, who are set to rule on whether or not the Eagles can feature in the competition later this month. ‌ Textor and Steve Parish, the Palace chairman, met with Uefa officials last week in a bid to persuade them that the former's 25 per cent voting rights means he is not, in fact, a person of influence at Selhurst Park. ‌ But with Palace still facing the threat of missing out on Europe altogether it has now emerged that Textor is willing to offload his stake in the club for a lower price. The Times report that Textor offloading his stake is seen as the most viable way to resolve the matter with a potential sale to his Palace cohorts a possibility. American co-owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer have matching 18 per cent stakes and a sale to them, if viable, is seen as the 'simplest outcome' for all parties. The report adds that sources close to Textor feel the outlined price of £170million is significantly less than he would stand to recoup otherwise given the club's current market value. Textor's involvement at both Palace and Lyon has caused unrest in the Premier League, too, in light of Uefa's recent meeting over the former's Europa League fate. ‌ It emerged earlier this week that Nottingham Forest have written to the authorities to express concern given the multi-club ownership rules that are in place. Forest would stand to profit if Palace were expelled from the Europa League; they are currently set to participate in the Europa Conference League as a reward for their stellar 2024-25 campaign, where they finished seventh in the Premier League. Even if Textor is successful in selling his stake there are concerns that the case could make its way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, further muddying the waters surrounding Palace and their fate. Textor did attempt to put his shares into blind a trust to enable Palace to compete in Europe next season - an act other club chiefs have done - but Uefa ruled their attempts were too late, citing a deadline of March 1.

Tierney makes claim about Celtic dressing room upon return

The left-back completed a then-record-breaking move to Arsenal in 2019. Tierney went on to make 144 appearances for the North London outfit, winning an FA Cup and two Community Shields. Read more: He also spent a year on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad in the midst of his Arsenal tenure. In Tierney's eyes, such experiences will only aid Celtic upon his return to the club. He said [Celtic TV]: "That's probably the biggest difference in me now as a player is, six years on, I'm wiser, I've learned a lot more, I've been in different situations at different clubs. "So hopefully, the experience I can bring can help the changing room." Tierney revealed after resigning at Parkhead that throughout his spell down south, there were previous failed attempts to bring him back to Glasgow: "It was perfect timing for everybody," he said. "It had been in the works before, but it wasn't able to happen. "This time, everything just fell into place. I spoke with the manager, obviously, I worked with him before, and I've always kept in touch with him. He's one of the best, and I'm so lucky and grateful that he's given me the chance to come back. "I'm a different person, 100 per cent. When you move away from home, you grow up, you learn different things. I was away in Spain for a year, I learned a different language, learned a different league, so I'm definitely a different person. Player-wise, I'll say, like I always say, I'll try and work my hardest and do my best for the club."

Jack Grealish left out of Manchester City's Club World Cup squad

Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. The England international was not included in the 27-man travelling party published by the Premier League club on Wednesday. The 29-year-old's omission had been widely anticipated and will raise further doubts over his future at the Etihad Stadium. The midfielder, signed for £100million from Aston Villa four years ago, has fallen down the pecking order at City since playing a starring role in their treble success of 2023. He made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024-25 campaign and was notably not summoned from the bench as City went down to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last month. He was then left out of the matchday squad for the final Premier League game of the season at Fulham altogether. With City's overhaul of the squad continuing apace with four new signings this week, there is growing speculation Grealish could leave. He has been linked with a number of clubs in England and in Europe. Your City travelling squad for the @FIFACWC 📋🔒 #TakeItToTheWorld 🌍 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 11, 2025 As expected, Kevin De Bruyne will also not be involved in this summer's tournament in the United States. The Belgian playmaker is leaving City this summer but could still have played before his contract expires on June 30. The 33-year-old looks set to join Serie A champions Napoli when he officially becomes a free agent. New signings Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli are all included in Pep Guardiola's squad, which could have featured up to 35 names. There will be an opportunity to register more players for the knockout stages should City progress that far. City begin their campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Wednesday before facing further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus.
