Man fined RM10,000 over offensive TikTok post on KL Tower workers' issue
KUALA LUMPUR: A man was fined RM10,000 for posting offensive content involving racial and religious sentiments related to the Kuala Lumpur Tower workers' issue on TikTok on March 31.
In a statement today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the fine was imposed on Mohamad Shafiq Abdul Halim after receiving approval for compound action from the Attorney General's Chambers.
The investigation was conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which prohibits the improper use of network facilities or services, including the transmission of obscene, indecent, false, threatening, or offensive communications.
MCMC urged all social media users to act responsibly and ethically when uploading or sharing content, stressing that distributing offensive material, especially content that could offend sensitivities related to religion, race, or royal institutions, would be subject to strict action.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the nation's cyberspace remains safe, orderly, and harmonious, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity within Malaysia's multiracial society.

We only act on formal complaints, MCMC tells Rafizi
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission deputy managing director Zurkarnain Yasin said the regulator only acts on verified complaints in accordance with the law. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it does not act on its own initiative but only investigates cases after receiving formal complaints. This comes after Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli earlier today questioned the internet regulator and police over their response to social media comments about PKR's recent party elections. Rafizi claimed that several netizens who commented on the polls alleged that they were approached by MCMC and police officers, had their phones and SIM cards seized, and were even notified that they were under investigation, despite, in his view, posting nothing more than personal opinions. Responding to the matter, MCMC deputy managing director Zurkarnain Yasin said the commission's actions are guided by existing laws and regulatory frameworks and, thus, probes cannot be initiated arbitrarily. 'All actions taken by the MCMC must be based on verified information and are subject to legal provisions, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,' he told FMT. 'This ensures that enforcement activities are carried out fairly, transparently, and within the scope of its statutory mandate.'

Brunei employer fined RM115,000 for unpaid wages to a domestic helper since 2008
Image from The Star/Asia News Network BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A local man was ordered to pay a total fine of BND35,200 (RM115,000) or face 98 weeks' imprisonment by the Magistrate's Court for failing to pay his domestic helper's salary since 2008. 59-year-old Awang Aji bin Eya pleaded guilty to 98 charges before Magistrate Syaffina Shahif on May 21. The court imposed a BND200 fine for each of the first 20 charges, in default one week's imprisonment for each, and a BND400 fine for each of the remaining 78 charges, also in default one week's imprisonment for each. The first 20 charges were framed under the now-repealed Section 108(1) of the former Labour Act, punishable under Section 120(b) of the same Act, for offences committed before September 3, 2009. The remaining 78 charges were under Section 39(1) of the Employment Order, carrying penalties under Section 148 of the same legislation. The case involved the non-payment of the domestic helper's wages from 2008, despite being employed since 2000. The court, invoking Section 130 of the Labour Act and Section 140 of the Employment Order, further ordered that BND20,433 of the fine be paid to the domestic helper, representing the total sum of unpaid wages owed. The defendant was given until February 3, 2026, to make full payment, failing which he will have to serve the default custodial sentence of 98 weeks' imprisonment. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
