UK's victory day parade draws thousands to mark 80 years since WWII

Al Jazeera06-05-2025
The United Kingdom has marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, honouring the men and women who fought during World War II.
The events on Monday featured a procession by members of the British armed forces, accompanied by troops from Ukraine and the UK's NATO allies.
Alan Kennett, 100-year-old Royal Air Force veteran who landed in northern France on D-Day, accepted the salute from Garrison Sergeant Major Andrew Stokes in front of an audience that included King Charles III, signalling the parade to begin.
The parade followed a route from the Houses of Parliament, through Trafalgar Square and down the Mall to Buckingham Palace.

Qatar celebrates graduation of 156 students in UK, Ireland

QNA London The Cultural Attaché of the State of Qatar to the United Kingdom organised a graduation ceremony for 156 Qatari students studying in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland for the 2024/2025 academic year. The event, which was attended by a large number of outstanding students and their parents, was organised as part of the Cultural Attaché's commitment to supporting scholarship students and strengthening academic and cultural relations between the State of Qatar and leading higher education institutions in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The ceremony was attended by a number of representatives of the diplomatic corps at the Embassy of the State of Qatar in London, along with cultural attaches from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This reflects the importance of strengthening educational and cultural ties and consolidating academic cooperation between the State of Qatar and fraternal and friendly countries. The ceremony began with a speech delivered by Qatar's Cultural Attaché to the United Kingdom Fahad Al Kuwari, in which he expressed his pride in the outstanding academic achievements of the Qatari students and affirmed his commitment to providing them with continuous support throughout their academic journey. Director of the Scholarships Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Noora Mohammed Al Ansari delivered a speech congratulating the graduates and their families, appreciating their efforts and determination to excel and continue to give throughout their years of scholarship. The ceremony also honoured representatives of British and Irish universities in recognition of their pivotal role in supporting scholarship students and their fruitful cooperation with the Cultural Attaché during the current academic year. The ceremony also included a distinguished photography exhibition, during which graduating students presented their artistic and photographic works that embodied their educational and cultural experiences during their studies abroad. This honour reflects the depth of academic cooperation and strategic partnerships that contribute to enhancing scientific and cultural exchange between the State of Qatar and both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Fuel switches cut off before Air India crash: Probe

Fuel supplies to the engines of the Air India jet that crashed last month, killing 241 people on board, were cut off apparently without either pilot having switched them off, a preliminary report into the disaster said. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off on June 12 in what is one of the deadliest plane accidents in terms of the number of British nationals killed. The report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said the jet was carrying 54,200 kilograms of fuel, which was within the 'allowable limits.' The report said: 'The aircraft achieved the maximum recorded airspeed of 180 Knots IAS at about 08:08:42 UTC and immediately thereafter, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec.' Air India crash: Fuel was cut off to plane seconds after takeoff

dpa New Delhi Questions have swirled over what caused an Air India jet to crash into a residential neighbourhood shortly after take-off last month, killing 260 people. Preliminary findings by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) about the June 12 disaster suggests an answer, but also deepens the mystery: the fuel control switches for both engines on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner were nearly simultaneously flipped to the 'cut-off' position seconds after departure. The cockpit voice recorder captured the confusion as the London-bound plane experienced a sudden loss of thrust and began to descend over a residential area of Ahmedabad, in western India. The 15-page report released on Saturday notes that one pilot can be heard asking the other: 'Why did you cut-off?' The other responds: 'I didn't do it.' There were two pilots - the captain and the co-pilot - and investigators said they have yet to determine who was speaking. In the event of an engine failure, pilots can use these switches to manually restart or shut down an engine. The switches are spring-loaded to prevent them from being accidentally moved. Aviation expert Graham Braithwaite from Cranfield University told the BBC that if a pilot wanted to operate the switch, he would have to 'lift it and move very positively the position.' The switches were flipped from the 'cut-off' position back to the 'run' position seconds later, the report said - but it was too late to save the plane. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, crashed into a building less than minute after take-off and burst into flames. All but one of the passengers - a British national - were killed, along with 19 people on the ground. Emergency system deployed Investigators found no signs of a bird strike or external impact, noting that the aircraft had already begun losing altitude before it even cleared the airport perimeter wall. Airport surveillance footage showed the deployment of the jet's emergency Ram Air Turbine - a small propeller that generates hydraulic or electrical power - during the plane's brief climb. The system is typically activated in critical power-loss situations. No recommendations for Boeing At this stage of the investigation, the bureau issued no recommendations for Boeing or for the GE GEnx-1B engines used on the aircraft. Experts from Boeing, the US Federal Aviation Administration, and engine manufacturer General Electric are assisting with the probe. Air India confirmed it had received the preliminary findings but declined to comment further. 'Given the active nature of the investigation, we are unable to comment on specific details and refer all such enquiries to the AAIB,' the company posted on X.
