Pakistan to launch new remote-sensing satellite from China
The launching, according SUPARCO, will mark a significant advancement in Pakistan's space programme, enhancing Earth observation and supporting diverse national applications.
SUPARCO highlighted that the satellite would aid precision agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, urban planning, and regional development.

It said that the satellite will also strengthen disaster management systems by providing timely alerts for floods, landslides, and earthquakes.
Additionally, it will monitor environmental changes such as glacier recession and deforestation, while mapping transportation networks and identifying geo-hazard risks.
In a statement, SUPARCO said, 'The launch of this remote sensing satellite, alongside its integration with Pakistan's existing fleet - including PRSS-1 (launched July 2018) and EO-1 (launched January 2025) - will enhance the nation's space-based infrastructure in line with the National Space Policy and SUPARCO's Vision 2047, aiming to position Pakistan as a regional leader in space technology and innovation.'
The satellite's advanced data acquisition capabilities under varied environmental conditions make it an important tool for environmental monitoring and resource management.
Pakistan has made notable progress in its space research efforts in recent months.
Earlier this year, China launched Pakistan's indigenously developed Electro-Optical satellite EO-1 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, aimed at disaster prediction and resource management.
In November last year, SUPARCO revealed plans to send its lunar rover as part of China's Chang'E 8 mission slated for 2028.
Moreover, in May 2024, Pakistan launched its first lunar satellite aboard China's Chang'E-6 probe, targeting the moon's far side - a feat China pioneered.

Pak, China for aligning ties in nuclear energy
Pakistan and China on Monday held talks on aligning their cooperation in nuclear energy and space research with broader development goals. The development came as Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal met with China Atomic Energy Authority and China's Space Agency Chairman Shan Zhongde. "The meeting focused on aligning cooperation in nuclear energy and space research with broader national development goals," a statement said. Iqbal acknowledged that China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has played a vital role in removing bottlenecks in Pakistan's infrastructure and energy sectors. He noted that collaboration between Pakistan and China in the nuclear energy sector continues to grow. The K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear power plants stand as shining examples of this strategic cooperation. Speaking on the impacts of climate change, the minister stressed the urgent need to adopt alternative energy sources. He noted that climate change has compelled the world to explore alternative energy avenues to address vulnerabilities in food security, water, healthcare, agriculture, mineral resources and other key sectors of the economy. He said under the leadership and vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan's space programme has gained new momentum. Highlighting the "Uraan Pakistan" initiative, he maintained that special focus was being given to advancing space sciences. Recently, he said, Pakistan successfully launched three satellites with China's cooperation, adding "Pakistan is set to send its first astronaut to the Chinese space station in 2026." Iqbal also shared that Pakistan's space agency, SUPARCO, has been tasked with launching a lunar mission by 2035. He emphasised that Pakistan possessed a pool of highly skilled human resources at a relatively low cost, which China could benefit from by enhancing their capabilities through collaboration. The minister highlighted that Pakistan has established a Quantum Computing Center in response to emerging technological challenges. He stressed the importance of strengthening research partnership and knowledge exchange between CAEC, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, for the peaceful use of technology. The minister noted that the government has initiated a national programme to align science, technology, and engineering sectors with Pakistan's development goals. He emphasized the need to expand opportunities for young Pakistani scientists to receive higher education in space technology through Chinese exchange programs. Chairman Zhongde appreciated Iqbal's valuable contributions to the progress of CPEC. He said Pakistan and China enjoyed strong geo-strategic relations which have now evolved into deep-rooted economic cooperation. He affirmed that China was ready to extend full cooperation to Pakistan in the field of space research, adding both countries were committed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Senate panel voices concerns over KCR revival delays
The Senate Standing Committee on Railways has raised concerns over encroachments on railway land, the growing burden of pension payments, delays in the revival of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR), and challenges surrounding the ML-1 project, in a meeting chaired by Senator Jam Saifullah Dharejo. Committee members including Senator Nasir Mehmood, Senator Asad Qasim, and Senator Dost Mohammad Khan were also in attendance. The committee visited the Divisional Superintendent (DS) office of Pakistan Railways, at the City Station where DS Mehmoodur Rehman Lakho gave a briefing on the operational, financial, and land-related challenges facing the department. Railway officials noted that the organisation is grappling with outdated infrastructure, limited financial resources, and declining revenues, with these issues not only affecting day-to-day services but also hampering progress on expansion projects. Further, they noted that a significant portion of the budget is being consumed by rising pension obligations, impacting development. The committee was informed that a strategy is being formulated to enhance the security of railway operations nationwide, with particular focus on the Karachi to Hyderabad section. Steps are also being taken to modernise surveillance systems, strengthen coordination with law enforcement, and reinforce the security framework, ensuring the safe movement of passengers and freight. Speaking to the media, Dharejo described the encroachment of railway land and the prolonged delay in the KCR revival as major challenges, but noted that discussions are ongoing with the government to reintegrate the KCR project, along with its inclusion in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The committee chairman also provided updates on recent consultations with Chinese companies regarding the ML-1 project, the country's largest and most expensive rail infrastructure initiative.

OGDCL announces oil discovery in Sindh
Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) made an oil discovery at the exploratory well Chakar–1, located in District Tando Allah Yar, Sindh. It made the announcement in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) today. The discovery was made along with its joint venture partner Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) with 5% carried interest, the notice said. OGDCL discovers hydrocarbon reserves in Sindh 'Chakar–1 was spudded on June 02, 2025, as an exploratory well under the Tando Allah Yar Exploration License and drilled down to a total depth of 1,926 meters into the Upper Shale of the Lower Goru Formation,' the notice read. Based on the interpretation of wireline logs and Reservoir Evaluation Services (RES) log, Drill Stem Test (DST) was carried out in the B-Sand, followed by testing with an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP), said OGDCL. It added that the well flowed 275 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) through a 32/64' choke at a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 400 psi. 'Furthermore, during formation testing using RES, oil was encountered in the Lower Ranikot formation. A second DST/ESP is now being conducted to further assess its hydrocarbon potential.' The listed company shared that this marks the 13th discovery in the TAY E.L and reflects the joint venture's sustained efforts to assess and unlock the hydrocarbon potential of the block. 'The results to date reinforce confidence in the geological prospectivity of the area and support ongoing exploration and appraisal efforts to further delineate its resource base.' On June 12, the OGDCL along with its partner Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), successfully discovered natural gas and condensate reserves at an exploratory well named Faakir-1, located in Khairpur district, Sindh. Last year, OGDCL discovered natural gas reserves at Shahu-1 well located in the district of Khairpur, Sindh.
