Police seek people's support to eradicate ganja menace
In line with it, the police intend to include people's participation in tackling the major challenge faced in the erstwhile Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts.
Youngsters are going to play a proactive role not only in creating awareness among masses but also passing the information about peddlers to the police.
For the past one year, the Visakhapatnam Range police reached out to 3,000 educational institutions and carried out 11,000 awareness programmes on the implications of ganja menace. Nabbing the peddlers, seizing their properties and encouraging tribals to eradicate ganja cultivation were some of the extensive programmes carried out by the police.
However, despite several measures taken for curbing cannabis abuse and transportation, the police mentioned that they were not getting desired results. 'Ganja eradication should go beyond surveillance of the police which includes controlling its transportation, cultivation and consumption. For the past one year, the police booked 694 cases and arrested 1,945 accused persons. In all, 40,063 kg of ganja was seized. However, despite the efforts taken through awareness drives and strict surveillance, results are not that effective,' opined Gopinath Jatti, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Visakhapatnam Range.
But the DIG expressed confidence that the eradication of ganja would be more effective when people come forward to tip off and join hands with the police to offer support. This includes passing on information to the police on cultivation of ganja, transportation and consumption. 'The police will also admit drug addicts to deaddiction centres and help them overcome their addiction. But when people volunteer to offer support, the campaign will become even more impactful,' the DIG underlined.
Using technology like drones, identifying hotspots and increasing surveillance, the police also intend to seek the support of NGOs to derive desired outcomes in ganja eradication.
Reaching out to ganja cultivators, the police are extensively focusing on recommending alternative crops, creating livelihood opportunities to the youth involved in cannabis cultivation and transportation along with making people understand the implications of ganja menace through awareness drives. With people's participation, the DIG informed that the agenda is to eradicate ganja completely in the region.

BSF seizes 95kg ganja, 510 bottles of cough syrup in West Bengal border raid
Kolkata: In a major haul, BSF South Bengal Frontier seized 95 kilograms of Ganja and 510 bottles of Wincerex and foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics along the Indo–Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The troops of the 143 Battalion of BSF South Bengal Frontier's Tarali-1 Border Outpost on Wednesday laid an ambush near a papaya orchard and initiated stringent surveillance in the border areas. In the wee hours of Wednesday, at around 3.40 am, the troops spotted 5–6 'suspicious individuals carrying loads on their heads and moving toward the international border through paddy fields', BSF said in a statement. 'The troops immediately challenged them to stop and advanced quickly towards them. Fearing capture, the smugglers panicked and threw down their goods and fled toward Swaroopdah village taking cover of darkness and bushes.' 'The BSF conducted a thorough search operation in the area and recovered six plastic sacks. They recovered a total of 95 kilograms of Ganja, packed in 109 packets and 510 bottles of Wincerex on further examination of these sacks,' BSF said. The seized narcotics will be handed over to the concerned department after completing the necessary legal formalities, sources told ET. N K Pandey, Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier, stated that 'BSF personnel are performing their duties with full alertness and commitment to prevent smuggling along the India–Bangladesh border. As a result of their continuous and strategic actions, major smuggling attempts are being thwarted.'

Man held with cannabis in Panaji

The accused, identified as Ratan Kumar Pradhan, is originally from Odisha. He was held with cannabis after police raided a place near the cricket ground in Nagali area on Tuesday night, the official said. LSD, cocaine among drugs recovered from Thar that rammed 2 in Delhi
Delhi police recovered drugs, including Cocaine and LSD, from the Thar which hit two people near Delhi's 11 Murti Marg on Sunday. Both the people died in the accident. Ashish is a resident of Delhi's Shakarpur and was coming from Gurgaon when his Mahindra Thar rammed into two pedestrians near the Gyarah Murti Marg.(HT Photo) The accident came to light when a PCR call reported an accident near Gate No 3 of Talkatora Stadium, and a Mahindra Thar was discovered at the spot in an accidental condition. During inspection, the police found a bag with suspected drugs inside, PTI news agency reported. Commercial quantities of contrabands were found, including 0.30 gm of Cocaine, 2.6 gm of LSD, 23.47 gm of MD, and 21.26 gm of Ganja. Along with this, Tobacco and Charas were found along with ₹25,000 cash and a mobile phone, according to the report. Accused is a drug supplier driving under the influence Deputy commissioner of police Devesh Mahla said the PCR call was received at 6.30 am on Sunday by a passerby, after which police went to the spot and found two men lying unconscious and bleeding, while the SUV's bonnet was destroyed from the impact of the crash. The accused Ashish Bachchas, aged 26, was arrested on the spot. Police said Ashish is a drug addict and a supplier who was driving under the influence, which was confirmed by his medical examination. Ashish is a resident of Delhi's Shakarpur and was coming from Haryana's Gurugram when his car rammed into two pedestrians near the Gyarah Murti Marg. One of the victims has been identified as Sujesh Kshetri, hailing from Sikkim, while the other is yet to be identified. After the accident, both the victims were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where one was declared brought dead while the other was undergoing treatment, succumbed to injuries later in the day, a senior police said. Earlier, during the investigation, an empty liquor bottle was also recovered from inside the vehicle. Preliminary investigation suggested that Bachchas, who is unemployed, previously worked as a driver. Bachas was returning from Gurugram on Saturday night after celebrating Raksha Bandhan with his family in Shakarpur when the accident took place. "On August 1, the driver's vehicle was fined for over-speeding. Police found that there is an unpaid fine of ₹2,000 against the vehicle," PTI reported, citing police sources. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Chanakyapuri police station. The offending vehicle has been impounded, and police are further investigating to trace the source of the narcotics and establish the complete sequence of events.
