7 biggest takeaways from Patriots third open OTAs practice
The New England Patriots are holding their final week of organized team activities (OTAs), which means Monday was their final open OTAs practice for media members.
As with last week, the hope coming into this practice was to see improvements on the offensive side of the ball. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye cleaned up the turnovers last week, but the offense still sputtered in a head-to-head battle with the Patriots' defense.
Could they put together a better showing in their final outing in front of media cameras before the break? Also, would we get our first glimpse at four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs on the field with Maye and the rest of the offense?
Here are the biggest takeaways from the Patriots' third open OTAs practice:
Attendance report
The Patriots had multiple key players out for Monday's practice, including wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, cornerback Carlton Davis III and linebacker Anfernee Jennings.
They also had several players limited at the practice, including wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Ja'Lynn Polk, along with offensive guard Mike Onwenu, rookie center Jared Wilson and tight end Austin Hooper.
Stefon Diggs arrives at practice
Media members got their first look at four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs on the practice field with the Patriots on Monday. Diggs missed last week's open OTAs practice, but he was the biggest storyline for all of the wrong reasons after a video of him at a boat party went viral.
He greeted media members before jogging onto the field as a limited participant at practice.
Diggs could be seen running routes and practicing high-catching the ball on the sidelines with second-year wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk. The hope is to get him up to speed so that he's ready to go by the start of the season.
It's impressive how far he's come already as a 31-year-old receiver coming off a torn ACL injury from last season.
Drake Maye finds his rhythm
It really would seem like the third time was the charm for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who had his best practice through all three of the open OTAs practices so far. He went 14-of-16 passing in the competitive 11-on-11s period with one of the incompletions being an intended throwaway.
Backup Josh Dobbs also had a strong day by going 11-of-13 passing, while rookie quarterback Ben Wooldridge went 4-of-8 with one interception.
It's crazy what a couple of weeks can do after the doom and gloom talk following Maye's four-interception performance at the first open OTAs practice in May. If anything, his performance on Monday should serve as a reminder that the offense is still a work in progress with a new coordinator in Josh McDaniels pulling the strings.
Injury watch on defense
Patriots veteran linebacker Jahlani Tavai went down with an apparent leg injury during 11-on-11s. Teammates surrounded Tavai and knelt down next to him after the injury, before he was helped off the field by safety Jabrill Peppers.
Tavai didn't return to practice, and he was seen limiting the pressure he was putting on his right leg.
The Patriots have stockpiled talent at linebacker in the offseason with the additions of Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens in free agency. They also re-signed veteran linebacker Christian Elliss to a two-year extension.
Time will tell if Tavai's injury is serious enough for him to miss time.
Undrafted WR continues to shine for Patriots
Undrafted rookie receiver Efton Chism III has been one of the bigger surprise stories at OTAs. He has consistently stood out as a playmaker on offense for the Patriots in the practices open to the media. On Monday, he hauled in seven catches in total during the practice session.
It is evident through the route-running, separation skills and catching abilities that Chism belongs on the roster.
We'll see if Chism can continue to make plays when the pads finally come on and things get more competitive over the summer.
The former Eastern Washington standout has broken multiple records previously held by All-Pro wideout Cooper Kupp in college, including the single-season receptions record for the Eagles with 120 receptions.
Experimentation continues at left guard
Last week, the offense had an interesting winkle with Tyrese Robinson getting a healthy chunk of the reps at left guard. However, this week, it was Cole Strange and Wes Schweitzer getting the focus.
Strange has started at left guard for the Patriots when healthy. So the fact that he's getting work at that position isn't surprising at the least. Schweitzer working in at the position does add some intrigue considering he has typically taken snaps on the right side.
If anything, it continues to show how wide open things are for the Patriots at left guard right now. Layden Robinson, Sidy Sow and perhaps even rookie center Jared Wilson could be in the mix as well with the Patriots still searching for their best five-man combination along the offensive front.
Top receivers working with Maye
The Patriots currently have 12 receivers on their roster, which sets the stage for a fierce training camp competition at the position. On Monday, the top receivers working with Drake Maye were Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III.
Kendrick Bourne was absent at the practice, while both Stefon Diggs and Ja'Lynn Polk were limited. This could be an early indicator of the favorites ahead of training camp.
Granted, there are still many more practices for the team before a final decision is ultimately made.

Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter
Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rhamondre Stevenson has kept a stronghold on the New England Patriots' starting running back job over the past two seasons, appearing first on the depth chart in 26 of the team's 34 games. Advertisement But Stevenson showed some chinks in his armor during the previous campaign, as he fumbled the ball seven times, which led to his benching at one point in the . Ball security will almost certainly be one of Stevenson's priorities heading into 2025, and improvements in that area will boost his stock in a competitive Patriots running back room. Bleacher Report's Mitch Milani, however, predicts Stevenson will eventually lose his spot on the depth chart to an up-and-coming talent: rookie TreVeyon Henderson. In fact, Stevenson topped Milani's list of "NFL Stars Who'll Lose Jobs," which Milani discussed in an episode of Bleacher Report's NFL Daily Live Show on Monday. 'Rhamondre Stevenson has a little bit more competition than he's had in previous seasons. Not only does he have a new regime, a new head coach and a former – but also new – offensive coordinator, but he also has a new member in his backfield," Milani said in the video. "TreVeyon Henderson – out of Ohio State, [a] second-round pick – was one of, if not the, most explosive running back in the entire draft class. And now, he is fighting, pushing Rhamondre for his starting job.' Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson (32) holds the national championship trophy after his team's defeat of Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff title game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Jan. 21, Cairns / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Milani anticipates that Stevenson, should he lose the starting job, will continue to be relied upon and earn game reps in the backfield, but he believes Henderson has a higher ceiling in Josh McDaniel's offensive system, which has historically relied on pass-catching running backs. Advertisement "When we think of the Tom Brady era of Patriot football... We think of the Kevin Folk's, and the Shane Vereen's, and the James White's of the world," Milani said. "Henderson fits that role. But even more so, more expansively, he is a more explosive player, or [a more] highly-touted player, than any one of those running backs." Henderson, the No. 38 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is coming off a national championship season with Ohio State, which won the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff in January. In his final season with the Buckeyes, he served as a team captain on offense and rushed for 1,1016 yards on 144 carries, resulting in him earning a place on the All-Big Ten Conference Third Team. A fairy tale in Paris: French wild card Boisson stuns No. 6 Andreeva to reach French Open semis
The run continues for the 361st-ranked Loïs Boisson at Roland-Garros. After taking down third-seeded Jessica Pegula in the previous round, the French wild-card entry upset sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (6), 6-3 Wednesday in front of a boisterous and largely partisan crowd to reach the semifinals of the French Open. A year ago, Boisson tore the ACL in her left knee just a week before her home Grand Slam tournament started, preventing her from accepting an invitation to play. On Thursday, she will have the chance to advance to the final. 'It's incredible, no matter what, given what happened last year and all the difficult moments I went through,' Boisson said during her post-match interview. The 22-year-old Boisson was largely unknown outside tennis circles before capturing the spotlight in Paris. She is playing in her first Grand Slam main draw and became the first woman to reach the semifinals at her debut major tournament since 1989, when Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati both did it at the French Open. She is also the youngest French semifinalist at a Grand Slam event since Amelie Mauresmo at Wimbledon in 1999. The last Frenchwoman to win the title at Roland-Garros was Mary Pierce, 25 years ago. Under the closed roof of court Philippe-Chatrier, Andreeva repeatedly showed her frustration with the crowd, as excited fans chanted 'Loïs, Loïs' between points, waved Tricolor flags, shouted during play, and even applauded the Russian teenager's errors. The first set was marked by momentum swings and brilliant shot-making from both players. Boisson twice found herself down a break but fought back each time, using heavy spin and deep groundstrokes to trouble her Russian opponent. Andreeva grew visibly tense on key points, struggling to maintain her composure and wasting a chance to close out the set when up 5-3. Despite saving three set points and forcing a tiebreaker, she ultimately handed the set to Boisson with two consecutive backhand errors. Andreeva responded strongly at the start of the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. But Boisson broke back with a thunderous backhand winner down the line, drawing a roar of approval from the lively crowd. Andreeva received a warning after netting a routine forehand volley and angrily hitting a ball into the stands. She then argued with the umpire over a call that gave Boisson three break points. Andreeva saved the first one with a forehand winner then double-faulted, and never recovered. 'The first set was super intense, and I was really struggling at the start of the second, but I managed to regroup and finish like that,' said Boisson, who will make a big jump in the rankings. Having reached a career high of No. 152 last year before her knee injury, Boisson will climb at least to No. 68 on Monday. And that could be even higher if she manages to pull off a third straight shocker against the No. 2-seeded Coco Gauff in the semifinals. An unseeded player has reached the French Open final twice in the last four years: eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in 2021, and Karolina Muchova in 2023.

Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings
Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez was snubbed in another Pro Football Focus rankings list. This time, he was not listed in the top 10 of the top-32 cornerbacks rankings compiled on the site. Gonzalez did make the list, coming in at No. 13. However, one would think he should have cracked the top 10 after making the All-Pro Second-Team last season. He was also recently left off PFF's top 25 players under the age of 25 list. "Let the play talk," Gonzalez responded, when asked about being left off the previous PFF list. Gonzalez had a stellar season in 2024, recording 59 tackles, 11 past deflections, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Although he earned an All-Pro nod, he was snubbed in the Pro Bowl voting. So people overlooking Gonzalez isn't anything new. PFF's John Kosko wrote: "After missing most of his rookie season due to injury, Gonzalez started the 2024 campaign slowly before catching fire in Week 4 against the 49ers. He played man coverage at a 50.1% rate last season and earned a 78.2 PFF coverage grade, which ranked ninth among cornerbacks." Gonzalez will undoubtedly let his play do the talking. He could be even more dominant in Year 3 with an improved Patriots defense and veteran cornerback Carlton Davis III lining up on the other side. The duo could formulate one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
