Gary Lineker shows Palestine support just hours after leaving BBC

Yahoo26-05-2025

Gary Lineker embraced his first day of post-BBC freedom by defiantly sharing a poem of support for Palestine which includes a George Orwell quotation.
Lineker shared a verse by Nikita Gill, who had been expressing heartbreak for paediatrician Alaa al Najjar after her nine children were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Just hours after leaving the Match of the Day studios for the last time, Lineker shared Gill's poem on his Instagram story between tributes after his BBC goodbye.
The verse shared by Lineker said: 'A mother on duty caring for her patients receives the remains of nine of her children. We are told to ignore this.
'A child who can barely walk struggles to find safety through flames in the aftermath of a bomb, unable to breathe. We are told to ignore this.'
It then ends with a quote from Orwell which says: 'The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.'
The verse ends with: 'We must refuse to abdicate our duty to each other and see the truth for what is before us.'
Lineker had been left wiping away tears on Sunday night after a star-studded montage paid tribute to his 26 years as Match of the Day's anchor. He explained on his Rest is Football podcast, however, that it was the sight of his sons talking about him on the video that had left him weeping.
'Thankfully, that wasn't the last clip, because I'd gone at that point,' he explained. 'I needed time to to get myself together, to try and get through the the end of the show.'
Lineker will lose out on an estimated £800,000 after being forced to leave without a pay-off. Sources close to the corporation say the decision to drop him was made primarily by BBC chiefs who had run out of patience with his outspoken political views.
During his emotional goodbye on Sunday, Lineker said the show is now 'in the best of hands' as Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman replace him next season.
Pep Guardiola, Virgil Van Dyke, Paul Gascoigne, Peter Shilton and Alan Hansen joined the likes of Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on a special montage celebrating his career on the show.
Lineker, who was handed a cap and a golden boot as goodbye gifts, composed himself to make a typically wry summary of his stint as the BBC's top sports anchor. 'Rather like my football career, everyone else did all the hard work, and I got the plaudits,' he said as he signed off.
He added: 'It's been an absolute privilege to have hosted Match of the Day for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous. I'd like to wish Gabby, Mark and Kelly all the very best when they sit in this chair. The programme is in the best of hands.'

Claudio Ranieri, Guy Mowbray, Alan Smith and Ian Wright also appeared on a special video paying tribute to Lineker's career. Opening credits had also been adapted with some of Lineker's most famous goal-scoring moments.Lineker had opened his last show with a wry remark about the furore surrounding him in recent weeks. 'It wasn't meant to end this way,' he said, before adding 'but with the title race over and the relegation places confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about.'
Lineker's final show had remained a significant point of contention behind the scenes in recent days but the programme has a history of paying tribute to departing stars. There were emotional send-offs for Alan Hansen while Ian Wright was presented with a cap during his final appearance last year. For Lineker, however, tribute planning was not straightforward.
A host of Jewish members of BBC staff and television executives elsewhere have spoken of their anger that he was granted a chance to say goodbye after sharing a social-media post featuring anti-Semitic imagery. Leo Pearlman, chief executive at Fulwell Entertainment, and Danny Cohen, former director of BBC Television, have said Lineker does not deserve a 'swansong'.
The latest controversy was set in motion a fortnight ago when the Match of the Day presenter used Instagram to promote a pro-Palestinian video featuring a rat emoji – an icon used by the Nazis as a slur against Jewish people.
Lineker apologised and removed the video but calls to remove him from the BBC grew louder when Telegraph Sport published an explosive interview with Lineker in which he went further than ever in his comments about Israel and also criticised his boss at the BBC.
It was confirmed at noon last Monday that this Sunday's Match of the Day would be Lineker's last BBC outing. Lineker, who has hosted Match of the Day since 1999, issued an unreserved apology for the 'hurt and upset caused' by the video, stating it was a 'genuine mistake'.

Love Island's Georgia Harrison: 'I re-read my MBE letter three times'

The sexual abuse campaigner and former reality star Georgia Harrison has told the BBC she is "honoured" to be receiving an MBE. Harrison, 30, will be awarded for her efforts to tackle violence against women and girls, which includes working with the government on the Online Safety Act in 2023. She says she feels "a responsibility to help" the many women who are victims of crimes such as intimate image abuse and deepfaking. Her ex-partner Stephen Bear was jailed for 21 months in 2023 after uploading sexual footage of himself and Harrison to OnlyFans filmed without her consent. Harrison, who is being awarded her MBE as part of the King's Birthday Honours, said she had to re-read the letter she received from King Charles "three times" as she "just couldn't believe it". "It's definitely not something I anticipated and it feels nice to have my work recognised because with campaigning sometimes you feel like a lot goes unnoticed," she told the BBC. The former reality star appeared on ITV shows such as The Only Way is Essex in 2017 and Love Island in 2018, where she entered the villa as a bombshell and gained nationwide fame. It was during 2019 that she entered MTV's The Challenge, where she met fellow reality star Bear. The pair dated on and off for a few months, with Harrison discovering in December 2020 that the now 35-year-old Bear had uploaded intimate CCTV footage of them to streaming service OnlyFans without her consent. She subsequently reported the crime and Bear was sentenced after being found guilty of voyeurism and discussing private, sexual photographs and films. Harrison was then awarded compensation in a damages claim and said she would donate some of the £207,900 to charity. She says she often feels a "responsibility to help" as she worries about the increase of social media influencers fuelling misogyny and sexism. Harrison, who is currently expecting her first child, said: "I'd be scared to have a teenager right now, being completely honest, I really would be terrified". "We've seen with the rise of Andrew Tate and some men thinking the thing to do with women is to mistreat them and think they can do what they want with them," she said. She added she feels the need to let women know, "they deserve to be treated fairly, they deserve consent and the right to their own bodies". A recent poll of teachers in the UK found three in five believe social media use has had a negative effect on behaviour in schools - with Tate being named as a reason by a number of teachers in the poll. Harrison says she has been into some schools recently to watch consent workshops with primary school age children, describing them as "brilliant". She hopes that these type of lessons will have an impact for the next generation. "I'd like to think by the time my child gets to the age where consent becomes an issue, things are going to be a lot better, because we are doing something to educate around consent and that's something that's never really been done before in this generation," she added. Harrison says "on a positive note" women have told her case and "the strength you found" has encouraged them to take their perpetrators to court for causes of rape, domestic abuse and intimate image abuse. Since Bear's conviction in 2022, she has campaigned to increase the support for women and girls who have faced similar crimes to her by working on the Online Safety Act and as part of the Women and Equalities Committee. She says she has been working with the committee on improving timescales for women who want to report crimes against them - as currently they only have six months after a crime has taken place to tell the police about it. "It took me about four months to even realise a crime had been committed to me when it happened so its scary to think, had I been notified a few months later, I may not have had the right to justice. "It should be a lot easier for women out there," she added. Harrison says she has also been receiving more and more messages from victims of deepfakes, which are videos, pictures or audio clips made with AI to look or sound real. There have been recent concerns about schoolchildren using apps to distribute AI-generated deepfake content, despite the practice being illegal. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) - a UK-based charity partly funded by tech firms - said in February there had been 245 reports of AI-generated child sexual abuse in 2024 compared with 51 in 2023, a 380% increase. "I think [deepfake] technology is getting a lot more impressive and easier to access," Harrison said. Earlier this year, the government announced laws to tackle the threat of child sexual abuse images being generated by AI, which include making it illegal to possess, create, or distribute AI tools designed to create such material. Claudia Winkleman ‘incredibly grateful' for MBE in King's Birthday Honours

TV presenter Claudia Winkleman has said she is 'incredibly grateful' to have been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's Birthday Honours. The Traitors presenter was honoured on Friday alongside her Strictly Come Dancing co-host, Tess Daly, for services to broadcasting. Winkleman, 53, said: 'I am incredibly grateful to receive this honour. 'It's a real privilege to work with extraordinarily talented people and I have only got this because of them. So this is for the BBC, the traitors and the faithful, for pianos and for the cha cha. 'I will buy a hat and am taking my mum. I am ridiculously lucky and will celebrate with Tess by doing a paso doble.' Born and raised in London, she studied history of art at Cambridge University and after graduating began her career as a TV and radio presenter, fronting a range of BBC TV shows including Comic Relief and The Great British Sewing Bee. She also presented on BBC Radio 2 until 2024, hosting different programmes on the station including the comedy quiz series Hot Gossip, the Claudia Winkleman Arts Show and Claudia On Sunday. In 2004, she joined BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, presenting its weekday companion show It Takes Two until she passed it to broadcaster Zoe Ball, with her taking on the Sunday night results show alongside Daly. The presenter joined Daly for the main show every Saturday from 2014, after Sir Bruce Forsyth stepped down. The Bafta-winning presenter is also behind the hit BBC game show The Traitors and won best entertainment performance at the 2023 awards. She will be fronting its charity spin-off series, The Celebrity Traitors, in which 19 famous faces will enter the castle in the Highlands, including comedian Alan Carr, actor and broadcaster Sir Stephen Fry and retired diver Tom Daley. Stephen Lambert, who is also recognised in the King's Birthday Honours and is the founder and chief executive of Studio Lambert, said: 'I'm thrilled that Claudia Winkleman is being honoured too; her brilliant hosting has played such a key role in the success of The Traitors.' Studio Lambert is the production company behind The Traitors, Gogglebox, Race Across the World, and Squid Game: The Challenge. Winkleman hosts the Channel 4 general knowledge gameshow One Question, where she recently described wanting to cry after a father and daughter won £100,000, making history on the programme for winning the top prize without looking at all of the possible answers. She also presents Channel 4's The Piano, in which she is joined by singer-songwriter Mika and Grammy-winner Jon Batiste, as they hunt for Britain's most talented undiscovered pianists. She will host a concert for this year's BBC Proms, including a matinee and evening Traitors-themed performance, which is expected to have a range of famous classical works, alongside new arrangements of some of the music from the popular psychological reality programme. Winkleman is a trustee of the The British Museum and a patron of Child Bereavement UK.

'Bridgerton''s Genevieve Chenneour Breaks Her Silence on 'Life-Changing' London Robbery, Recalls 'Battle' of 'Life and Death'

Genevieve Chenneour has spoken out four months after she was the victim of an attempted robbery in a London coffee shop On ITV's This Morning, the 27-year-old actress revealed she was "threatened with being stabbed, so it became a real battle of, in my mind, life and death" The suspect was later identified as 18-year-old Zacariah Boulares, who is currently facing theft and assault chargesBridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour is speaking out months after her phone was stolen and her life was threatened in a London coffee shop. Chenneour was in a Joe & the Juice in London in February when her phone was stolen off the table behind her and she pursued the robber to get it back, according to footage obtained by BBC. The 27-year-old actress, who played Clara Livingston in season 3 of the hit Netflix series, said that the altercation became a matter of "life and death" in her mind during a June 12 interview on ITV's This Morning. On the morning show, Chenneour said she was "shocked" when she first saw the surveillance camera footage from inside the cafe of the attack. "I didn't even remember my reaction and I thought it was way longer than it actually was. That moment before anything happened, I thought it was about 20 seconds, but it was milliseconds," she recalled. She said that had 'a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right" in the moments before the suspect — who was identified as 18-year-old Zacariah Boulares and is expected to be sentenced over theft and assault charges at Isleworth Crown Court on June 17, per the BBC — attempted the robbery. "As a woman you have that kind of intuition, and I could feel people moving around me in a different way, but I only became aware of it once the incident had happened, in hindsight," she said of her quick reaction to the theft. "But I did feel — they were going back and forth trying to find a target,' she added. In the surveillance footage, Chenneour reacted quickly to Boulares' theft, spinning around and trying to get the phone back from him while another customer helped her. She said on This Morning that there was "about five minutes" of an altercation that followed "and it turned into a full-on scrap with two people." "I was threatened with being stabbed, so it became a real battle of, in my mind, life and death. So I did things, like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him," she recalled. "It was just a life-changing, crazy moment.' Given the incident happened in February, she said it has lasting consequences for her, as it "made me quite agoraphobic." "Leaving the house was quite hard," she admitted. When asked what made her instantly react and fight back after she noticed her phone was taken, the actress said she has "very quick reactions thanks to having three brothers growing up," and also revealed that she's trained in boxing, which helped too. "I don't know what came over me. I thought that was a normal reaction," she said. "And then I read all the comments and realized, actually, a lot of people would just let them take the phone."
