Packers add safety post-Omar Brown injury

The Green Bay Packers announced on Monday that they have made a pair of roster moves, in part because of safety Omar Brown's lung injury that left him in the hands of Indianapolis doctors for several days. With Brown, Xavier McKinney and Zayne Anderson injured at safety, the Packers added 2024 fifth-round pick safety Jaylin Simpson to their roster today. Simpson, who ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash in the pre-draft process, was a first-team All-SEC in his final year of college at Auburn. Originally picked by the Indianapolis Colts, he was moved from his natural position of safety to cornerback during his rookie offseason. He was waived by the team near roster cutdowns and re-signed with the Colts' practice squad shortly after. In December of 2024, Simpson was poached by the New York Jets to their 53-man roster. He was waived by the Jets on August 2nd with an injury designation, a week before the New York-Green Bay preseason matchup. Simpson was released from the injured reserve with an injury settlement on August 6th. Since then, he's had workouts with the Houston Texans (August 11th), Baltimore Ravens (12th) and Packers (13th). Simpson now joins Evan Williams, Javon Bullard, Kitan Oladapo and Johnathan Baldwin as the team's healthy safeties. Beyond the addition of Simpson, the Packers also signed defensive tackle Devonte O'Malley, whom Green Bay originally worked out on August 6th. O'Malley is an explosive but undersized defensive tackle from Northern Illinois who gives the Packers a change-up from their usual reserve defensive tackles in Nazir Stackhouse and Warren Brinson, who are nose tackles. In corresponding roster moves, the Packers have released cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr. and waived defensive tackle Keith Randolph with an injury designation. Randolph will revert to Green Bay's injured reserve if he clears waivers. From there, he will likely receive an injury settlement from the team.

Packers Linked to Possible Micah Parsons Trade By NFL Insider

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Green Bay Packers had a relatively quiet NFL offseason. After entering the offseason with high expectations of making a splash move, the team signed both offensive lineman Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs. Those two moves were solid, but they weren't the game-changing addition that many Packers fans were hoping to see. Could general manager Brian Gutekunst still be looking to make that kind of a move? One potential option might have become available. Photo byMicah Parsons has publicly requested a trade from the Dallas Cowboys. While it is unclear whether or not Jerry Jones will give in to that trade request, he could be on the market for the right price. Read more: Packers Receive Brutal Injury Update Regarding Offensive Weapon With that in mind, one NFL insider has connected Green Bay as a potential trade destination for Parsons. During an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show," NFL insider Ian Rapoport named the Packers as a possible team that would have interest in Parsons. "I would expect that the Packers would be among the teams interested," Rapoport said. "That's the kind of team that I would say, if Micah was going to be traded, that he'd be going to." Green Bay would be a very interesting destination for Parsons. First and foremost, the Packers have a need for more pass rushing. Rashan Gary is capable of being a top-tier pass rusher, but consistency has been a problem. Lukas Van Ness has a ton of potential, but it hasn't made its way to the field yet. Adding a player like Parsons would help Green Bay jump into elite Super Bowl contender status. However, he would not come cheap and the Packers are not known for making aggressive all-in moves for outside talent. Read more: NFL World Buzzing About What Bears QB Caleb Williams Just Did During the 2024-25 NFL season with the Cowboys, Parsons dealt with some injury issues and played in 13 games. He recorded 43 total tackles to go along with 12 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a defended back. Back in 2023 in a full 17-game season, he totaled 64 tackles, 14 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two defended passes. Will Green Bay actually try to make a move for Parsons? That remains to be seen. But Rapoport certainly seems to think they're a possibility. For more on the Green Bay Packers and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
